Ryan: I don't know what to do. She's so beautiful, but I don't know what to say....
Alan: It can't be all that bad. She's just a person
like you or me....
Ryan: What should I do? Should I ask her on a date?
Alan: Why don't you go slowly? Just sit down
next to her in the cafeteria, or in class.
Anywhere. Say, "Hi, how are you?" "My name
is Ryan." You know, the simple things.
Ryan: But she'll just turn away.
Alan: No, she won't. She'll say "Hi, nice to meet
you." You should be more confident.
Ryan: That's easy for you to say!
Alan: Would you like me to speak to her first?
Ryan: NO, you are too dangerous!
Alan: What? Dangerous? What are you talking
about?
Ryan: Oh come on, you know all the girls are
crazy for you.
Alan: Please ... you're joking!
Ryan: Anyway, what should I do?
Alan: You should go over there now. You
should introduce yourself and have a conversation. It's easy.
Ryan: OK, here I go ...
Alan: Good luck. And remember, SMILE!

To live forever
Thoughts of the possibility of living
forever are embedded deep in every
person's imagination. These dreams
of immortality are evidenced by characters in fables, myths, and movies.
From Dorian Gray to Highlander, literature is filled with noted immortals.
- Peter Pan: This is the famous
lad who never grows old. He would
rather cavort with fairies, and fight
pirates on the island of Neverland.
- Dracula: If you want to live forever, then seek out this vampire, and
ask him to bite you. Of course, for the
remainder of your life, you will have
to drink blood, and sleep in a coffin.
- Lazarus Lon: This character
from Robert Heinlien's science fiction
stories lives forever as a result of a selective breeding program. He also
goes for the frequent blood rejuvenation treatment. Robert is also quite
the traveler, as he visits other planets,
and can even travel through time.
- Nicholas Flamel: A major character in the Harry Potter novels, he
drinks a magical elixir which guaran-
tees eternal life.
- Tithonus: As the mortal lover of
Eos, he is granted eternal life by Zeus.
However, he eventually becomes
frail, begs for death, and is turned into a grasshopper.
- Dorian Gray: Perhaps Oscar
Wilde's most famous personage, he
never ages; however, his portrait does
as he becomes more and more monstrous.
- Highlander: In this film, Connor
MacLeod character lives forever unless his head is lopped off.
- Grail Knight: In the film,
"Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade," this immortal man's task is
to guard the Holy Grail.
- Methuselah: The oldest person
from the Bible, he is the grandfather of
Noah, who was expected to live forever, but died at the ripe old age of 969.
- Arwen: This beauty from "The
Lord of the Rings" renounced her
immortality when she married
Aragorn, the King of Gondor, and
eventually died when she was 2901.

Adana kebab
In a previous narrative, I wrote about
American kebab - how to prepare it
and why I prefer it to Turkish kebab. I
realized that this would be affronting
to some Turks, and knew that it was
only a matter of time before someone
would complain. Sure enough, Tuba,
a colleague I have the pleasure of
working with, wanted to know just
how anything could possibly be better
than Adana kebab. She also said that I
should look up a recipe for Adana kebab, and make it at home.
I found several on the Internet,
and so to offer solace for poor Tuba's
hurt feelings, I have decided to print it
here. Without further ado, here it is:
- Put about 700g of minced lamb
meat in a large bowl.
- Cut one onion and, along with a
tablespoon of butter, add it to the
meat. Then, add a bit of cumin, co-
riander and red pepper.
- Cut a sweet pepper into small
chunks, and then puree it using a
blender. Add this to the meat mixture.
- Add salt.
- Knead the meat mixture.
- Divide the meat into four, equalsized, rectangular kebabs.
- Put the meat on long skewers.
- Cover with olive oil.
- Grill the meat on an outdoor
grill for about 15 minutes.
If you like your kebab spicy, then
add more red pepper. Most people
will slice the kebabs in half for easier
grilling. Salad, bread and rice are the
consummate side dishes to accompany Adana kebab. Parsley, mint and
lemon juice can also be served.
Adana kebab is surely good, but I
still prefer American kebab. My humble apologies, Tuba!
