LEADERSHIP MODELS ACTIVITY
For this discussion, it is useful to enlarge the Leadership Model worksheets to poster size – or
prepare a set of hand-outs for your students.
Encourage your students to think of examples of each type of leadership. Do these models represent
ALL types of leadership? Could you develop more models of leadership?
Visionary Leadership
Starting with an idea, the leader works to realize his or her vision. He or she may have
to develop support networks, or take on training, in order to achieve the goal. Leadership
is a BY-PRODUCT of the vision. Examples of visionary leaders include people who start
social enterprises, like Anita Roddick of the Body Shop.
LEADERSHIP
We discussed four different models of Leadership as a way of engaging students in the idea that
there are different types of leadership.
Situational Leadership
A particular situation demands leadership, and a person steps forward to take charge.
Leadership is a RESULT of a situation. Examples include the person who leads other people
to safety in an emergency.
Aspirational Leadership
A person desires to be a leader and then finds the education, experience and position to
be a leader. Leadership is a GOAL. Examples include politicians who enter the government
with the goal of becoming leaders.
Egotistical Leadership
Keep the Leadership Models posted for the “Walk in Winston Churchill’s Shoes” Exercise

RESOURCES
A person desires to be seen as a leader, does everything to be in a position to influence
other people, and then does anything to stay in that position. The PERCEPTION of leadership

Did You Know?
Who Was Winston Churchill?
Winston Churchill smoked his first cigar in Cuba
in 1895.
WINSTON
CHURCHILL
He loved singing but hated whistling.
He was hit by a car in New York City in 1931.
His
favourite subject in school was History.
He died exactly 90 years after his father.
Fact File
He almost drowned in
Lake Lausanne, in Switzerland in 1895.
He failed his entrance
exams to Sandhurst twice –
but passed on his third attempt.
Here’s some information
about Winston Churchill.
Winston Churchill was Prime Minister of Britain during World
War II ( 1940 to 1945 ). He was a cantankerous politician,
who took a stand, inspired hope among the people, and when
confronted with the threat of devastation, led Britain to victory.
Winston Churchill was a man of contradictions: A guy with
a lisp and a stammer who became one of history’s best speakers.
A man who had bouts of depression, yet inspired millions. A
poor student who didn’t attend university, but who won the
Nobel Prize for Literature. A leader who’d made plenty of
mistakes, but in whom the people placed their faith and their
lives.
Many people say that Winston Churchill was the greatest
Briton ever. They say he
was an extraordinary man
in extraordinary times –
and perhaps this is true.
But
He was the first honorary citizen of the USA.
He took a nap every
day and often worked from bed.
He was a qualified bricklayer.
9. It’s 1915. Your country is at war, and you are a member of
the Council of War. Your big idea is to send troops into Turkey
to capture part of the country and force Turkey out of the
War. If the plan succeeds, it will help win the war. You send
troops in, and thousands of soldiers are killed. A military
disaster. What would you do? What qualities of leadership are
required?
Winston Churchill
painted over 500
paintings in his life!
10. It’s 1933. You recognise the
threat which Adolf Hitler poses
to world peace, and you speak
against Germany’s growing
military strength. Nobody wants
to hear your speeches, but you
believe that Britain needs to
prepare for War. What would
you do? What qualities of
leadership are required?
