he movie Home was an interesting,
fun, and exciting movie. The movie
showed how you can work together to
accomplish something. This movie is about
aliens called the Boov who invade Earth
and capture the humans and send them to
Happy Human Land. The Gorgs are the enemies of the Boov, and the Gorgs are chasing
the Boov for something the Boov took from
them.
Oh, a Boov, is not like the others and
makes a lot of mistakes. A girl named Gratuity “Tip” Tucci cannot find her mother, so
Oh and Tip team up to find Tip’s mother.
They travel all around the world to fix Oh’s
mistake and to find Tip’s mom. They travel
in Tip’s car, which Oh turned into a hover
car that floats in the air.
Captain Smek, the head Boov, does
not approve of Oh and wants to erase him.
Tip and Oh travel on a long journey and
they discover more about each other. In
the end, Oh and Tip find Tip’s mom and Oh
ends up living with Tip and her mom. Oh
also becomes the Boov leader. 

The Lomita Leopard’s Roar attended a screening
of Home at Fox Studios with 8 other PressFriends
programs.
5TH GRADE’S MS. BRELAND

T
here is a teacher who is in charge of
the 5th grade trip to the Catalina
Island Marine Institute (CIMI) and
PressFriends, and who takes care of 32
kids. Her name is Ms. Brittany Breland,
and she is a very busy mom and teacher.
Ms. Breland is very nice and cool
about things and tries to not get mad at
anyone in PressFriends. She is always on
the computer helping with the newspaper.
For CIMI, she tries to get everyone organized and looks over students’ applications for mistakes. She also checks the
money so when we go we don’t have to
worry about the wrong payment. She also
checks students’ medications.
Ms. Breland told students that the
boat we take to Catalina Island is called
the Catalina Express. She calls it the barf
barge, and I totally agree with Ms. Breland.
Ms. Breland is very important to her
students. Without her, 5th graders would
not have fun in school. A gold star for a
great teacher!

W
ho’s a fifth grader?
Well, get ready to
have the time of your life!
The fifth grade class went to
CIMI in April! For those who
don’t know what CIMI is, it is
a field trip to Catalina Island
Marine Institute.
Catalina is an exciting
field trip where you can
learn new things and have
awesome fun! A teacher,
Mrs. Vlnkova, told us about
the trip ahead of time and
said we go snorkeling in
suits and have dorms to
sleep in. The dorms we
sleep in are separated between boys and girls.
We stayed 2 nights and 3
days, which seems like a
long time, but while you’re
having lots of fun, it passes
by fast. As they always say,
time passes by fast while
you’re having crazy fun.
Here’s the cool part, we
got to go on a boat our
whole way there. So if you
are seasick, then you should
stay inside the boat. That
means face the opposite of
the window and relax for 2
and half hours. CIMI is fun
and fifth graders couldn’t
wait for ultimate fun times
with friends, family, and
teachers.
So fourth graders, you
have a great trip to look forward to. Get a head start on
paying for CIMI because it is
expensive! Have a good
time!

THE AWESOME MS. HSIEH
L
omita Elementary
School has the most
amazing teacher ever. One
of the best teachers is Ms.
Cindy Hsieh, our amazing
5th grade teacher. Ms.
Hsieh is the best teacher
because she is nice, awesome, sweet and smart.
She has a daughter name
Julia, who looks just like
Ms. Hsieh.
Ms. Hsieh is in Room
35 and she has friends
like Ms. Wong, Ms. Vlonkova, Ms. Petite, and her
best friend, Ms. Breland.
Ms. Hsieh always goes out
to lunch with her friends.
She doesn’t forget to
take us to physical education unless there is something coming up. Classmates hate when she goes
to meetings because we
have double homework.
When it comes to performances, she wants classmates to get every part
and lyrics right.
When it comes to the
end of the day, many students give her a hug because they will miss her.
She is always thinking
about students and that is
why she is the best teacher in our school!

This movie is full of

be seen because it teaches a lesson to kids about
helping others.
I like UCLA because
it’s big. I like that it’s big
because it is good to explore and exercise.

H
ome is an awesome
movie for all ages. Jacob Lopez from the Lomita
Leopard’s Roar says, “The
movie was hilarious.”
In the movie an alien
species known as the Boov
have been running away
from their enemies, the
Gorgs. They finally found a
planet to settle on, and this
was planet Earth. The Boov
moved all of the humans to
Australia and moved into
Earth. Oh, a member of the
Boov, accidentally sent directions to planet Earth to
the Gorgs, so he became a
fugitive and must run away.
A girl named Tip is all alone
hiding from the Boov, who
she thinks are evil. She is
determined to find her
mom. When she meets Oh,
he promises to help her
find her mom.

T
he movie Home is
about humans and
aliens called the Boov. The
Gorgs invaded the Boov
planet so they moved to
planet Earth and made the
humans live in Australia.
The main characters are
Tip, Oh, Pig, Tip’s mom,
and Captain Smek. Tip is
trying to find her mom and
she runs into Oh, a Boov
who is very friendly and
nice. Tip and Oh become
friends, and they runaway
because Oh is afraid of
Captain Smek. Oh accidentally sent a message to
everyone in the galaxy
about a party at his house,
which was bad because
the Boov did not want the
Gorgs to find them. The
Gorgs found them before
Tip found her mom, so Oh
had to leave.

A VERY NICE HOME
T
he movie Home was
incredible and sad,
and it was really awesome
in 3D. The saddest part
was when Tip and Oh were
separated. The main characters were Tip (Rihanna),
Oh (Jim Parsons), and
Tip’s mom (Jennifer
Lopez). The movie Home
is about the Boov’s coming to take over the planet
Earth. The Boov went to
all of the countries on
Earth. Tip was looking for
her mom after the Boov
invasion. Tip was living in
her house alone with only
her cute cat.
UCLA was fun, but in
my opinion I wouldn’t go
to UCLA because it is a
large school and I could
get lost.

I think UCLA is a good
college and is a really
sporty place. The best thing
about UCLA is the bear
mascot.

ALL ABOUT JACKSON POLLOCK
D
o you love art? Well if
you, you might know
about Jackson Pollock.
Jackson Pollock is a famous artist. He is mostly
famous for his signature
splatter art.
Jackson Pollock was
born January 28, 1912,
and his birth name was
Paul Jackson Pollock.
Pollock lived with LeRoy
Pollock his dad, Stella May
McClure his mom, and four
older brothers. Pollock lived
in Arizona and when he
was 8 years old, his father
was an abusive alcoholic
and left his family.
Later Pollock moved to
LA and enrolled in Manual
Arts High School where he
discovered a passion for
art. In 1930 at the age of
18 Pollock moved to NYC
with his brother Charles. He
soon began studying with
Charles’s art teacher representational regionalist
painter Thomas Hart Benton at the Art’s Students
League.
Pollock began working
as a babysitter for Charles’
son while working with
Charles. Later in 1942 Pollock discovered Pablo Pi-
casso's art show at the
Museum of Modern Art.
Picasso's artistic experimentation encouraged
Pollock to push the boundaries of his own work. 3
years later Pollock met Lee
Krasner, also an artist, in
1942 and they were married in 1945. She was impressed with his artwork
and it had an influence on
her own work. In 1956,
their marriage was
strained by Pollock’s alcoholism, and Krasner left for
Europe to visit friends. She
had to rush back when
Pollock got into a car accident and was found dead
in a birch tree.

THE HOBBIT
D
o you want to read a
book that is both a
quest and awesome? If
you do, you should read
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has creative races such as elves or
dwarves, and awesome
places like the Iron Hills, or
Lake Town.
In this story we unfold
the amazing adventure of
Bilbo Baggins, an unlikely
hero who is a hobbit. Bilbo
is the fourteenth member
of the stories team. He is
chosen by Gandalf to be
the so- called ‘burglar’ of
the crew. Gandalf is a wizard, who may appear to be
aged and weak, but is exactly the opposite.
The main members of
this crew are the dwarves.
All thirteen survived the
terrible battle with Azog,
the master orc. There is
Thorin (the leader), Fili, Kili,
Bifur, Bofur, Bomber, Nori,
Ori, Dori, Oin, Gloin, Dwalin
and Balin. All fourteen are
set on a quest to retrieve
their home in the Lonely
Mountain from Smaug, the
evil dragon who has selfishly took their home.
Along the way they encounter some unlikely
friends like Bard, the fisherman, and Berorn, the skin
changer.
Did you The Hobbit inspired most fictional stories? Stuff like Star Wars
and Harry Potter may all
have been influenced by
The Hobbit. At the end of
the story, it gets kind of sad
because, well you can read
it. Please, if you want an
awesome book, read The
Hobbit.

SKATEBOARDING
S
kateboards are a
great way to get
around. They are fun to
have… if you can ride one.
There are many different kinds of skateboards—
the Trickboard, Pennyboard, Longboard, and
Nickelboard. The Longboards are very long, Trickboards are for tricks and
cruising . Pennyboards are
very short, and Nickelboards are like Penny-
boards, but a little longer.
They are all great skateboards.
9 out of 10 people said
that skateboards were
safe enough to ride. Do
you want to get a skateboard?
In a recent poll by the
Lomita Leopard’s Roar, 8
of 11 people said that a
skateboard is the best
type of transportation.
There are also many
different parts for a skateboard. Trucks are what
connect the wheel to the
board. The board is actually called the deck. The best
voted kind of wheels is the
gel. Most people said that
the gel wheels make the
skateboard move faster
and smoother.

alo Wars is a T-rated
game and it is like Star
Wars because it takes place
in space and in the planets
and it has weapons for
fighting.

I think Halo Wars could
be combined with Star Wars
because some may like Star
Wars and others may like
Halo Wars, but it doesn’t
matter if you put them to-
gether, It would be total chaos and battles. Then you
have to see who wins and
which characters are stronger.

ENDANGERED GREEN TURTLE
D
o you love animals?
Well, if you do, here’s
an article you would love to
read. All over the world there
are endangered animals and
that mean’s their species
are close to extinction. This
article will be talking about
the Green Turtle one of the
many endangered animals.
The Green Turtle is one of
the largest sea turtle and
the only herbivore among
the different species. Green
Turtles are in fact named for
the greenish color of their
cartilage and fat, not their
shells.
Green Turtles are found
mainly in tropical and subtropical waters. Like other
sea turtles, they migrate
long distances between
feeding grounds and the
beaches from where they
were hatched. Sometimes
the cause of their extinction
is that some people take
Green Turtles eggs when
they see them on the beach.
In many countries it is illegal
to kill or harm the turtle
eggs. Also a fun fact is turtles are a sign of good luck.

the Green Turtle are you can
help save them!

ENDANGERED GREAT PANDA
T
here are many types of
endangered animals.
One of them is the Giant
Panda. This animal is a
treasure to China. These
animals are related to most
bears living around the
world. They live in bamboo
forests in the high mountains in China. Giant Pandas
seem to disappear due to
the cause of bamboo forest
destruction,
which are
causing their homes to be
destroyed. Without the bamboo, the animals started to
die. These creatures also
began to die because hunters were hunting for other
animals in the panda habitat
and killing the animals accidentally.
Giant Pandas are national
creatures and they are in
great danger. We need to
help these unique animals
because they’re important to
many people. We can help
these animals escape danger by being aware of our
surroundings and environment. The giant panda is an
animal that should hunt and
not be hunted.

ENDANGERED GRAY WOLVES
D
o you know what endangered animals are?
Well, they are types of animals that are trying to be
saved from going extinct.
One of the animals, the
Gray Wolves varies in color
from gray to black to brown!
This animal is an ancestor of
the domestic dog. It looks
similar to German Shep-
herds and Malamutes.
These wolves have very
meaty diets. They eat large
hoofed mammals such as
elk, deer, moose, and caribou. They may also eat beavers, rabbits, and other
small animals. Wolves might
also eat animals that died if
necessary. That is called
being a scavenger.
Wolves usually live in
forests and rocky, mountains where they dig their
dens to keep warm and
have shelter.
Gray wolves were taken
off the endangered list in
2012 by the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Services but were
put back on last year.

antdm is a professional YouTuber. He was
born in England in November 8, 1991. His first
YouTube channel was about
Pokémon. He started out
with a few subscribers now
he has 5 million subscribers. He does Minecraft mod
showcases and a lot of
Minecraft videos. .
He also does a really
cool survival series with a
bunch of mods. He usually
does a vlog now and then.
Dantdm is married to a
woman named Jemma. She
also used to be a YouTuber
but she stopped in 2013.
He has two dogs; one
of his dogs is named Ellie,
the oldest one, the other
one is the youngest one
named Dorsie. They are
both pugs.
He post things every
day. He posts his moded
survival on Wednesday
and Sunday. He occasionally does other games but
rarely. I hope you can
watch him.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US
W
hich video game has
action packed
fighting and DC superheroes? Injustice Gods Among
Us. It was made by Netherealm Studios, DC Comics,
and published by Warner
Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Injustice can be played
on the PlayStation 3, Wii U,
Xbox 360, and Apple and
Samsung Galaxy devices.
When the player starts
the game, they only start
with bronze characters. In
order to level up your characters, the player has to
keep on fighting. To complete the game, the player
must complete many battles, with each battle containing about a dozen or
more fights.
After a fight, you earn
Alliance Credits, which can
be used to buy booster
packs or DC characters.
Another way to get characters is by completing challenges. For challenges, you
always have a limited time,
which is about 17 days.
Some characters the
player can get in challenges are Killer Frost, Red Son
Green Lantern, Animated
Batman Beyond, 600 Wonder Woman, Aqua Man and
many more. This game is
completely awesome!

CLASH OF CLANS
C
lash of Clans is a fun
mobile game. There are
many kinds of interesting
things in Clash of Clans. The
most important part in the
game is the Town Hall.
Another cool part is the
barracks. The Barracks train
troops that could take a couple of hours or just minutes.
There are different kinds of
troops. Archers, P.E.K.K.A,
Barbarians, Wizards, Giants,
Goblins, Wall Breakers, Bal-

loons, Healers, and Dragons are made of regular
Elixir. Minions, Hog Riders,
Lava Hounds, Witches,
Golem, and Valkyrie are
made out of Dark Elixir.
Barbarian King and
Archer Queen are the
guardians that help defend
your base. Archer Queen
has a power-up ability that
can turn her invisible and
bring reinforcement troops.
The clan castle helps store
troops. In clans there are
Elders, Co-Leaders, Leaders, and Members.
There are also Clan
Wars. If you get a victory in
a Clan War you can get a
lot of Elixir and Gold. The
number one defense in
Clash of Clan is walls. The
second is Wizard Towers,
Cannons, and Archer Towers. Clash of Clans is awesome.

ANGRY BIRDS
W
hat is a fun game with
birds with special
powers, egg stealing pigs,
and bird launching fun? Angry Birds of course!
Angry Birds is a fun
game that was released December 2009 for free on
Apple’s IOS (which is a type
of Apple software). In this
game, the birds have three
eggs until pigs are tired of
eating grass, so the king pig
decides to steal the eggs to
eat them. This makes the
birds angry and makes it
their mission to get their
precious eggs back.
In the game, players can
play as one of the 9 birds
which includes the red bird
(s), yellow bird, blue bird(s),
black bird(s), white bird(s),
big red bird(s), orange bird
(s), green bird(s) and pink
bird(s) who has to defeat a
minion pig(s), a corporal pig
(s), mustache pig(s), or the
king pig. To defeat these
mischievous green pigs,
players must sling shot the
birds by dragging the bird on
the slingshot and letting go
and the bird will be launched.
It will not be that easy to
defeat the pigs because
they will be hiding in buildings, so the birds have to
knock it down and defeat
the pigs. A thing to remember is that in each level
there will be a different
amount of pigs, birds, and
different buildings.
Each bird also has a
special power. The red bird
does nothing, the blue bird
splits into 3, the white bird
drops an egg that explodes,
the yellow bird speeds up,
the black bird explodes, the
orange bird inflates, the pink
bird makes bubbles that lifts
things in the air, the green
bird acts like a boomerang,
and the big red bird breaks
tougher materials easier.
Again this game is a fun
game for free on mobile devices. As the level advances,
the building gets harder to
break through and don’t
worry if a game is completed
because there are different
Angry Birds games like Angry
Bird Space, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio.

MY SINGING MONSTERS
M
y Singing Monsters, a
musical game for tablet/phone is made by Big
Blue Bubble Inc. Every single
monster species sounds
different. Many monsters
sound great together, like the
mammot and toe jammer,
In this game, you buy the
monsters that cost coins,
then get to a level near 10,
then get a breeding structure to breed the monsters
that cost diamonds.
There are certain species of monsters that cost a
lot of diamonds. The
shugabush costs 200 diamonds. You can also breed
it, but it’s hard, because you
need the clamble and bowgart. There is a whole island
for the shugabush, and
there is a band full of different guitarists, a drummer,
and a singer. The ghazt
costs 1,000 diamonds. The
entbrat costs 150 diamonds,
and the wubbox costs
75,000,000 coins (plus certain monsters to activate it).
On every island in this
game, all monsters sound
different, and you discover
new monsters, like the tweedle, and dandidoo on the
cold island, the second island you get.
There also are holiday
monsters. The punkleton is
a skeleton with a pumpkin
on his head, and you can
only breed him in October,
or get him in the weekly
monster scratch. The yool is
a santa-like character with
antlers with bells on them
and he can be bred in the
cold island, in the winter.

can be bred until Feb. 15th.
The blabbit is a really
messed up bunny that can
be bred on Easter, on the
water island.

COOL CLONE WARS CHARACTERS
R
ako Hardeen is a human male from the
planet of Concord Dawn.
Rako Hardeen s a character
from Star Wars the clone
wars TV show. He has a tattoo on the left of his face
because he was part of a
group known as Marvasas
Marauders. His companion,
Moralo Eval, work together.
In one Clone Wars episode, Moralo Eval convinced
Hardeen and Cad Bane to
enter “The Box”, an obstacle
course that Eval himself
designed and created. If you
survived the box, you would
be entered in a plot to assassinate Senator Palpatine
at the Naboo festival. But
what Moralo and Bane did-
n’t know was that Hardeen
was really a Jedi master Obiwan in a genetic disguise! In
the end, Moralo and Bane
were captured and sent
back to jail. But Anakin Skywalker was mad because he
thought that Obi-wan was
dead and so did his apprentice, Ashoka Tano.

SUPER SMASH BROS 4
S
uper Smash Bros is the
most amazing game for
the Nintendo 3DS in the
WORLD besides Pokémon
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Super Smash Bros’
character list is really long.
With the newcomers Little
Mac, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt,
Rosalina and Luma, Mega
Man, Villagers, Wii Fit Train-
er, Bowser Jr., Greninja,
Shulk, Lucina, Robin, and
etc., all characters have
joined the battle.
“Blah blah blah” is what
some people say to this
game, but that means they
haven’t faced the Super
Smash Bros Champion, The
Emergency Room. Every 10
matches a challenger will
come along. If you lose, you
can do another match.
One character which is
the Mii. Players can choose
a mii already created—from
swordfighter, brawler, and
gunner.

her name is now potatOS,
yes, a potato with a name.
This game is not normal
at all, is it! And then you
have to defeat the “Evil
Wheatley Core” as the last
level. Then the roof gets
ripped off and then you
shoot a portal to the moon
(the light side because you
can only shoot your portal
gun on white surfaces) and
Wheatley tries to convince
you to not let him off into
space, but you’re getting
sucked in too. Then you let
go of Wheatley, and potatOS
gets her body back and
gladOS saves you from floating off into space with the
space core. You don’t want
to be with him, because
pretty much all he says is
“SSPPAAAAACE!!!!”
Grab a friend and head
off into the co-op test chambers as Atlas and P-Body.
Right at the end, when
gladOS saves you, you pass
out and once you wake up,
Atlas and P-body helped you
too!

PORTAL 2
P
ortal 2 is a game made
by Valve. Portal 2, in the
campaign mode, you are a
test subject named Chell. A
core named Wheatley helps
Chell in her journey. He is
basically your tutorial. He
tells you about gladOS, an
“evil” core that controls the
whole aperture science facility. But then (spoiler alert!!!!)
Wheatley becomes evil and
takes over gladOS' body,
and remember, these are
robots. So Wheatley Is basically the new gladOS, and
gladOS, don’t ask why, but

ressFriends had an
amazing year at Lomita
Math/Science Magnet
School. We had a really talented group of reporters, but
of this would have been possible without the support of
your principal, Ms. Monica
Friedman, and with your
PressFriends faculty advisor,
Ms. Brittany Breland.
We are very grateful to
Ms. Breland for volunteering
her time to oversee all of the
afterschool newspaper club
meetings and to give up her
weekend so that the newspaper staff could attend our
6th Annual Conference for
Elementary Student Newspapers at Twentieth Century
Fox Studios in Century City
and the University of California, Los Angeles.
We had a great Annual
Conference with 8 of our
programs attending and a
total of 250 people. We are
grateful to Twentieth Century Fox for inviting PressFriends to its studio lot to a
screening of the new Dream-
works movie called HOME.
Afterwards, we went to
UCLA for a fun anti-bullying
presentation by Mrs. Lisa
Saldivar, former principal of
7th Street Elementary, and a
fun scavenger hunt around
UCLA. Then all of the reporters received trophies for
their excellence in reporting.
We hope you all have a
great summer, and we hope
to see you next year in
