November 2015
Parent Teacher Conferences~ November 12th
One of the best times of the year is when teachers are able to meet with parents and
share about each student’s growth here at Jefferson. It is an opportunity to focus the entire conversation on your child! A conference allows the teacher(s) the chance to share
examples of your student’s daily work, explain and provide your student’s performance on
formal assessments (tests), celebrate areas of strengths and give focus to any areas of concern. This is also a time when parents are able to share about their child, ask questions
and gain clarity to classroom/building expectations.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are formally scheduled to occur twice a year. However,
anytime you wish to conference with your child’s teacher(s), please call or email your
child’s teacher(s) to schedule a date and time to meet.

First Grade Happenings by Ms. Clements & Mrs. Koenig
Students in Ms. Clements’ and Mrs. Koenig’s classrooms have been busy learning new math concepts. They have learned to solve addition problems through
the strategy of counting on. Math mountains are being used to understand
partners and total. Students are using the math mountains to write the fact
families. Story problems for both addition and subtraction are being solved
and written. We are working hard to become proficient on the partners of
10.
The Pizza Hut Book-It program has begun. Parents be sure to look for and
sign your child’s daily reading log so they earn credit towards each month’s
pizza.
Pumpkin decorating for fall/Halloween will be a fun activity we undertake the

Second Grade Happenings by Mrs. Stibbe
In reading we are starting a unit on nonfiction. Students are noticing
details and putting details together to gain knowledge. They are also learning
about asking questions while they read. In Math we are practicing place value
and working with numbers in the hundreds. In writing we are learning how to
do lab reports along with doing some science experiments involving matter. This goes along with our reading unit of non-fiction books. In science we
are investigating the different animal groups and reading about animal life cycles. We have had a great first quarter!
Third Grade Happenings by Aidan Scholz and Carisa Oman (Ms. Nagel)
We are writing and reading poems. We are learning about line breaks
and looking at things in a new way, using poets’ eyes. We are going to share
our poems at a Classroom Coffeehouse. We will have Poet Punch and eat a
snack. We are learning to type on the computers and write in cursive. So far
we have the letters l, h, and k. We are learning to be thinkers when we read.
In math we are learning multiplication and division. We know that 2x5 means
there are two groups of five. We are learning about classifying with animals.
We are learning what some animals have in common and others do not. We had
a caterpillar named Striper. We studied him every day and each time he was
different. He turned into a chrysalis, then into a Monarch butterfly, and then
we let him go. We have been learning about gerbils and how to take care of
them with our gerbils, Bolt and Ninja. Bolt likes to run a lot, and Ninja is
hyper.

Third Grade Happenings by Mrs. Green
Happy October! With the changing color of the leaves and the brisk fall
weather, our third graders have been as busy as ever! In writing, they have
been studying poetry and creating their own poems. They had a special celebration at the end of the month where their parents came in to hear their poems.
It was a real treat!
Did someone say, “treat?” This past month, one of our third graders was
in for a special experience. Made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, our
own Hayden Burke traveled to Green Bay and got to meet the Green Bay Packers, including Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers!
Last but not least, our third graders have been introduced to two challenging new concepts: multiplication and division! The students enjoy solving
these kinds of problems and practicing their facts. Two, four, six, eight- Jefferson School is really great!
Fourth Grade Happenings by Miss Harrington & Miss Nelson
The Jefferson Elementary fourth graders had a great October! We are
wrapping up end of the quarter assessments. In math we will be finishing up
with one digit by two digit multiplication and two digit by two digit
multiplication. After multiplication we will be moving into long division. In
reading we will be starting to relevel each student for report cards and then
we will be looking at key detail in our stories. Our fictional stories are looking
good! We will be finishing up our stories and moving toward writing opinion
essays. The students have been learning about where to find Wisconsin in the
U.S. and the world. We will be moving into learning about Wisconsin in its
early years. In science, we have finished up our unit on rock and minerals and
will be looking at matter and energy. We are looking forward toward a
terrific November.
Fifth Grade Happenings (Mrs. Schroeder’s Class)
By Briella Hollands
Here at Jefferson Elementary School every Fifth Grader got an iPad. We do
Writing / English, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Math. My favorite part
on the iPad is Math because we can do adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators decimals are next. In Social Studies we are learning the
states and capitals.
For keyboarding we are doing typingweb.com so we learn how to type without
looking at the keyboard. Other great reasons why we have
iPads in the classroom: Apps,
IMPROVED LITERACY and MOBILITY...WE CAN DO SO
MUCH!! I love studying the Solar System for Science because it features 3D graphics and videos. It is worth it to
be in 5th Grade at Jefferson Elementary for so many reasons…but right now it is so rewarding to be able to have
your own iPad in the classroom. We will be ready for
Middle School!!
By Lucas Smyth
What is a lunar eclipse? A lunar eclipse is where the moon
appears darkened as it passes into the Earth’s shadow.
The lunar eclipse happened on September 27th, at
9:07p.m., 2015. A lunar eclipse happens because a lunar
eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra.
This can occur only when the Sun, Earth and the moon are aligned exactly or
very closely with the Earth in the middle. A lunar eclipse is a cool thing, the color of it is red with a little bit of white. The full moon of September 27th and
28th is called a super moon, where the moon will be closest
to the Earth. I learned a lot of things about the lunar
eclipse and things I did not even know. But a lunar eclipse is
a cool thing, and it happened last month!! I got some pictures of the lunar eclipse. They were awesome. That’s what
I learned about the lunar eclipse. What did you learn from
my story?
~Penny Wars ~
Wisconsin’s Make a Wish Foundation
Congratulations Jefferson students for raising $746.21 for the Make a Wish
Foundation in our Penny Wars. Your help will allow another child to have their dream
come true! Here are the standings for the Penny Wars:
In 3rd place, Mrs. Clements class had 3288 pennies
In 2nd place, Ms. Nelson’s class had 3394 pennies
In 1st place, Mrs. Green’s class had 3623 pennies
Mrs. Green’s class brought 7035 pennies in total!!
We also received an anonymous donation of $200 to add to our total, so we will be
giving the Make a Wish Foundation $946.21. Thank you to all that brought in change
and be proud of the good that you have done for others!
Title I Reading News
What is a Fluent Reader?
~Ms. Siegenthaler, Title I Reading Teacher~
Quite often we hear the words “fluent reader” but sometimes it is perceived by others
as only the pace or speed of reading written text. However, there is much more to fluency than how fast one reads written text. Fluency is crucial in order to become a proficient reader who conveys meaning from text. Reading is thinking! The more fluent
a reader is then the better they are able to connect to the text and comprehend what he/
she has read.
Fluency includes three skills. A fluent reader is accurate. He/she uses various reading
strategies to figure out unknown words. A fluent reader changes their voice when
needed to sound like the character, pays attention to punctuation marks such as an exclamation point to show excitement in their voice, pauses at periods, and pauses at
commas. A fluent reader reads at a nice pace which is not too fast or too slow. It is
when these three skills are put into “action” that a reader is fluent. A fluent reader is
able to comprehend and gain meaning from written text.
In my 2nd-5th reading classes, we have been playing a game titled “American Idol Fluency” in which the student reads a reading passage and the other students are the judges. They determine how fluent the reader was based on a 1, 2, or 3 scoring in which 1
is the lowest and 3 is the highest score. The judges are required to explain “why” he/
she gave them the score, what the reader did well, and suggestions on how they can
improve. The students seem to be grasping the idea of exactly what a fluent reader is
and have enjoyed the game! I have sent a set of the three cards home in the student’s
reading bags so they can practice at home with family or friends.
