HELP
You may know the Y for our equipment, exercise classes, courts,
or camps, but the Y is much more than movement and machinery.
We offer transformative programs in teen leadership, afterschool
and summer learning, youth employment, mentoring, a summer
food program, social support and connections to community. We
touch the lives of 1,200 teens in Los Alamos and Rio Arriba
counties, and improve the health of 8,000 in Los Alamos.
And it is free or at low cost for those who need it most. That’s
where you come in.
You can help us make our community stronger as we reach
people of all ages and backgrounds. When you volunteer or give,
you’re building a stronger community.
And you can choose the impact you’ll make.
You can volunteer as a campaigner, contribute to our Annual
Campaign that ensures access to some 275 children and adults
each year, leave a legacy gift to our Endowment Campaign that
invests in future Y programs, make a gift to our past gymnasium
Capital Campaign, or any combination of these.
From safe spaces to academic achievement, to family well-being
and more, when you donate to the Y, you’re giving those in need the
opportunity to thrive. Give for a better us.
Together we can build a better us.

WHY WE’RE HERE
FOR
YOUTH
DEVELOPMENT
Nuturing the potential of every child and teen
We believe that positive activities and influences from an
early age help youth develop and achieve their potential.
And we believe all youth deserve this opportunity. The Y
supports youth through the development process, helping
them cultivate the values, skills and relationships
necessary to be active, thriving and contributing members
of society.
FOR
HEALTHY

Improving community health & well-being
FOR
SOCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY
Giving back & supporting our neigbors
At the Y, we support health and well-being, empower
people to lead fuller lives, and foster connections through
fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result,
youth, adults and families receive the support, guidance
and resources they need to become and stay healthy.
We’re here for good. The Y has been listening and
responding to outstanding social needs in our
community for the last 60 years. Whether
supporting youth leadership, improving community trails,
teaching chronic disease prevention, or
collaborating with partners to address critical
issues, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need
and deserve. And we’re here for all. As a
charity and with support from our donors and
volunteers, we ensure access for all through
financial assistance scholarships. We believe
everyone deserves the chance to belong.
LIVING OUR CAUSE
The Family YMCA’s mission is to build individual, family and community strength by
focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Our purpose
is to provide opportunities for all ages to learn new skills, try hard and succeed, and
connect with community. We believe these experiences build character and help
us all grow in spirit, mind and body. As a 501c3 charity, we ensure access for all
through scholarships.

MANAGE YOUR CHRONIC DISEASE (MyCD) PROGRAM
“When I started getting into swimming, I felt comfortable. The
instructor was also a swim coach and this became competitive
swimming for me and my brother. I lived for the Y. I became a
part of something there. I was good at swimming and made more
friends there than school. Swimming became part of our everyday
life. After school, I swam, then went home. For me,that ‘Y’ symbol
has always been huge. I think it saved my life. I didn’t feel good
about myself in the new place. I was nothing. I was weird. All my
clothes were homemade, kids made fun of me, I was bullied.
Swimming gave me confidence again.”
– Andrea Mena Lynch,
reflecting on being a child refugee who spoke no English,
and how the Y helped her to belong again.
If you have a condition such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart
disease, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, or other chronic health condition, a
MyCD Workshop can help you take charge of your life. You’ll get the support you
need, find practical ways to deal with pain and fatigue, discover better
nutrition and exercise choices, understand new treatment choices, and learn
better ways to talk with your doctor and family about your health. These 2½
hour classes meet weekly for six weeks at the Betty Ehart Senior Center,
662-8920. Class TBD

PERSONAL NUTRITION COUNSELING
Understanding the relationship between nutrients and your health empowers
your food decision-making and results in your having more energy, feeling

When school lets out, the Y is in! Y kids eat a healthy snack, release their energy
playing, enjoy the company of friends, get their homework done and learn something
new. Seasoned staff engage children in fun group games where honesty and fair play
are reinforced and kids are introduced to new
projects that let them explore their creativity. Y
kids take field trips and participant in community
service projects, too. They frequently have so much
fun that they don’t want to go home. The Y’s enriching
After-School programs are held at each elementary
school from the time school lets out until 5:45pm.
Fees depend on the number of days enrolled. We offer
