The Mushroom Farm
by Robert Feuer
Life hasn’t been
easy for Dr. Robb, whose
show “The Mushroom
Farm,” a progressive
collection of psychedelic
and 1960s rock music, airs
second Sundays, 11 a.m. to
2 p.m.
He’s had a genetic problem since birth, he says
during a recent interview in his Sebastopol apartment, but
was “getting around fine,” with a wife, a child, and a job,
when calcification set in during his mid-to-late 20s. He
couldn’t move his neck much and began walking hunched
over. “I can’t see where I’m going,” he says. “I see the
ground.”
Doctors tried to straighten his neck by breaking
and reforming it. This didn’t work. The doctor told him
“everything that could have gone wrong with your
surgery went wrong,” leaving him paralyzed in his left
leg and hand. “But, I let it go as one of those things in my
life,” Robb says.

KOWS Studios Now
In Sebastopol!
The Herd made a fairly smooth amble
from Occidental to our new broadcast studios
located at 500 N. Main Street, Room 1, in
downtown Sebastopol, on Hwy.116 opposite
Safeway. We would like to thank the Sebastopol
United Methodist Church for leasing us the
space.
To celebrate, we would like our new
community to come visit our new quarters and
meet the people who make KOWS your
community connection.

…The Studio Has Moved...But Not The Antenna!
We are now halfway to our goal of being the true “Voice of West County.” The final piece is to relocate
our antenna for a greatly improved broadcast signal. We have been awarded a $5,000 matching grant by the
Fessenden Group, so your tax-deductible donation for the antenna relocation project is now worth double! Learn

Antenna
Relocation fr p.1
Now that our studio move is
completed, the herd must turn its
collective head to raise enough
funds to relocate our three watt
antenna from atop a Douglas fir tree
at the Occidental Arts & Ecology
Center to a carefully engineered
fifteen watt location on City of
Sebastopol property.
KOWS needs to move our
antenna because of its current poor
location, and the hilly topography of
the West County that causes many
not to receive KOWS clearly on
their radios.
The relocation will send our
stronger signal to all the main cities
and towns of West County and its
surrounding rural areas.
Our FCC-approved engineer
estimates KOWS would be covering
a broadcast population of 200,000,
rather than the 25,000 at present.
KOWS is also the official
FCC West County Emergency Alert
System (EAS) for information in
times of emergency, so the

KOWS State of the Station Report 1-1-16
2015 was quite a year for KOWS.
From simply scrambling to pay the bills and
wondering what was next, to making an
evolutionary move to Sebastopol, our radio
station truly blossomed this past year and by
luck and the hard work of many, has
prospered and is poised to meet exciting
challenges in the coming year.
Once again I would like to thank everyone at KOWS and all of
you supporters for making this station and our recent move possible.
I feel like we have turned a big corner and that the future has never
been brighter.
Now that we are firmly entrenched in our new home we need
to meet and act on the many possibilities that come from being in a
larger, more diverse community.
We have some exciting plans for our programming, to extend
our signal with a new antenna location, and to actively outreach the
people in our area to truly make KOWS The Voice Of West Sonoma
County.
Some of our plans involve getting our local high schools on
the air with news and informational programs, having a greater
Latino community presence with bilingual and local news shows, and
empowering the LGBT+ community by giving them a greater voice.
These are just some examples of how we will more fully involve our
local residents. The intellectual and experiential wealth of our area is
incredible, as you know, and we plan to tap into it in a big way.
We are not forgetting our amazing variety of music shows by
any means. Our time slots are filling up fast and we are presenting a
unique mix of sounds that are comparable in scope to stations that
are much larger and better funded.
In addition, we have plans to begin using The Epworthian
Hall, which is a full- sized performance and events hall in our own
parking
lot. We are now residents at the property owned by The

United Methodist Church (UMC) and we thank them in advance for
the events we intend to produce, some of them with the Church itself.
We are serving the same community as The UMC and this
relationship has every indication of being rewarding and fruitful.
So, a lot to look forward to in 2016. It’s time to roll up our
sleeves and have at it.
Happy New Year!

Social Media Report : Researched by Dave Stroud as of 12-20-15
We love our fans! Check out the ‘Likes’ table below. Turns out that KOWS radio has been
garnering quite a following on Facebook. But heaven forbid we should rest on our laurels…why not shoot
for the 2,000 mark by the end of the year? How do we do it? Sign up for Facebook and share the love!
While a Facebook ‘Like’ is not an empirical measure of our ratings and followers, it is nonetheless a great
feeling to be sharing the top of the community radio heap with some other great stations. Our Herd
members rock! Donate today!
Thanks to Don Campau and the Programming Committee for training new hosts and filling our

Who Is KOWS & How Does it Operate?
KOWS Community Radio has been on the air for over eight years and streaming on the internet for seven years. KOWS is
collectively run by its 80 volunteers, who hail from all over our beautiful West County. The station is managed by an eight-member
Steering Committee that meets monthly. Each member represents one of eight sub-committees that keep the radio station operating.
Each sub-committee reports to the Steering Committee monthly. There are general meetings called as needed for reports, updates,
and to vote on significant issues. KOWS costs about $20,000 a year to operate. As a volunteer-led organization, every dollar we
receive goes to our operations: rent, phone, internet, music royalties, insurance, and studio equipment and supplies. Our income is
sourced from business underwriters, show host dues, individual donations, small grants, and our many community benefit events.
KOWS does not receive funds from the Public Broadcast System. 4
Station News and Old
We reaped an incredible autumn bounty of high-quality new show hosts with our thenanticipated move to Sebastopol. The new show hosts listed below reflect the incredible talents
and interests of those who reside in West County.
There are not many open slots left in the key 9 a.m.-Midnight hours on every day of the
week. Are you a morning person? We are still looking to fill most of the crucial morning 6-9 a.m.
“drive-time” slots.
Our new show hosts are now limited to hosting a show every two weeks, instead of weekly,
to enable us to squeeze everyone from the community we can into the 9 a.m.- Midnight prime time.
The Programming Committee tries its best to accommodate your show to your lifestyle. After three
months of hosting a new show, show hosts can request to move their time slot, or show length
change.

The Mushroom Farm – Dr Robb
fr. p.1
by Robert Feuer
Though 85-90% of his feeling returned after six months,
he remained unable to straighten up, with inflexibility in his legs,
and a lack of balance. He had to teach himself to walk again.
According to Robb, “It could be worse.”
Born in Pasadena in 1963, he spent his first two decades
in Southern California, before moving to “the not-so-good parts
of East Oakland and Berkeley. I was a ghetto rat for 20 years.”
He achieved degrees in electronics and science, and studied for a
year at UC Berkeley. Robb worked at a genetic engineering lab
for five years, where he kept the equipment running and
maintained the building. From this period, while married for
seven years, he has a daughter, Alchemy, who, at age three, went
to North Carolina with her mother. As a teen, she returned, and
lived with him for four years, before returning east.
Robb was laid off in 2002. Shortly after, he lost his
apartment to a fire set by his roommate’s three-year-old who
tried to cook a can of peas in the microwave. Robb moved to
Ukiah, then Cazadero, before settling in Sebastopol. But, no one
will hire him when they see him, he says. “I desperately miss
being able to work. I’m so bored.”
Robb had advanced to the point where he could walk five
or six miles a day, when his car went off the road while returning
home from doing his radio show. “My spine was snapped,” he
says. He expected to be permanently paralyzed from his waist
down, but, through determination and continued exercise in bed,
one day, after six to 12 months, he noticed he could move a little.
“That was the most amazing thing in the world.”
Now, he’s able to get around using his wheelchair and has
taught himself to walk again, albeit still hunched over. He
returned to his show, thanks to a friend since the fifth grade,
Chris, who drives from Richmond monthly to take him to the
studio, and has become his co-host.
Robb has been doing his show, originally called “Orange
Sunshine,” for seven years. His early interest in musicians like
Ray Coniff and Perry Como changed to the Beatles, Doors, and
Grateful Dead, under the influence of friends. From there, he
turned to “weirder, psychedelic stuff,” by groups such as Spooky
Tooth, the Strawberry Alarm Clock, and the Electric Prunes. “I
get to play music people either haven’t heard or haven’t heard in
years.”

The Art & Science of Being a Manly Man
Plugging your Leaks
A hearty and healthy Irish hello to all you Manly Men out there. The Celtic Coach here with some
more Tips and Tools to help set you up for success in 2016.
Here is something you might already know. At the end of each year there are things left undone,
projects begun but not finished, tasks open. Everyday you think about them in some form or another, but you
say, “ ahh, I’ll get to it later” but you never do. You spend more time thinking about NOT doing the the
task then is required to actually DO It. Set yourself up for success in 2016, take an inventory of what thing’s
need completing.
Personal Life:
Decide on a day and time, at least 1 hour (this is your life after
all) undisturbed and ask yourself: In my personal life, what are all
the things that have been left undone? Projects around the house,
phone calls, emails, and commitments to myself and others?
Discard stuff that is no longer in use.
Professionally:
1. Think about your business, job, or career. What are the
projects started not completed, projects to start, emails, phone
calls, things you have been putting off, write them all down, get
them out of your head and onto paper.
2. Calendar all your actions steps over the coming weeks and
make a realistic completion time and stick to it. Tell a friend you are doing this and ask for support. Ask
yourself: What are the best days and times for me to complete these tasks? Why is this of value, what is the
payoff in completing these tasks?
Do this process and it will greatly support you in relieving any stress or anxiety. Plug all your leaks
of 2015, so you can move into 2016 strongly.
If you need help with this process please email me at [email protected] and I will send you
a trigger list that will help you to do that big Brain-Dump
May the luck of the Irish be with you always ☺

Steady Eddie: Ed's Retro Music Archives - First Sunday 5-7 PM
I'm a lifelong Sonoma County resident, born at Palm Drive Hospital in
1957, currently make my home in Santa Rosa with wife, Sonia, and one cat.
I first got interested in music at the age of ten, listening to AM
radio and buying whatever records I could on my allowance. In 1972, I
got
turned on to FM, and became a dedicated listener of KSAN through the
70's.
In the 80's, I listened to a lot of KPFA and KVRE-FM. I also went to hear a
lot of live
music in the area, and still do. I've been exposed to a very eclectic mix of
music over
the years, and have accumulated a large collection over a lifetime of music collecting.
I got my first experience in radio broadcasting by being asked
to guest on my friend R.L. Newt's show, Newtopian Dream, on
KOWS about 2011 or 2012. I would share some of my collection and
give some history on the songs and artists. My collection is
especially deep in rock & roll and R&B from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
Through my interest in the influences of the music I grew up with, I
started to dig a little deeper into the recordings of an earlier era, and
as my interest in the songs and artists of the 20's, 30's and 40's
increased, and the collection kept growing, I got the inspiration for

This New Year finds us KOWS grazing in the
new pasture of Sebastopol. ‘Tis the season for
reflection. I am very
grateful for my three
years at KOWS. The
privilege of being a DJ at
KOWS is beyond
rewarding. My show,
Minkoff Chatoy “A Fool in
the Forest,” still holds
true. I am that idealistic frolicking fool about town
cavorting with other creative comrades. Bringing
the community to the microphone. I am excited to
share the air, celebrating one's passion with others,
knowing this perpetuates vision and connections. I
feel this is the essence of KOWS Community
Radio. WE are YOUR radio station. I encourage
everyone to go to our new website and click on
“Shows”, read about our DJ's, their shows, and
contact them if you have questions or thoughts. I
give many accolades to all the volunteer DJ's who
gave freely their time and talents to keep this fine
8station running and in existence. cont’d. p.11
El Nino - by Seahorse D. Gross (sung to the tune of “Manana” by Peggy Lee)
The heavens she is open and the rain is falling down
I haven't seen it wet like this since Johnny D. left town
There's herring shoals on Mill Street and there's trawlers everywhere
The sea horses and the octopus, I wear them in my hair
El Nino, El Nino
El Nino is wet enough for me
The Russian River's moving east it's six feet deep on Main
The porpoises are dancing and they're laughing once again
the sea lions and steelhead swim among the redwood trunks
and beneath the Guerneville bridge there's no dry land for drunks
El Nino, El Nino
El Nino is damp enough for me
WestAmerica's 'neath the surf, the money's floating 'round
The teachers down at Guerneville school they make a gurgling sound
The vineyards are all flooded - although it looks quite nice
They're tearing up the rootstock and planting long grain rice
El Nino El Nino
El Nino is moist enough for me
The undertow at Guerneville vet knocks Eddie off his feet
With all that abalone he's got enough to eat
He's got his Mustang floating now and has a place to park
But says it's hard to snorkel while neutering a shark
El Nino, El Nino
El Nino is wet enough for me
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence think it's weird
That out-of-towners stare at nuns with lipstick and a beard
Their Bingo games are legendary - do a lot of good
and no one's had such fun since "B4!" in the Hood

I heard Somalian pirate ships have targeted the Pink
They like brisket of Elephant with Merlot which they drink
The women there are beautiful the Pirates need their hugs
but they're afraid to show their face - they've heard about The THUGZ
El Nino, El Nino
El Nino is wet enough for me
Down at Armstrong Woods they're Hangin' Ten between the trees
The surfs up and the waves are big as in Hawaii's seas
The barrel waves are epic and the foamies bubble white
They're stringing lights up in the trees
so they can surf at night
El Nino, El Nino
El Nino has saturated me
KGGV's underwater, nowhere to be seen
We moved the studio into a Yellow Submarine
The ventilation's not the best
in fact it's getting rank
and now there's Sockeye spawning
inside our septic tank
El Nino, El Nino
El Nino it makes me wanna pee
The waterfalls make Rio Nido look like Bali Ha'i
The humpback whales and giant squid, we've seen them swimming by
The jellyfish and walruses are learning to climb trees
I hope the subaquatic swine don't spread any disease
El Nino El Nino
El Nino, is what I like to see
I won't complain it's been too dry, and I love the rain
The stormy green Pacific wears an endless daisy chain
It doesn't scare we District Fivers, we don't need no pills
Because Efren Carillo. just grew a set of gills
El Nino El Nino
El Nino's about to set us free

KOWS Literary Events
Suzanne Lang speaks with Kermit Roosevelt
In 1942, tens of thousands of innocent U.S. citizens were put on trains and forced into
internment camps in the name of national security. In our post 9/11 America, and certainly in
the wake of carnage in Paris and San Bernardino, we are again
facing demonization of innocent people based on ethnicity and a
national security apparatus that conflicts with the American ideal
of individual freedom.
“Allegiance” is Kermit Roosevelt’s
latest novel and he recently spoke about it
and about the lessons of history that we tend
to repeat with Suzanne Lang, host of Lit
Radio. Kermit is the great great grandson of
Teddy Roosevelt, a constitutional lawyer
with first-hand accounts of the injustices in
Guantanamo; he has clerked for Supreme
Court Justice David Souter and is a professor of law at the University of
Pennsylvania Law School. “Allegiance” is a legal thriller steeped in the
reality of the constitutional debate over the Japanese-American
internment camps and draws upon actual events from World War II,
including the Supreme Court cases Hirabayashi vs. United States and Korematsu vs. United
States.
“Good people can do bad things” is how he characterizes Franklin Roosevelt’s signing
of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the internment of Japanese-Americans. The
author chose to write about the WW II era because of its parallels to the post 9/11 world of
today: a President accused of socialism and distrusted for his expansion of government
power, a shocking attack on American soil, suspicion of outsiders, and the need to decide
who is a friend and who an enemy. The book is extensively researched and draws real
historical figures (Supreme Court Justices Felix Frankfurter and Hugo Black, and FBI
Director J. Edgar Hoover) as key characters into his fictional plot.
Listen for Kermit Roosevelt in conversation with Suzanne Lang. Lit Radio airs the
second and fourth Sundays at 7 p.m.

Ed's Retro Music Archives
First Sunday 5-7 PM
I wanted to focus on the music that
preceded the rock & roll era, which is
almost completely unrepresented on radio
today. (Dave's outstanding Deeper Roots
on KOWS is an exception). I love to share
some of the earliest recorded versions of
songs that have become often-recorded
standards and classics over the years.
I focus on Jazz, Swing, and popular
music, but also feature influential artists and
songs from blues, country, gospel, and
foreign countries, even featuring some of
the recordings from the early 20th century
and the 1890's when some of the first
recorded music came out!
I consider my show a tribute to my
grandparents who had a great influence on
my interest in music. They met while both
were members of a band in the 1930's.
Many of the records that I play on my show,
were passed on to me by my grandma, and
I realize now that grandma had pretty good
taste! A lifetime of collecting has led me to
what I hope will be a lifetime of sharing this
wonderful and influential music with all the
listeners of KOWS that check out and stick
with my show.
From Tonga to Sebastopol
The Rev. Iunisi Tovo
Hello everyone !!!!
My name is Iunisi Tovo. I am beyond excited
to serve in this community as the new Pastor of
Sebastopol United Methodist. I am so delighted to
have met the beautiful people of KOW Radio Station. I
love music and always enjoy listening to radio
characters on different stations.
I was born and raised on the island of Tonga to
a Christian family. I moved to this beautiful United
States of America in search of a better life and better
education for my children. I believe in Jesus Christ my
Savior and my Redeemer. This is my first appointment
and I’m so profoundly glad to serve alongside the
wonderful parishioners of this community. I believe in
Team Leadership in partnership with laities. I love the
Methodist structure and our Conference Mission in
making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation
of the world as well as engaging faith in public
squares.
My personal perspective is that each one has a

understanding in Faith, Hope and Love in Christ. This
will create a great hospitable church serving
as inspiring spiritual growth in others in due process.
I strongly believe in the power of prayers. We
will begin our weekly Covenant prayer on Fridays
from 12p.m.-1p.m. and it is an informal, open prayer
group. Anyone is welcome.
So far I love the neighborhood and am looking
forward to volunteering in the community as well.

Antenna Relocation
fr p.3
The ARC reports its progress to the Steering Committee on a monthly basis.
Community radio stations are small fry in the FCC world, and the local commercial and public FM
spectrum boundaries are always changing, causing us to have to adapt our Low Power broadcast area to
suit those giants.
Our cause was helped three years ago because of some minor FCC rule changes that allowed us to
move our antenna from its poor location to a better home. After a test broadcast, and many studies and
much research by our FCC approved engineers, we concluded that to the south and east of Sebastopol gave
us the best line-of-site view needed by our FM broadcast antenna to beam into the greater Sebastopol area.
Our research led us to a small piece of property that is part of the City of Sebastopol, but an island
surrounded by county lines on Pleasant Hill Road, near Blackney. It is used as the city’s main water
storage facility.
The ARC approached the City for permission to install our antenna on their property. At the city
council meeting on November 3rd 2015, a unanimous vote allowed KOWS to pursue a lease for our
antenna with the city manager and planners. At the next council meeting on December 1st the council voted
4-1 to waive the nearly $3,000 in fees associated with the use permit because of the numerous public
benefits that come with a community radio station.
As we go to press, the ARC is readying the application for the city use permit, which contains all
pertinent details of what we propose to install, and a package with all relevant technical data on FM
broadcasting for the neighbors of the antenna. Prior to proceeding with our permit, we left an informational
letter at twenty of the closest surrounding houses to inform them of our intent. We received two emails
back asking for some additional information. No objections have been raised by neighbors or at city
council meetings.
After the use permit is approved, we would proceed to the building permit stage, and the design
review. From talks with city planners we anticipate the antenna could be ready to install by spring.
KOWS would like to thank all the City of Sebastopol’s councilors and staff for their enthusiastic
acceptance of KOWS into the fabric of Sebastopol’s life.
This effort has, and will take a lot of expense, volunteer time and effort, so please think about
donating to our antenna fund. As of January 1st 2016 we need about $15,000 more to complete the
installation.
Contributions can come in more ways than cash. You can donate your services: if a contractor,
please donate your labor and equipment to build the project: and if a supplier, you can provide the building
materials.
All contributions are tax-deductible by the paypal button on the KOWS website www.kows.fm or send a

Mushroom Farm - Dr Robb
by Robert Feuer
fr. p.6
“I’m very happy with the new studio,” Robb says. “KOWS is going in a very positive direction with
good leadership.” He hopes to be able to use his walker again someday, and is trying to raise money for
another car. “I regret, more than breaking my neck, losing that car I had.” With more mobility, he’d like to
do additional shows, because “it’s one of the few times I can get out.” He does use his motorized wheelchair
to take his dog for walks and get to the store. Friends, including some from KOWS, have been highly
supportive. His physical therapist says he’s constantly improving.
When asked if he felt he’d been unlucky in life, Rob replies, “Shit happens to people. It’s got to
happen to someone.”

It evidently changed his view of culture and music. While attending the Workshop he would go on to
