Data volumes double approximately every two years,
reaching the zettabytes by 2020. 80% is unstructured
data, the growth of which is further accelerated
by new technologies such as high-resolution imaging,
surveillance drones, medical innovation, seismic data,
and sensor data from the Internet of Things. This growth
has forced companies to change from the traditional
three-tier storage architecture (primary storage
/ backup / archive) to simpler two-tier architectures,

Why Scality RING for Active Archives?
An Active Archive is a primary copy of less frequently accessed information that has been transparently moved
from the primary production storage to lower cost systems without impacting user or application workflows. Users
can access the data as quickly and easily as when the data was still in primary storage, and the data has the same
durability. Scality RING enables organizations to build exabyte-scale Active Archives that have all the performance
benefits of disk storage, and can present long-term cost advantages over tape.

Large Federal Customer
A large, US Federal organization has used the Scality RING to build a 34PB Active Archive (34PB usable, 46PB of raw storage hardware),
replacing their tape-based archives. This Active Archive is deployed over four sites to ensure durability and availability to end users in
various geographic locations. The key benefits were the intelligent data protection through mixed erasure coding and replication, the
flexibility in hardware selection, and the low management effort and unlimited scalability features that enable the organization to grow
the archive without migration or forklift upgrades over the next few decades.
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is responsible for ensuring the safety of the US nuclear arsenal. International test ban treaties
have replaced physical device tests with complex computer simulations, which can run for many months. Each exploration generates
many petabytes of data. Evaluating different scenarios requires restarting a simulation from a specific checkpoint several months back
and placing it into the current simulation. Static tape archives were no longer meeting the requirements. Realizing this, LANL decided
to build an active, disk-based archive using the Scality RING. LANL required a cost-effective storage strategy that could ensure data
protection using advanced erasure coding, provide unified file and object storage that would be be easy to deploy and manage at
scale, and employ standard, consumer-grade disk as the primary storage medium. The RING-based archive is designed to scale to 100’s
of PBs and beyond.
