With an increasing number of new members, we are seeing lots of enthusiasm and participation in our events. We had a well attended lunch bunch cruise to St Charles Yacht Club, followed by an extended cruise to Tarpon point. From all comments received, it’s evident that all had a great time. Our next Cruising event will be an extended cruise to Naples from March 23 to March 25. The Silver Stars again delivered a successful AMI Kid’s Auction event exceeding their targets. Thanks to all GHYC members who made contributions and offered assistance to this event. This month we also hold our annual Fleet-In celebration, which will begin on Friday, March 17, with a dockside St Patrick’s Day party followed by a series of other activities on Saturday, including safety inspections, a “Swap Meet” and boat christenings. Sunday’s activities include an afternoon memorial event to honor our recently deceased members. The Fleet-In celebration will conclude with a parade of boats passing in review and a dinner at the Country Club. You will shortly see a survey, which we are sending to all of our members. We would appreciate if you’d take the time to participate since we will be guided by your responses and comments in charting the direction of GHYC going forward. Bob Allen, Commodore From the Commodore: 1 MARCH 2017 http://www.gulfharbouryachtclub.org Vice Commodore's Report by Mark Deprey Boaters night is your night. I have asked in the past for ideas for topics and have received only one or two. Our upcoming April meeting will include a brief discussion about how to properly and safely depart and re-enter Gulf Harbour Marina (which will apply to almost any marina) so be sure to attend that. Please bring me your ideas and I will try to make them happen. Safe boating! Rear Commodore Report by Chris Palmer REPORT FROM OUR TARPON POINT CRUISE: After a year’s absence, we returned to Tarpon Point. While it’s just a short run from Gulf Harbour, this extended cruise had all the excitement of our cruises to distant points. Our first night was a dinner party in the Admiral’s Suite overlooking our boats on the new floating docks below. With exceptionally great weather, the next day found folks, relaxing, shopping, and playing Bocce Ball. That evening we enjoyed a great meal with music and dancing before making it back to our boats or rooms well after Gulf Harbour midnight. We'd like to give a special thanks to Tom & Barb Hendricks and Don & Marge Lentnek for their valuable assistance throughout the event! ON THE NEXT PAGE: Here are cleaning tips from Scotties Canvas. If you contact them for any work to be done, remember to mention that you are a GHYC member to receive your 15% discount. Fort Myers, FL BBCDB (9BC) CCG-IJIC office 2 Care & Cleaning of Outdoor Fabrics and Clear Glass Fabrics Before beginning, identify the brand of fabric you’ll be working with. Specifics for care and cleaning can differ between materials. However, there are some practices you can employ to maximize the life and looks of your outdoor fabrics. Hose down your fabric periodically. This will wash away loose dirt, salt, etc. and prevent these contaminates from becoming ingrained. Never store wet materials. Allow them to air dry first. Trapped moisture can lead to mold and mildew growth. When it comes time for an actual cleaning, review and employ manufacturer recommendations. Failing to do so may result in damaging the material and even voiding the warranty. Below are cleaning instructions for some of the more popular marine fabrics. Stamoid® Stamoid® recommends using a sponge rather than a brush. Spray Stamoid® Marine Vinyl Cleaner on the immediate area to be cleaned, and lightly scrub with the sponge. Rinse thoroughly, and allow the fabric to air dry. Follow with an application of Stamoid® Marine Vinyl Protective Cream. Clear Glass Before beginning, identify the type of clear glass you’ll be working with. Clean regularly. Leaving dirt and salt on the surface can result in permanent discoloration. Never rub these products when they are dry unless noted. Doing so could result in scratches. Scotties Seaglass™ For most cleaning situations a simple polishing with Pledge® is all that is required. If your glass is heavily soiled with scratch causing debris flood the glass first with water before gently cleaning with a damp, soft cotton cloth, mild detergent and water. Sunbrella® and Herculite Riviera® Strataglass™ When the time comes to clean your fabric, begin by brushing off loose dirt with a soft-bristle brush. Hose down the fabric. Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap (dishwashing soap is ideal) and, using the same brush, clean the fabric. Allow the solution to sit and soak into the fabric for 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Allow the fabric to air dry. For heavy or stubborn stains using bleach should be a last resort because Sunbrella® can withstand the corrosiveness of bleach but some stitching may not. A tablespoon of bleach added to the solution above will do the trick. If waterproofing and UV retreatment is required, the factory recommends using 303® brand products. Strataglass™ stresses the use of IMAR products for cleaning and protection. Using harsh cleaners or wash-and-wax products will void your warranty. Never handle Strataglass™ with sunscreen on your hands. Begin by flushing thoroughly, not only to rinse off contaminates but to cool the glass as well. Using IMAR Yacht Soap Concentrate and a washing mitt or soft cotton cloth, clean the glass. Rinse the glass and dry completely with a high-quality chamois. Follow with a light application of IMAR Strataglass™ Protective Polish. With a soft cotton cloth, use a small, light circular motion. Once dried, the polish can be removed with a clean cotton cloth. Follow with a light buffing. For routine maintenance between polishing, use IMAR Strataglass™ Protective Cleaner. Weathermax™ Weathermax™ recommends using Ultramar Professional Textile Care Products for cleaning and treating their fabrics. The procedures are the same as for Sunbrella®, substituting Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo for the cleaning solution. Follow up with an application of Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Protector to restore water repellency and protection from contaminates. Regalite® and other Isinglass Clear Vinyl Flood the glass first with water before gently wiping it with a damp, soft cotton cloth. Never use products with silicones or alcohol in them. Use a mild detergent in water applied with a soft cloth is also suitable for heavier stains. The use of cleaners 3 specifically for clear vinyl also works well. http://www.gulfharbouryachtclub.org Fleet Captain Report MARCH 2017 by Mike Intravia Greetings !! We had 25 members in attendance. The discussion was led by Bunny Sher who was well prepared and did an excellent job of leading the discussion. Although we discussed the author a bit, Bunny felt the book itself deserved our full attention. She called the book sweet and loved the characters. She said, “it was what it means to be human." Bunny usually leads our classic book discussions. We all touted our favorite characters from Francie, to Katie, to Sissy, Johnny, Neely etc. and how their roles played well integrating their personalities as they were all so different. Poverty and class issues; education; gender and sex; perseverance through hardship; ethnic and religious identity were prevalent through the book. Fancie's relationship to reading changes throughout the novel. Reading and writing are the gifts that Katie can give her children as the first step toward a better life. She is read to before she even knows what words are, from the Bible and Shakespeare. Katie was willing to sacrifice herself by doing any menial task to improve her children’s lives. Education was extremely important to get ahead and Katie saw to it that Francie helped her younger brother Neely before herself. But Francie still managed to go to college. The first sentence of the book sets the tone, "The one tree in Francie's yard was neither a pine nor a hemlock. It had pointed leaves which grew along green switches which radiated from the bough and made a tree which looked like a lot of opened green umbrellas. Some people called it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed fell, it made a tree which struggled to reach the sky. It grew in boarded-up lots and out of neglected rubbish heaps and it was the only tree that grew out of cement. It grew lushly, but only in the tenement districts.” This book showed compassion and love in the midst of complete poverty. One Book Club Member noted that we still have impoverished neighborhoods today and history continues to repeat itself. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was a delightful read and highly recommended. The next Book Club is April 5 in the Boardroom of The Club at 1 PM. We are reading the Biography of Kathryn Graham called The Leadership Journey of an American Icon by Robin Gerber. All Gulf Harbour members are welcome. The Book Club is now coed. No need to RSVP. 7 http://www.gulfharbouryachtclub.org MARCH 2017 Pictures from ST. The evening started with a Silent Auction of 110 items from local merchants and members. The auction was put together by Lynda Zachar, Rita Keltner and Melanie Jackman and their committee, A new feature of “Buy it Now”was very popular as members elected to close the bidding on an item by bidding the asked price. . The silent auction generated a record $11,428. During the Silent Auction attendees were treated to a number of gourmet food stations prepared and serviced by the club. As usual the staff at GHCC outdid themselves to make a evening very enjoyable for everyone. Following the silent auction a live auction was held by this years Silver Stars chairman and event chairman Gary Morgan. Auctioneers were again Jen Stacy and Rob Spicker of Wink News in the morning and GHYC own John Hess. The bidding was fun, loud, entertaining and the 14 items put together by the Silver Stars raised a total of $116,824. A new feature this year was a wine pull put together by Lynda and Rita. AMI Kids Legacy members along with a number of GHYC members donated 74 bottles of wine valued at $50 to $200. Raffle tickets allowed the buyer to blind pull a bottle of wine, and also enter in a drawing for 3 bottles of wine valued at $250$450 donated by Cheryl and David Copham. The wine pull and the ticket sales generated $10,700. Included were three new Legacy memberships for $1000 each. John Ingraham introduced the seamanship program that is to be started at the school latter this year. The main need of the program was the purchase of a 22 foot center counsel boat. With an in-kind gift of $25,000 from San Carlos Marine, the GHYC members donated another $41,780 toward its purchase, outfitting and operation. The amount exceed the goal of $35,000. Total receipts for the evening were $181,447 and after expenses for the dinner and event expenses the net to the AMIKids Foundation is estimated to be $172,000. Add to this the $44,000 raised at this year’s Legacy member dinner held January 19 and GHYC members will continue to be the largest private supporter of the school with amount of $216,000 this year. All funds have been deposit with SWFL Community Foundation. The AMI Kids Foundation board will be meeting later this month to review long range plans put together by the school and to begin developing grants to support approved programs and needs. One of the main emphases of the Foundation board will be the development of vocational education programs at the school, and scholarships to vocational and two year schools.
