UNIT 1: UNDERSTANDING & PRODUCING NON-FICTION TEXTS HIGHER TIER – WRITING TO ARGUE OR PERSUADE Q6. Your school or college is inviting entries for a writing competition. The topic is “Dangerous sports activities and pastimes are selfish, often put others at risk and should be discouraged.” (24 marks) Candidate 1: Dear Teacher/pupils, What has our school become into there are now several things we can’t do at school. We can’t argue our side of the point the teacher don’t want to hear what you have to say. Everyone should look the same and you must obey these rules other you will face the consequence of being send to the head of year office. Anyway enough of that nonsence, they are trying to get rid of your sporting abilities for most of us our livelyhood. What do they think they will be able to be achieve by this. Dangerous sports activities come under the section of rugby. However rugby is an important activity for growing lads such as myself and being able to learn how to effectively tackle somebody to the ground and in my opinion should be highly recommended in all schools over Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Rugby is a way of protecting yourself by using your upper body strength to push people off you. I thank to ‘god’ that hopefully this has never happened to anyone reading this but it has been known all over the globe and I maybe if children know how to protect themselves the percentage of GBH. child murders will decrease. Meanwhile teaching rugby to a small group of children can be abit too much and some might take it over the top and go flying into tackles from all different positions. this may cause major injures to the upper body not expecting anything. The force which is generate from someone diving it to someone is high and can often injure somebody if they land wrong on twist a part of their body in a tackle. In addition to this many injuries are caused by playing sport in the cold and hard weather as the studs don’t grip into the ground causing you to fall over and maybe twist something in their landing. ______________________________________________________________________________ Candidate 2: Plan. Own choice Thrill seeking Need to be as safe as possible Need to think of others Conclusion. Is there anything better than that feeling of pure adrenaline? Your heart is racing, your blood is pumping, your senses are alive …But is that worth putting yourself and others in danger? It’s people’s personal choice to take part in dangerous sports, no one forces them to do it. They do it because it is something they love doing. Surely, it wouldn’t be fair to stop people doing something they love. Moreover, many things can be dangerous. People could die on the way to tesco but no one is going to ban Tesco. Dangerous sports offer a thrill that is absent from everyday life and that people need to feel. It can stop people from turning to illegal substances for this excitement they need. Also dangerous sports can help you feel less stressed about the pressures of life. However, people participating in dangerous sports need to be aware of just how deadly they can be. Participants of these sports need to act sensibly and responsibly and take every safety precaution. In addition to this, it is not fair for rescue workers to give up their lives trying to save people who got into difficulty while participating in a dangerous sport but, overall I think dangerous sports should be allowed. In conclusion, it is people’s personal choice to participate in dangerous sports and therefore it should not be discouraged. However, people need to take every precaution to ensure they stay as safe as possible. They need to be aware that it is not only their life but also the life of the rescue workers, they are endangering. Candidate 3: Extreme sports is the definition for a decidedly dangerous, fast-paced sport; with the extremities of this activity heightened to provide maximum enjoyment. In an ‘Extreme Sport´ people jump off cliffs, down cliffs, out of aeroplanes without or without a bungee jump rope attached – all volountarily! Why? To experience something. To feel adrelanine pumping round their body, or to feel weightless and powerful. So afterwards they can try and fail to describe how brilliant it was. Yes it is dangerous and sometimes people can yet hurt, but if, in the words of Cheryl Cole, ‘it’s worth having, it’s worth fighting for,’! Taking a risk is half the whole experience of the event – feeling like your life is in someone elses hands, or that your body is at the mercy at nature – this completes the memory of it all. Admittedly that is why it is extreme sports but it’s absurt that its ‘dangerous to the people around you.’ It’s your choice whether you want to do it. Your choice whether you want to do it. Your choice whether you want to jump. Your choice completely, no-one elses. If you want to do it, do it. Don’t hide away for the rest of your life saying I’ll do it tomorrow – opportunities are given to you for a reason. Extreme sports, can keep you in an extreme healthy state as well. By pushing your body to the limits, rest of your life saying I’ll do it tomorrow – opportunities are given to you for a reason. Extreme sports, can keep you in an extreme healthy state as well. By pushing your body to the limits, you can gain muscles you never thought were there. Of course you have to train to certain extent for most or all extreme sports, but that is not unexpected of course. Also you’ll need a good dose of common sense and a drive to do it – relatively in equal amounts most people think. 70% percent of people that take part in extreme sports are more likely to live longer. 70%! Does anyone not want to extreme sports now? If you take all these points into consideration, the fact that some people vehemently discourage these activities from taking place seems almost stupid. Obviously, family or friends might have the right to be worried for your safety, but even they don’t have the right to choose what you do and don’t do! (taking into account that nearly all extreme sports do not permit people under 18, so you know if you’re under 18 I’m not talking about you unfortunately.) The origin of the term ‘Extreme Sports’ was first used by Ben Richardson an adrenalin junkie in his late 20s who jumped off a cliff without a parachute into the sea below. This radical action started the revolution that drove sport as a culture to find new ways to reach new goals. Ben Richardson was quoted in so many newspapers there was enough to create a 500 page book, but his famous line is still used today. “Take life as your own, it was “given to you for a reason.”
