FORTY-NINTH CONVOCATION 2013 Thunder Bay Campus Lakehead University Convocation 2013 Lakehead University’s forty-ninth convocation for the conferring of degrees and diplomas is being celebrated on Friday, May 31, 2013 and Saturday, June 1, 2013 at our Thunder Bay campus and Saturday, June 8, 2013 at our Orillia campus. The word “convocation” means “calling together.” It is a ceremonial meeting of the entire University community. On Convocation Day, University members and their guests wear special attire based on a tradition that dates back as long as seven centuries ago. The academic costume, also referred to as academic “dress” or “regalia,” had its origins in the medieval European universities. The regalia were devised to distinguish academic persons as doctors, licentiates, masters, and bachelors. In the middle ages they were worn as everyday attire. Gowns were a necessity because of unheated buildings, and hoods were needed to cover the heads of medieval scholars. There are many variations of academic dress. The hood, gown, and in some cases the special hat worn by an individual are determined by the style of the university where he or she receives a degree. The colourful gowns and hoods of the universities from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other nations of the world are worn at Lakehead University today. The academic dress chosen by Lakehead University is fashioned after that of the University of Oxford, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. The robes worn by the officers of the University - the Chancellor, who presides at convocation, the President (who is also the Vice-Chancellor) and the Chair of the Board of Governors - are all of the Oxford cut and trim. Each has its own distinctive colour. The colourful gowns worn by the individuals who are receiving honorary degrees are of the same design as are the black gowns worn by the student candidates. The ritual at convocation reflects the medieval custom that anyone in a university could wear a gown, but a hood was the symbol of a degree. Students who have met the University’s academic requirements (three, four, five, six or seven years of study in particular subjects) wear the symbol of their status as holders of a Lakehead University degree. Lakehead University’s bachelor’s and master’s degree hoods are distinguished by a one or two inch colour border which indicates the degree acquired, e.g. white for Arts, gold for Science, blue for Education, burgundy for Nursing, etc. Lakehead’s first PhD degree was conferred in 1998. In addition to “earned” degrees, the University confers “honorary” degrees which symbolize the highest honour that can be conferred on an individual by the University. An honorary degree may be awarded in recognition of scholarly or creative achievements or distinguished public service to the country or region. They go to individuals who have been designated by the University’s Senate, its senior academic governing body, as deserving special honour. At convocation the degree is awarded honoris causa, or “for the sake of honour.” A hood is also given to the recipient and it may be worn to any academic affair. Recipients of these degrees become honorary alumni of the University and they may affix, after their names, the abbreviation of the degree. The Doctor of Science, Doctor of Laws, and Doctor of Humane Letters, will be conferred this year. The Board of Governors of the University also recognizes individuals who have contributed to the growth, development, welfare, and well-being of Northwestern Ontario, Simcoe County and of Lakehead University. This is done by the conferring of the title Fellow of the University. You will recognize University Fellows by their familiar blue gown with white velvet epitoge or scarf. During the processional and the recessional the Marshal for convocation carries the Mace, a silver wand which is a traditional symbol of the University’s authority. This mace was given to the University by the Alumni Association in 1971. It bears the University’s motto Ad augusta per angusta, Achievement through Effort. As Lakehead University celebrates its forty-ninth convocation with students, parents, friends and community, it is worthwhile to remember that convocation participants dress in clothes that are symbolic, not functional. They go through a centuries-old ritual for the conferment of degrees and diplomas - a milestone in the lives of our graduates. We thank you for being present to share this special event with us. Photographs - Those wishing to take pictures of the graduates are most welcome to come forward to the left or right of the stage. To avoid congestion of these areas, please wait until your particular graduate is ready to cross the stage before you come forward. Dr. Stevenson is a member of the Advisory Council of Fulbright Canada’s Network on North American Studies in Canada (NNASC) and the Editorial Board of Foreign Affairs (Latinoamérica). In addition to being a professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at Lakehead University, he currently serves as vice-chair of the Board of Directors for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). Dr. Stevenson is also a community member of Thunder Bay’s Community Economic Development Commission. 5 Dr. Dermot McLoughlin DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Dr. Dermot McLoughlin has studied and worked all over the world, including Ireland, Scotland, Africa, and Canada, where he currently makes his home. Even towards the end of his medical career, as he claims he is, Dr. McLoughlin is a busy man with an impressive résumé. He is not only an associate clinical professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine but was also a founding member of the School’s Board of Directors. He is currently the active staff radiologist at the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre, as well as the academic director for the Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Basic Radiological Technicians Training Certificate Program. In 1958, Dr. McLoughlin earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the National University in Ireland. After graduating, he did his residency year at Dublin’s Mater Hospital, followed by three months as a casualty officer at St. Michael’s Hospital and six as an intern at Sick Children’s Hospital, both in Dublin. From 1963 until 1966, he served as resident in radiology at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland. During this time, he also received a diploma in Medical RadioDiagnosis from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in London, England. In Canada, where in 1974 he earned his Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians, Dr. McLoughlin has worked as a radiologist in several Ontario cities, including Toronto, Barrie, Hamilton, Moose Factory, and Sioux Lookout. Dr. McLoughlin resides in Sioux Lookout, where he has worked at the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre since 2003. 6 The Right Honourable Paul Martin DOCTOR OF LAWS In 2003, The Right Honourable Paul Martin became Canada’s 21st prime minister, remaining so until 2006. While this accomplishment is impressive in itself, it is easy to forget that a prime minister leads a life of achievement before being sworn into office and after his or her term ends. Mr. Martin is no exception. Mr. Martin is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s St. Michael’s College, where he received an Honours degree in History and Philosophy. He also attended U of T’s Law School and was called to the bar in 1966. Around this same time, in 1965, he married Sheila Ann Cowan. In 1981, prior to his entry into the political arena, Mr. Martin acquired the world’s largest fleet of selfunloading vessels and offshore transhippers, The CSL Group Inc. This move was considered the most significant buyout in Canada at the time. Mr. Martin became Canada’s minister of finance in 1993 and maintained that position until 2002. He was responsible for lifting the country’s 25-year deficit, as well as virtually all of Canada’s foreign debt, both of which had reached record highs. If this wasn’t enough, he went on to achieve five consecutive budget surpluses and restored the financial integrity of the Canada Pension Plan. Under his leadership, regulations governing the country’s financial institutions were strengthened, which gained Canada international attention as a model for sound financial regulation. In addition, 1999 saw Mr. Martin named inaugural chair of the finance ministers and central bank governors new Group of Twenty (G-20). The Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative was the former prime minister’s brain child and aimed to see the high school drop-out rate of Aboriginal youth in Canada decline. As well, Mr. Martin and his son, David, founded the Capital for Aboriginal Prosperity and Entrepreneurship Fund, which supports growth in Aboriginal businesses, both on and off reserves. If prime ministers are supposed to “retire” after leaving office, The Right Honourable Paul Martin may not know the meaning of the word. These days, he can be found chairing the British-Norwegian poverty and sustainable development fund for the ten-nation Congo Basin Rainforest. The fund was previously cochaired by the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Wangari Maathai, and is worth $200 million. Mr. Martin and his wife Sheila have three sons, Paul, Jamie, and David, and three grandsons, Ethan, Liam, and Finn. 7 John Mason DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Since earning an Honours Bachelor of Science in 1975, John Mason has carried his Geology degree from Lakehead University far. His main interests, professionally and academically, are mineral deposits and Precambrian geology, for which he proudly credits Lakehead’s Geology Department and its solid curriculum. Mr. Mason served for 36 years as regional manager of the Resident Geologists Program at the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines with the goal, among others, of attracting new exploration investment to Northwestern Ontario. Today he works with the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission where he holds the title of project manager, mining services. His focus is on mineral exploration and mining in Northwestern Ontario, with an aim to capitalize on business, job, and economic development opportunities in this region. Outside the office, Mr. Mason’s résumé is just as impressive. He belongs to the Northwestern Ontario Prospectors Association, the Ontario Prospectors Association, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, and the Association of Mineral Exploration British Columbia. He is a registered professional geoscientist in the province of Ontario. As well, he chairs the Mining and Exploration Sub-Committee at Lakehead University and is a member of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Exceptional Cancer Care Fundraising Committee. An elder at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, he is the chair of a Mission and Outreach Committee which provides financial support for water well drilling by Lifewater Incorporated in impoverished countries, such as Haiti, Liberia, and Kenya. In 2012, Mr. Mason was presented the Ontario Prospectors Award. In the same year, along with colleague Steve Demmings, he received the North American Infrastructure Strategic Project Award and the Job Creation Award, the latter while attending the American Infrastructure Leadership Forum in Denver, Colorado. He is a confident promoter of the wealth and potential of minerals in Northwestern Ontario and firmly believes the mineral sector can be utilized to improve the quality of life for its residents. Lakehead University is not only John Mason’s alma mater but is also where he met his wife Barbara, who attained a BA here in 1974 and an Honours Bachelor of Social Work in 1976, and with whom he celebrates 38 years of marriage and two sons, Andrew and Michael. This year Michael will receive his degree in Medicine from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. 8 Arnold Park Dolores Wawia ALUMNI HONOUR AWARD ALUMNI HONOUR AWARD Mr. Arnold Park (BA, Grad Dip Bus, MBA), is the former president and CEO of McCain Foods (Canada), and has led a stellar career in the food industry. He also skis, swims, and runs a hobby farm where he raises cattle and horses. In addition, Park serves on the Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board and the Board of Directors of Infoway Health Canada, while still having children at home – three daughters, ages 15, 13, and 9, who were adopted from China as infants. Mr. Arnold Park has the highest regard for Lakehead, and is grateful that he was given a chance to pursue his academic interests. He entered Lakehead as a mature student and did well in both his undergraduate and graduate programs. He has a fond association with Thunder Bay and returns at least once a year. Dolores Wawia (BA, BEd, MEd) is a celebrated innovator in Aboriginal education. Born in Beardmore, Ontario, and the eldest of 12 children, she grew up in Gull Bay First Nation on Lake Nipigon’s shores. She had tuberculosis as a child and was sent to the Fort William Sanatorium in what is now Thunder Bay. Upon recovery, she went to St. Joseph’s Residential School and then attended high school locally. With no plans for a future education or career, Wawia went home, married, and raised a family. When the marriage failed, she completed her high school diploma and enrolled in the Lakehead Teachers’ College. After graduating in 1969, she taught in southern Ontario. In 1974, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University, becoming one of the first Aboriginal women from Northwestern Ontario to do so. Wawia returned to Gull Bay to teach and later accepted a position with Lakehead University to develop and teach innovative Aboriginal education courses. “I wanted to meet the needs of Native children because 97% of them dropped out by Grade 10,” explains Wawia. She was also a teacher counselor with Lakehead’s Native Teacher Education Program from 1975-84. While working full-time and raising three teenagers, Wawia earned her bachelor and master of education degrees from Lakehead in 1982-83, becoming a tenured faculty member in 1989. She was McMaster University’s Coordinator of Indigenous Studies from 1993-96. She currently teaches at Lakehead University and is co-chair of the Lakehead Board of Education’s Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee. She is also passionate about collecting frogs, an appropriate hobby for a woman whose Aboriginal name, Muk-Kee-Queh, means Frog Lady. Lakehead declared her Elder-in-Residence in 2003 and in 2005 Wawia was chosen as one of Lakehead’s 40 Northern Lights during the University’s 40th anniversary celebrations. She received the Seven Generations Achievement Award in 2007. Now, Professor Wawia is receiving an Alumni Honour Award for her unfailing devotion to Aboriginal education. 9 Mehdi Dashtban Deanna Burgart YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD Mehdi Dashtban (PhD) was born in Tehran, Iran, and earned a BSc in 1999 and an MSc in 2001 from Tehran University in cellular and molecular biology. Lorne *FIRST CLASS STANDING The Mace The mace, originally a mediaeval weapon of offense in the form of a club, weighted heavily at one end, and usually made of iron, steel or brass, was designed to break through the heaviest armour. Bishops carried maces in battle, rather than swords, in order to conform to the canonical rule which forbade priests to shed blood. The earliest ceremonial maces were carried by royal body guards known as serjeants-at-arms in formal processions of the courts of Phillip II of France, and probably Richard I of England. However, the practical purpose of discouraging attacks upon the king gradually gave way to the European love of ceremony, and as early as the 14th century maces tended to be more decorative and symbolic. The mace has thus come to represent the authority of the body or institution which possesses it. In Canada’s Parliament, for example, a mace is carried into the House at the beginning of each session by the sergeant-at-arms. Similarly, at many Canadian universities, a mace is present at ceremonial functions to represent the ongoing authority, dignity and spirit of the university. The official mace of Lakehead University, a gift of the Alumni Association, was designed by Ken Campbell of the Board of Education and constructed by John Butler, Senior Technician in the University’s Science Workshop. In keeping with the responsibilities of Lakehead University, the new mace is made entirely of materials from the region of Northwestern Ontario. The head consists of a golden cluster of jack pine cones on a smooth silver hemisphere. It is surrounded by two nickel-silver rings on either side of a band of polished nickel inscribed with official insignia of Lakehead University. The base of the head is comprised of four triangular specimens of ore mined in the region: silver, gold, nickel and copper. Below the ores is a handle of silver which leads into a shaft of stainless steel surrounded by fluted bronze. Upon a narrow insert of silver is inscribed the motto of the University. The shaft ends in a boss of nickel-silver with an insert of local amethyst crystal. Each section of the shaft is separated by a small silver ring. The mace was used for the first time in the Convocation ceremonies, Saturday, May 27, 1972. Lakehead University The Arms of the University were granted by the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk, on June 20, 1959 The heraldic description is: Coat of Arms “Barry wavy of six Argent and Azure on a Chief Gules in front of a rising Sun issuant from the base of the Chief Or between two Candles enflamed proper each surmounted of an open Book also proper edged and bound Gold a Portcullis chained Sable” Crest “On a Wreath Or and Azure on Water Barry wavy Argent and Azure in front of a Rock growing therefrom a Pine Tree a Canoe paddled by an Indian Brave and Canadian Trapper.” Motto Ad augusta per angusta Achievement through effort 955 Oliver Road Thunder Bay, ON, P7B 5E1 www.lakeheadu.ca 500 University Avenue Orillia, ON, L3V OB9 http://orillia.lakeheadu.ca
