Whether we like it or not, the legal marketplace is changing. Once known as a
professional calling, lawyers in firms of all sizes are now being faced with the
application of business principles in order to just maintain pace. Clients are demanding
better, faster and cheaper legal services, and they have begun to look to non-traditional
legal service providers to meet their needs. To know how to respond to these
challenges, lawyers should be aware of what led to them and how structural changes in
the practice of law can alter—for good or ill—the future of the practice.
• Hear from a distinguished panel of law school deans and educators about how
they see law school curricula and the training of lawyers changing in response to
globalization, the flattening technological universe and the entry of non-traditional
legal service providers into the legal marketplace.
• Discover what our clients really want—what drives them and how to be the
lawyers they hire and keep.

†Dark Side of the Law • Clarke
Recognizing and addressing depression has taken
on new importance in recent years in the practice
of law. Lawyer suicides, substance abuse and
related issues have highlighted the need for honest
assessment and proactive steps to treat those who
suffer from depression. Professor Brian Clarke shares
his experience as an attorney, husband and father who
has battled depression. Diagnosed with severe clinical
depression in 2005, Brian discusses his symptoms
and struggle prior to diagnosis, taking leave to
obtain treatment, the value of peer support through
the North Carolina State Bar’s Lawyer Assistance
Program, managing his illness through a combination
of medication and therapy and the hope that he feels
today. Brian also addresses reasons for the mental
health crisis among lawyers and offers practical
solutions to lawyers for improving their mental health
– to the benefit of themselves, their families, their
firms and their clients.

10:15-11:15 What Do Our Clients Want? • Moderator: Heyl
• Panelists: Bostian, Morey and Turner-Edwards
The legal marketplace is rapidly changing. This
has an impact on clients of all varieties. Clients
are looking for their lawyers to be their partners,
to understand their businesses and to understand
those things that are important to them. Listen to
a panel of in-house counsel and non-lawyer client
representatives discuss their view of the “New
Normal” and what they expect of their lawyers as
technology, globalization and other factors push the
practice of law in new directions.
11:15-12:30p What Happened to My Big Beautiful Tomorrow?
Where the New Normal Came From, Who’s Being
Affected Most and How You Can Learn to Live
with It • Burk
Ten short years ago, much of the legal profession
was enjoying a long period of consistent growth and
prosperity. A lot has changed: The entry-level job
market has contracted by one-third, demand for legal
services has contracted as well and many practitioners
find their markets and margins under competitive
attack. This session explores how much of these
unwelcome developments can be attributed to the
recent economic crisis and how those in different
sectors of practice can recognize and respond to the
challenges they face.

*Adapting to a World that Wants Better, Faster, Cheaper Legal Solutions: A Few
Simple Models that Work • Video Re-broadcast from Toward a Leaner & Cleaner Practice:
A Professional Responsibility to Innovate? (December 5, 2014)
• Professor William Henderson, Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Bloomington, IN
The legal sector is in a period of high anxiety not because legal problems are going away, but
because clients are struggling to pay for lawyers. Flagging incomes of ordinary citizens and
a relentless increase in legal and business complexity are forcing lawyers to rethink how we
provide legal services. We must adopt tools and methodologies that are capable of delivering
quantum leaps in legal productivity. Professor Henderson outlines the key elements required
for change and, in turn, provides participants with a few simple models to help them
persuasively communicate the need for action to their partners and colleagues. These models
also reveal some practical avenues for better serving clients, all of which are consistent with
our professional and ethical obligations as lawyers

The “New Normal” not only affects law firms and lawyers in practice, it also affects how law
