The Vine
June 8, 2016
From the desk of Superintendent Chris Williams
Thank you to everyone for your efforts in preparing us for an outstanding week of promotion and
graduation ceremonies. Teachers, administrators, support staff, parents, and community members – everyone
played a part in helping our students with this achievement. I look forward to celebrating the success of our
students. Congratulations to all and especially the class of 2016!

Recognizing our Retirees
All PRJUSD employees are invited to attend a luncheon honoring our 2015-16 retirees. It will be held on Monday, June
13th, at 11:30 AM at the Culinary Arts Center. We will be celebrating nearly 50 retirees. Congratulations on such a great
accomplishment and hope to see everyone there!
District Elementary Soccer Champions
The first year of elementary athletics has officially come to an end. We had
hundreds of students participate in after-school sports which included cross
country, volleyball, wrestling, basketball,
track & field, and soccer. Thank you to all of
the coaches, parents, and athletes for all
their hard work. Thank you also to our
secretaries and principals who helped all
year to collect forms, help with
transportation, inform parents, and
everything else that goes along with setting
up a new program. We look forward to next
year!
Congratulations to our final district champions of the year:
4th & 5th grade boys’ soccer: Bauer Speck
4th & 5th grade girls’ soccer: Virginia Peterson
Dance Teacher Wins Award
Dance!
The Caroline Huetter Foundation awarded Alexa Vonderhoff
$1000 for her dedication to making dance accessible for all
students. John Huetter presented the award at the VAPA
collaboration meeting at Winifred Pifer. The award is given to
young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 and focuses on those
who are giving back to the community. The website for the
foundation is thecarolinehuetterfoundation.org. Alexa was
nominated by Robin Kosin who felt Alexa's calm positivity and
encouragement has greatly impacted the students of Paso
Robles. In particular Robin talked about how Alexa has connected
dance with students who are on the autism spectrum and how
she gives them the opportunity to grow through dance.
Speaking of dance, here are some of our students performing
their year-end dances. These are students from Winifred Pifer
Elementary and Kermit King Elementary. Great job, Panthers
and Frogs!
Bauer Speck End-of-the-Year Fun
Bauer Speck Elementary is making the most of its last week of
school! Students were treated to a BMX bike assembly. The
students with perfect attendance took a limo ride downtown
and were treated to lunch for their reward. The employees who
are retiring this year had a little fun with the students as well.
Bauer Speck Elementary is also proud to recognize 49 students
in their reclassification assembly. The students received
certificates and had the opportunity to watch a folklorico dance
performance.
One Cool Earth Corner
Just because school is starting its summer break, doesn’t mean that the gardens
will stop operating as well. One Cool Earth will be helping to teach a cooking
program with the after school program PRYDE this summer as well as providing
garden instruction. If you and your children would like to stay connected to the
gardens this summer, please contact us! We are still looking to have materials
donated and find volunteers to assist with garden maintenance for this summer.
Please contact our AmeriCorps Member, Audrey Moorhead, at
[email protected] for opportunities and information.
CIF State Track & Field Meet
Our final two Bearcat spring athletes represented Paso Robles in the CIF State Track
and Field Championships this past weekend in Clovis. Kristen Thompson finished her
season in 20th place in the state in shot put and Codie Wilshusen earned 23rd place in
the high jump. Great season by these PRHS athletes!
Flamson Middle School AVID
Congratulations to the Flamson Middle School
AVID students for finishing off their year. The
students celebrated with a potluck where they
had a chance to share their college dreams.
Best of luck to these students as they work to
achieve those college goals!
Flamson Students of the Month
Congratulations to the Flamson Middle School Students of the
Month for May! These students were recognized for being PAW
some and demonstrating positive behavior.
Meet the Author at Pat Butler Elementary
Butler Elementary students got the opportunity to hear from local author,
Hugo Haselhuhn, who came to discuss his two books: Lucas Lightfoot and the
Underwater Tombs and Lucas Lightfoot and the Fire Crystal. Mr. Haselhuhn
became an author when his grandson came to him and asked for help writing a
book. The two
collaborated and they
now are working on their
third novel. He discussed
his books with students in 2nd – 5th grades. Pictured here are the
winners of the “ask the author a question” contest.
Performing Arts Summer School
In partnership with Cuesta College we will offer our first Middle School Enrichment
program focusing on Performing Arts. This program will run June 20th – July 1st from 8 AM –
12 PM and is open to any incoming 7th and 8th grade students. For more info, contact
Marcy Goodnow [email protected].
REALL Project
Last week, more than sixty 8th
grade students from both
middle schools participated in
the REALL (Reality Enrichment
And Life Lessons) dropout
prevention program. REALL
project is an active, handson
experience that challenges young adults to think critically about
their life through simulation of a reactive life and a proactive life.
The project simulates living as an adult in which the
consequences students make in high school can have an effect
on their adult life.
Students learned that bad decisions may lead to dropping out of
high school, early pregnancy, and lowpaying jobs. Further,
students learned the consequences of being convicted of a crime.
After the reactive segment of the project, students then got to live
out a life based on “good decisions,” leading to higher paying jobs,
money for vacations, ability to buy a house, pay for unforeseen
emergencies, and child care. During the last 25 minutes of the
simulation, students gathered in small groups and reflected on
their life lessons and shared what they had learned with the adult
volunteers. Thank you to Cabinet members and Trustees who
visited the event. A special thank you to Donna Kelley from the
Kayla Peach Foundation, Frankie Norte, Trustee Summers, the
entire Student Services Department, and the 20 volunteers
(including Liberty High School students) for putting on the event.
Bearkitten Preschool
Congratulations to our youngest graduates, the Bearkitten
Preschool graduates! These future Bearcats celebrated
with a ceremony last Friday in the PRHS Performing Arts
Center.
8th Grade Celebration
The next group of future Bearcats celebrated the end of middle school with a
party at Kennedy Fitness. Here are some pictures of the event. Check the new
school websites for more specific information regarding the promotion
ceremonies.
PRHS Seal of Biliteracy Ceremony
Congratulations to the students who earned their Seal of Biliteracy.
These students were recognized in a ceremony this past Monday
night. They completed the requirements to earn the seal which
included demonstrating proficiency in a foreign language.
Scholarship Night
Congratulations to the class of 2016 who earned over $200,000 in
scholarships this year! And thank you to the 50+ community members
who donated and helped to distribute the 175 scholarships. Pictures of
all the recipients are available on the Crimson website: http://www.crimsonnewsmagazine.org/

Volunteers Needed
My name is Elissa Williams and I am a member of the Re/Max Realty “Up with Kids”
committee. It is my pleasure to announce that it's time for our 15th annual Up with
Kids – Back to School Shopping Spree. We are sending this message to you all
because you are valued members to our community and we need your help. To
effectively move another 100+ kids through in the 2 hours Target reserves for us
requires a ton of coordination and the help of approximately 200 community
volunteers. Last year, volunteer assistance was an invaluable contribution, which
helped us have a very successful event and up to 128 kids got off on the right foot
when returning to school with new clothes, shoes, backpacks and school supplies.
We need your help once again! Please contact us at (805)591-5348 and/or (805)2865196, or email Elissa Williams at [email protected] and/or Mick De Leon at [email protected] and let us
know if and how you would like to participate. The event will be Saturday morning, August 6, 2016 at 6:00 am at the
Target store on Theatre Dr., Paso Robles. We will need our volunteers to report a little earlier and we should be wrapping
up the event between 8 & 8:30 am. In addition, we are collecting canned and dry goods to further assist the families,
which can be brought to the event. We are also asking for cash contributions that will go toward buying school supplies.
This year marks the first time we've been able to offer scholarships to graduating high school students who have
successfully completed an Up with Kids application process. The scholarships will be presented to the recipients at their
graduation ceremony. We hope to make the scholarship program an ongoing annual event. If you wish to contribute,
make checks payable to Up with Kids (a benefit account at Wells Fargo Bank) and mail to RE/MAX Parkside Real Estate,
711 12th Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your immediate response and assistance,

SkillsUSA Sponsor Appreciation Dinner
The following is a news article submitted by our own
Randy Canaday. Please read below to hear about the
sponsor appreciation dinner and to see a list of
community supporters.
SkillsUSA Sponsor Appreciation Dinner was a great
success for 2016. Sponsors for PRHS SkillsUSA,
Chapter 211 contributed over $50,000. This will assist
the students participating in SkillsUSA financially for
the 2016 SkillsUSA Leadership & Skills
Conferences. Over 160 students participated in the
Region 2 Contest last Feb. 6, 2016. 55 of those
competing in the Regional Contest were advanced to the State Conference in April 2016. 32 of the 55 contestants were
selected as Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists.
Eight contestants who won Gold Medals are now invited to the National Leadership & Skills Conference in Louisville, Ky
June 20 - 24, 2016. The contestants are sponsored by our community Industry Partners and individuals honored at the
Appreciation Dinner May 25.
The students advancing are:
Mason Brown - Telecommunications Cabling,
Destini McAllen-Alcaraz - Commercial Baking,
Cassidy Moses - Early Childhood Education (second year at Nationals),
Alim BenBrahim - Electrical Construction Wiring,
Serae Collins - Mobile Electronics Installation,
Aca McDonald - Marine Service Tech. (second year at Nationals),
Mason Steiner - Plumbing (second year at Nationals),
Nick Cummings - Welding Sculpture.
The Sponsor Appreciation Dinner held Wednesday night at the Culinary Arts Facility was attended by Sponsors, Parents,
High School Officials, Advisors (instructors to students) and the food was served by all of the Medalists in recognition to
the Sponsors for their financial assistance.
141 people attended the Dinner. Dr. Patrick Sayne delivered an excellent presentation on the history of (CTE) Career
Technical Education. He assured everyone that Technical Training is building in both the Federal and State levels of
government. Public Education has recognized the importance of CTE in our Education systems, K - 14 years of school. Dr.
Sayne recognized SkillsUSA as a critical function for this educational shift.
The Sponsors were 47 strong. Representing three levels of contributing, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Gold Sponsors
contribute $1000 or more. Silver Sponsors contribute $500 - $999. Bronze Sponsors contribute $250 - $499. PRHS
SkillsUSA is very fortunate to be sponsored by such a giving and concerned community for the High School
students. Please recognize these Sponsors for their continued contributions. Many of them have been sponsoring
Chapter 211 for thirteen years. Their caring and giving financially to our youth is why PRHS SkillsUSA continues to be one
of the best Chapters representing California.
