X73 Shipbuilders Focus on
Safety By Staying Healthy
Production Refueling and Nuclear Support shipbuilders in Department X73 have
been focusing on safety for the past four months by competing in a “Biggest
Loser Contest.” The goal of the contest was to become healthier not only by
losing weight, but by paying closer attention to nutrition and increasing afterwork exercise routines. Throughout the contest, weigh-ins were held every two
weeks to track progress.
“Going home the same way you arrived is very important,” said Arthur
Fladger, X73 general foreman. “Statistics show that weight gain is a
contributing factor to injuries in the shipyard. I think the challenge was good
for us and it was the perfect example of engagement. Our Superintendent David
Horne even participated. What a better way to lead, than by example?”
At the final weigh-in, shipbuilder Darrell Davis was declared the contest
winner. “Combined, our department lost a total of 65 pounds,” said Fladger. “We
hope to continue to focus our attention on our health and safety throughout the
new year.”

In-Service Aircraft Carrier
Division Supports USO
The In-Service Aircraft Carrier
Division hosted the Ninth Annual
Aircraft Carrier Invitational Golf
Tournament at Ford’s Colony
Country Club in October. Proceeds
from the tournament totaled $5,000
and were given to the USO on
Dec. 5 during a check presentation
in the lobby of Building 86.

Career Pathways Takes Part in First Bridge Building
Competition
On Dec. 10, Career Pathways took part in Booker T. Washington Middle
School’s first Bridge Building Competition. During the contest, students were
given a small kit consisting of 25 thin pieces of balsa wood and glue, and were
tasked to construct a bridge from the material. Once the bridges were complete,
they were laid onto the ends of two tables and a bucket was tied to the middle.
Judges then poured sand into each bucket until the bridge snapped.
“The students enjoyed the challenge of building their bridges, and watching
them being broken, said Mark Deese (E62), competition judge. “Several of
the bridges designs were very creative in nature. Since the design was based on
efficiency of materials, the bridge that held the most weight, wasn’t the bridge
that actually won the competition. That showed them a real world example of
design challenges faced every day.”
Pictured: Competition judges Mark Deese (E62) (left) and Jason Hartmann (AMSEC) slowly pour sand into a
bucket held up by one of the student’s bridges.
NNS’ Learning and Development Team Facilitates City Council Retreat
In December, several members of Newport News
Shipbuilding’s Learning and Development team
facilitated the 2012 Newport News City Council Retreat
at the Mariners’ Museum. The day was divided into two
segments. The first segment involved discussing how the
council and the city’s senior leadership work together as
a team. This segment included teambuilding exercises
relating to emotional intelligence and referencing the
Mariners’ Museum’s “The Nelson Touch” exhibit. The
second half of the day was focused on facilitating a
discussion on refining the City of Newport News’ strategic
priorities in the context of the current internal and external
environments that are impacting the city.
“The Learning and Development team has really enjoyed
the opportunity to work so closely with the city’s
senior leadership team,” said Bill Flowers, Leadership
Development manager. “We’re proud to be a continuing
part of their work to make progress on our city’s important
issues.”
