The wise owl stretched his great wings and yawned. It was a starless night,
perfectly black. But inside the old oak tree, perched on the edge of his cozy den
- its smooth walls lined with his collection of vintage hats - the wise owl could
see the dewy field as clearly as if it were daytime. When the moon came out
from behind a cloud, a small earthworm playing in the mud noticed the wise owl,
and said, “Wise owl, what’s the secret to happiness?” The wise owl thought and
replied, “Hats.” “Oh,” the worm said. “I thought it was mud.” “Of course,” the
wise owl said, “I saved a lot of acorns to afford my wonderful hats. But whether
it’s hats or travel or, I suppose, mud - stay focused on what brings you happiness
and save for it.” “If I saved rainwater,” the worm said, “I could have mud even
on dry days!” “Precisely,” the wise owl said. “Or...you could begin saving for a
beautiful Victorian top hat.”

teach this crucial habit to children? Talk to them about how you save. Take
every opportunity to discuss the importance of money planning. Talk openly
about your own saving success - and failures. Don’t let money be a taboo
subject.
