About UNICEF
UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights,
to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF is inspired
by the ideals enshrined in the UN Charter, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and
governments.
UNICEF in Kenya
UNICEF has worked in Kenya since 1971, helping the country work progressively towards the realization of
children’s rights.
The UNICEF programme of support to the Government of Kenya is co-ordinated in partnership with the Ministry
of Finance and the Ministry of Planning and National Development. The programme is aligned to the United
Nations Development Assistance Framework and Kenya’s Vision 2030. The programme is implemented under
a five-year Country Programme Action Plan co-signed by the Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Finance and
the UNICEF Representative to Kenya, and through Annual Work Plans.
The focus is on Child Survival and Development (including Health, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation & Hygiene); Child
Protection; Education, & Young People; Policy, Planning, Advocacy & Communication. Human Rights, including
Gender Equality, Participation and Capacity Development, Social Protection and Emergency Preparedness,
Response, Mitigation and Early Recovery cut across all programming areas. HIV and AIDS is a cross-cutting
issue addressed in all programme areas. Support to the Government and communities includes prevention
of mother-to-child transmission, treatment and care for children with HIV, improved nutrition for children and
mothers living with HIV and AIDS, promotion of male circumcision and door-to-door testing, prevention of
HIV among vulnerable groups, particularly girls, and care and support for children orphaned and living in
households affected by HIV and AIDS.
UNICEF programming aims to, among other objectives, contribute to the Millennium Development Goals and
the ideals of the Millennium Declaration by giving priority to the most vulnerable and hardest to reach women
and children. Special attention is paid to the vast arid and semi arid lands of Northern Kenya, the informal
settlements in Nairobi, as well as Nyanza and Western Provinces, whose indicators for children are very poor.

MESSAGE FROM OLIVIA YAMBI,
UNICEF REPRESENTATIVE KENYA
Greetings from all of us at UNICEF Kenya.
As we prepare for the end-of-year festive season, I am happy to present to you the 2010 UNICEF Cards and
Gifts Catalogue which offers you an exceptional opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in Kenya.
Through the purchase of our quality cards or gifts for your staff, clients and families, you enable children and
women to benefit from such life-saving interventions as immunization, nutrition, life skills and HIV and AIDS
awareness.
The sale of cards and gifts is one of the ways in which UNICEF engages with partners from the corporate sector,
civil society and members of the public to raise funds to support programmes aimed at realizing the rights of
children to survival, education, protection and participation.
I am happy to inform you that, thanks to our partnership with the Government of Kenya, and the support we
continue to receive from our corporate partners, the civil society and people in Kenya overall, things are beginning
to look up for children in Kenya. The results of the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey for 2008-2009, which
were released in June 2010, show a marked improvement in child survival. The death rate for children under
five years reduced from 115 per 1,000 live births in 2003 to 74 in 2008-2009. This death rate is still high and we
must sustain our efforts if children’s right to survival and development is to be realized and Kenya is to achieve
the health-related Millennium Development Goals.
The maternal and new born death rates remain very high in Kenya. This is a crucial area for focus given its
inter-linkage with child survival. Each year, about 6,150 women lose their lives in Kenya due to causes related to
pregnancy and childbirth. Children of mothers who die during the first six weeks of their babies’ lives are up to
10 times more likely to die within two years than children with two living parents. Most of these maternal deaths
can be prevented, especially if women are enabled to deliver with the assistance of a skilled health worker. This
year, our local fundraising initiatives have focused on supporting maternal and child health programmes. The
funds will be channelled directly to health centres through the recently initiated Government of Kenya Health
Services Support Fund (HSSF).
I take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported us this year and urge you to help us give children
and their mothers in Kenya a bright future by purchasing these wonderful UNICEF cards and gifts.
Happy holidays.

FUNDING ALLOCATION FOR UNICEF - SUPPORTED PROGRAMMES
IN KENYA
When you buy a UNICEF card or gift we
make sure your money is used to make a
significant difference in the lives of children
all over Kenya. We support the government
to provide children with life-saving
interventions, including immunization,
nutrition, and water and sanitation: To
protect them from exploitation and abuse,
and give them an education, a chance to
grow and to reach their full potential.
Our work with the government and partners
in Kenya gives millions of children the
chance of a brighter, safer future.

Vitamin A for Protection
Francois d’Elbée/UNICEF Kenya
By Juliett Otieno
Susan carefully holds her two
year old daughter Mariamu
Kiserian as she receives
vitamin A droplets at a medical
outreach held at Orkungu
Village in Taita Taveta, on
the Kenya-Tanzania border.
The outreach is held once
a month by the Taveta SubDistrict Hospital. The services
are always comprehensive as
many of the villagers cannot get
to the hospital due to the risk
of getting stuck or meeting wild
animals on the way. Orkungu’s
women often give birth in their
homes and sometimes their
first encounter with a medical
officer is after delivery, maybe
weeks later. Vitamin A was
provided through UNICEF
support to the Ministry of Public
Health and Sanitation.

Maternal Shelter gives hope
to Mothers
By Juliett Otieno
In Kenya, about 60 per cent of deliveries nationally take place at
home, but in the Northern parts of Kenya, that number is at more
than 90 per cent.
Sadly, statistics indicate that Northern Kenya could have a Maternal
Mortality (where mothers die during childbirth) rate of over 1,000
per 100,000 live births. A Safe Motherhood (Maternal) Shelter was
opened at Garissa Provincial General Hospital, in partnership with
UNICEF Kenya. Specifically it caters for women whose pregnancies
are problematic, live very far from the main hospital and will need
professional help at delivery.

Habiba had lost five previous babies, either through miscarriages
or mishaps during delivery. She was brought into the facility when
she was six months pregnant and delivered a baby boy Bisharo
(meaning good tidings/news). Though born prematurely at seven
and a half months and weighing 1.5 kilos, Bisharo has made
remarkable progress since his birth. Habiba (pictured) and her
husband Hussein were overjoyed at the birth of their baby. “We are
so grateful to Allah for this good fortune,” said Hussein.

2010 Mama’s Million Shilling Chain
By Pamella Sittoni
About 6,150 women die in Kenya every year
from pregnancy-related complications. In May
this year the public in Kenya was invited to be a
part of the solution by participating in the Mama’s
Million Shillings Chain Campaign to raise funds
to enable women to get access to maternal
health services. The campaign was organized by
UNICEF Kenya and corporate partners Imperial
Bank and Village Market, to put the spotlight on
maternal and newborn health, and called on the
public, corporate partners and leaders to take
action to stem the high tide of deaths.
The highlight of the event was the building of
a million-shilling chain using tokens bought at
Kshs. 200 (US$2.6) each. As shoppers and their
families bought tokens, the chain grew longer and
longer to raise about US$10,000 in just a day. All
the funds raised will be contributed to the newly
established Health Services Support Fund to
provide maternal health services for women.
The event was presided over by the Minister for
Public Health and Sanitation, Hon. Beth Mugo.
Private sector partners presented cheques
of their contributions to the cause; they
included Chandaria Foundation, Premchandbhai
Foundation, Kenindia Assurance, APA Insurance,
DHL, Mumias Sugar Company and the Nairobi
Hospital.

Malezi Bora
By Jayne Kariuki
In 2007 Malezi Bora (Swahili for Good Nurturing) was adopted
by Kenya’s Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation in partnership
with UNICEF and the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya, to address
the declining child survival indicators in Kenya. According to the
2008-2009 Kenya Health Demographic Survey, Kenya’s under-five
mortality has declined from 115 per 1,000 live births in 2003 to 74
per 1,000 live births. This year’s theme was “Improving the health
of mothers and the newborn” and was appropriate since in Kenya,
only 43 per cent of women deliver in a health facility, thus increasing
the number of babies who die within their first month of life.
“I’m expecting my third baby in July”, said Hannah Muthoni, a young
lady who had travelled eight kilometres to reach the health facility.
“Although I’m really tired, I had to come because on Sunday, our
church pastor advised expectant mothers to visit the clinic for free
Malezi Bora services” she added. Hannah received iron and folic
acid supplements, along with a Mother Child card to keep track of
her and her unborn baby’s developmental progress.
The launch kicked off two weeks of integrated maternal and
child health services in all health facilities in Kenya. Parents are
encouraged to take their children who are under five years old to
health centres and hospitals for immunization, growth monitoring,
ORS, Vitamin A, deworming and receive insecticide-treated
mosquito nets to protect them from malaria, a major child killer
in Kenya. Mothers are given advice on feeding their children and
pregnant women are also attended to and immunized against
tetanus. All these services are provided free.
Voucher system for safe delivery
By Juliett Otieno
Fardosa Mohamed, a 17 year old Clinic attendant at Mwembe
Tayari Municipal Clinic in Mombasa went into the hospital to deliver
her baby. It became apparent that her pregnancy had complications
when she complained of repeated convulsions for almost 6 hours,
and was therefore admitted to the Maternity Ward. Doctors attempted
normal delivery but her condition deteriorated so doctors opted for a
caesarean section. The baby boy weighed 2.9 kg. Both mother and
26
baby did well and were eventually discharged from the hospital.
Thanks to UNICEF support in the form of delivery vouchers
provided to mothers with complicated pregnancies, Fardosa did
not have to worry about the cost of the procedure. She and her
baby’s lives were saved due to the presence of skilled medical staff
at the hospital.

over the future is through our children. At Pan Africa Life
we recognise this and are very happy to partner with
UNICEF in this worthwhile investment”.
Imperial Bank has always had a well-articulated and

Children are our future and by supporting UNICEF we are
supporting the future of our nation. We are proud to
partner with UNICEF in making a difference in the lives of
children – our future.
The bank’s CSR policy is in line with the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) and Kenya’s development
plans. Two of the MDGs include reducing maternal and
child mortality. Kenya needs to improve maternal health
and reduce the number of children who die before they
reach five years of age. 500,000 women die each year
due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth
while about 4 million newborns die within the first 28
days of life.
Legend Valuers Limited is humbled to be recognized as
one of the supporters to UNICEF-supported programmes.
As part of the society, Legend associates with the less
fortunate especially children to secure their future.
This is a worthwhile cause and thank you for the idea.

The goal is to reduce maternal and child mortality rates
by approximately one third through the ‘Child Alive’

fundraising.

At British-American, we recognize that to safeguard the
future of our nation we need to improve the quality of
life for our children and ensure their well-being not only
by providing basic necessities such as food, water and
shelter but also by upholding their due rights as vital
members of our society.
“He (Jesus) took a little child and had him stand among
them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever
welcomes one of these little children in my name
welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not
welcome me but the one who sent me.” Mark 9:36-37
We take this opportunity to congratulate UNICEF for the
numerous years the organization has carried this mantle
in our nation and around the world. We are humbled
to be part of this noble cause and are indeed proud
partners.
Linksoft Group is a company proudly founded on Biblical
Principles. In keeping with the words of Jesus, we believe
strongly in the value of taking care of our children and
are proud to be associated with all UNICEF-supported
initiatives as they impact the lives of many children the
world over.

The A P A association with UNICEF contributes to the
betterment of the lives of our children. It is our belief
that we are making it possible for the children to be selfsufficient. However small the gift, purchasing the UNICEF
cards contributes to uplifting their standards of living.
Through mentorship, it’s the younger workforce in A P A
that lead our CSR projects so that we can ensure active
participation and continuity of this tradition.
We, at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts recognize the fact that
children are the future generation of this world and in
line with this, we purchase UNICEF cards as a way of
supporting the noble initiative of advancing the cause of
humanity. We are proud to be associated and recognized
by UNICEF as the top ten companies that supported them
last year.
