Mastering: Concept Map Submission and Scoring
Concept Map
items contain a Concept Map activity, in which you connect terms in a map to
form true statements. You have unlimited chances to create a correct map and check your work,
so you can get a perfect score if you leave yourself enough time.
Remember these things about Concept Maps:

First: Submission is different than regular Mastering: you submit Concept Maps in
THREE steps. You first submit the map to an external program that grades it. Then you
submit the grade to Mastering.

Second: Unlike Mastering, the program that grades your answer doesn’t save it. Once
you submit your map, you can’t see it again unless you save a copy during submission.
You’re prompted to save it.

Third: Concept Map scoring is different too; you get only full credit, half credit, or
nothing.
Creating Concept Maps
The Concept Map activity is always Part A of an item.
To begin work, open Part A and select Launch Concept Map. Work until you think you have the
map correct. Then select SAVE Map:

Close the activity window. You’ll see your score so far.
Select Launch Concept Map again to keep working until you get 100%.
Submitting Concept Maps
When you’ve saved a map with a score of 100%, select Launch Concept Map again. Very
important: don’t select the Mastering submit yet.
When you’re within the Concept Map activity, select SUBMIT Map. This is Step 1 of
submission.
You’re asked to confirm that you want to submit. Resume means you want to keep working on
the map. If you’re ready, select Submit. This is Step 2 of submission.
Now save your answer. In a new window or tab, you see your map with your answers marked
correct or incorrect.

Select Save & Download to create a backup copy of this map. Do this now; after you close this
window, you won’t see your map again.
In the Concept Map window, you see two tabs, My Concept Map and Reference Concept Map.
Use the Reference Concept Map to understand anything you got wrong. Do this now; after you
close this window, you won't see either map again.

When you close the Concept Map window, you can submit Part A, with your grade, in
Mastering. This is Step 3 of submission.
When your Concept Map score is submitted successfully in Mastering, you see a green
confirmation message:
If the item has any other parts, finish and submit them. Note these parts are scored like regular
Mastering questions, including limits on number of answer tries.
Scoring Concept Maps
Concept Map activities have only three possible scores. Your score depends heavily on leaving
yourself time to do the activity:

100% if the map is entirely correct. You have unlimited tries to do this.

50% if you use all terms and phrases but any part of the map is incorrect. If you start late,
you may be able to achieve no more than 50%.

0% if the map is missing any terms or phrases. You are warned before trying to submit a
map that will get no credit.
Credit for Concept Map items is applied the same way as it is for most Mastering items:

If an item has multiple parts, the parts are averaged to get the item score, and

To gain any credit for the item, you must complete the entire item.
