A Message from Administration
What a great start to the school year! We are thrilled with the number of students
already feeling 'back at home' at
Central and looking ready to learn. The camaraderie that is seen in the classrooms
and on the school yard with students and teachers makes us proud once again this
year. Also, as equally as exciting, is the number of students who are already getting
involved. With our 'Jour des Jeux' on September 16, Cross Country running, Junior
soccer, Intermediate Volleyball, Kilean Lodge Helpers, and Lunch Room Monitoring
there are already so many opportunities for our students to feel part of the Central
community.
Our first School Council meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, October 4th. It is
not too late for parents to feel part of the Central community too! All parents are
welcome at each meeting. Meetings are announced in each newsletter and appear
on our website under the Central School Council tab, as well as on our website
calendar. Thank you to the parents who organized the food trucks to be on our
property for the Open House/Meet the Teacher evening. What a fun community event!
Parents, thank you for helping your students get off to a great start for the 2016/2017
school year!
GRADE 8 STUDENTS AND PARENTS: MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Starting high school is a huge step in a
student's life. While it's definitely an exciting
time, it also brings with it many questions,
such as "What's life in high school really like?
What programs and options are available
to help me achieve my goals?"
A great way to have your questions
answered is to attend an open house.
Grade 8 students and their families are
invited to attend High School Open Houses
from November 28 to December 1. The
Open House for Grimsby Secondary School is on Nov. 29th. See you there!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS…
It is now October and our students are in the routine of arriving and
dismissing from the back tarmac area daily. If you bring your child(ren) to
school in the morning, please say goodbye to them at the gate to help
them transition into entering the school yard independently.
School Cash Online...Be sure to scroll down to see all the potential purchases.
NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION...
If your child requires non-prescription medication at school, an Authorization of
Administration of Oral/Topical Medication MUST be completed on an annual basis.
Forms may be obtained from the school office. Please note: students are not to keep
medication in their backpacks or lunch bags. All medication should be given to the
classroom teacher and should be clearly marked with the child’s full name.
PHOTO RETAKE DAY IS OCTOBER 25th
CENTRAL SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING- OCTOBER 4TH AT 6:30 PM IN
THE SCHOOL'S LIBRARY. ALL ARE WELCOME.
OCTOBER IS INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH…
Lace up your shoes or snap on those bike helmets for an active
trip to school.
If you live far from school, park a few blocks away and walk part
of the trip.
If you ride a bus take part by walking to your bus stop.
Tips to remember when walk or biking:
· Look left, right and left again when crossing the street
· Never run or dart out into the street or cross between parked
cars
· Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of
them and watch out for cars that are turning or backing up
· It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no
sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible
· Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
· Watch out for cars coming out of driveways and alleys
· If what you are doing has wheels, protect your brain – always wear a helmet
· When riding your bike, ride in the same direction as the cars are driving

SCHOOL NURSE...The school nurse assigned to our school is Susan Munford. She will be
promoting optimal health among our students and assisting us to develop a healthy
school environment. Her role is to influence Niagara’s children and their families to
make healthy lifestyle choices. Our nurse can be reached at the Niagara Region Public
Health Department at 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7228
HALLOWE’EN HAPPENINGS...
Students are encouraged to wear costumes the afternoon of Monday October 31st
(children must bring their costume in a bag in the morning). Our older students will be
helping our younger students to get into their costumes during 2nd nutrition break. After
attendance is taken at 1:40 pm, the SK to grade 5 students will parade through the
school yard (weather permitting). Students will then take part in fun classroom activities
for the remainder of the afternoon. Other programs will be provided for students who do
not participate in Hallowe’en activities. Our Grade 6-8 students will be invited to our first
Me to We Dance of the year, with DJ J-Me entertaining us as we show our Central
School spirit. The cost of the dance is $3.00 which helps make a donation to Free The
Children. Your support in assisting your child with selecting a creative costume is
appreciated. Weapons or costumes of a violent nature are not permitted as part of our
safe schools policy. We are looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon.

TERRY FOX WALK…
Thank you to our Central families for your generous donations to support our Terry Fox
Walk. We surpassed our Me to We Club goal of $1.00 per student and raised $1024.00
to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation. Our Terry Fox walk, held on Oct. 3, is a great
opportunity for us to work together as Central Stingrays, to show our school spirit and to
remember Terry Fox's accomplishments and celebrate his heroic efforts to conquer
cancer.
FROZEN YOGURT SALES…
Frozen Yogurt Sales continue each Friday at Central school. Frozen Yogurt is $2.00 per
cup and makes a great treat at first break on Fridays. You can purchase a yogurt
punch card through School Cash on line at several times during the year, or you can
purchase frozen yogurt with cash on Fridays. The Frozen yogurt is provided by TCBY and
is peanut free. All proceeds from yogurt sales are collected for charity donations
throughout the year. Last year, our fundraising and frozen yogurt campaigns were so
successful that we were able to make significant donations to Free the Children, The
Terry Fox Run, The Red Cross (in support of Fort McMurray), The Grimsby Benevolent
Fund and The Education Foundation of Niagara.
SOCKS AND SANDALS SPIRIT DAY…
On October 12th, we will be hosting our first Central Stingrays Spirit Day! It is Socks and
Sandals day at Central and we hope to see all of you wearing your special footwear to
celebrate our school spirit.
WE DAY TORONTO…
On October 19th, nine Grade 7 and 8 students from our Me to We Club will be
attending We Day in Toronto this year. They will travel to the ACC to see a spectacular
series of speakers and inspirational leaders talk about how we can Be The Change at
Central this year. They will come back with information about local, national and
worldwide events that we can be part of and ideas about how our Central Me to We
Club can affect positive change in our school and community. We are very proud to
have our students representing our Central Sting Rays at this amazing event.
HALLOWEEN CANDY GRAMS…
Halloween candy grams will be on sale outside the office on October 24th, 25th, and
26th for 25 cents each. They will be packaged up and delivered to the students' classes
by our Me to We Club on Monday, October 31st. If you'd like to send a spooky treat
and a Happy Halloween to a friend at Central School, stop by and pick up a Candy
Gram from your Me to We Club. All proceeds will be added to our Charity Fund and
distributed to various charities throughout the year.
THE GREAT CENTRAL BOOK EXCHANGE…
Do you have any books at home that you have read and enjoyed,
but are no longer interested in? Are they in good condition?
Could another Central student enjoy them? If the answer is yes,
then please consider donating them to the Great Central Book
Exchange this month. On October 13 and 14, you can bring your
books to school and exchange them for a book ticket in your
classroom. Save that book ticket for October 17 when all of our
donated books will be on display and you can choose a book in exchange for your
ticket. Exchanges will happen during both breaks. If there are any books left after the
tickets have been collected, extra books will be for sale at 25 cents each on October
18. Proceeds will be put towards the school musical and Central School's Makerspace.
OCTOBER IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
MONTH…
Students at our school and across the
DSBN will be wearing purple on October
