Huncoat Village can trace it’s origins back to the survey of England produced by William The Conqueror in 1086 that became known as the Domesday Book , when it was just a small hamlet with scattering of farms and cottages. The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin where Hun, or Hunna was a family name and Cotte is an Old English name for a shelter for small animals. Early settlement seems most likely to have been during Saxon times when East Lancashire formed part of Northumbria under King Oswald (700 AD). It was a sparsely populated area of peatmoss and woodland, the haunt of wild boar and wolves. The area is renown for Accrington Bricks called ‘NORI’, iron named backwards. Accrington bricks, or NORIs were a type of iron hard engineering brick, produced in Huncoat, Accrington, Lancashire, England from 1887 to 2008. They were famed for their strength, and were used for the foundations of the Blackpool Tower and the Empire State Building. NORI was first produced at a brickworks adjacent to the quarry in Whinney Hill, Huncoat by the Accrington Brick and Tile Company Ltd. The clay there produced bricks of the highest strength and hardness. These bricks were acid resistant, so could be used for the lining of flues and chimneys. There were four brickyards, producing engineering bricks (Enfields, Whinney Hills) and specials. Specials were hand thrown into plaster of paris moulds. They could be extremely decorative. These bricks were used for specialised engineering projects such as in furnaces and for powerstations. The site had its own branch railway joining the East Lancashire Line at Huncoat Station, and was close to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The area consists of plenty of open spaces such as The Coppice and Peel park, heritage from the past in the form of Arden Hall, Huncoat train station, old quarries, brickworks and collierys, whilst providing the present with the regeneration of Within Grove, new housing developments (Bluebell Way) and Accrington Cemetary. The ward has two district councillors Dave Parkins (Independent) and Bernard Dawson (Labour).
