It’s Electric! We all know that Benjamin Franklin did not invent electricity, but he was one of the first to discover many things about it and concluded a great many ideals through his infamous kite experiment. “Before Franklin started his scientific experimentation, it was discovered that electricity consisted of two opposing forces. Franklin showed that electricity consisted of a ‘common element’ which he named ‘electric fire.’ Further, electricity was ‘fluid’ like a liquid. It passed through one body to another—however it was never destroyed. In a letter to [his friend in London] Peter Collison, Franklin wrote that the ‘fire only circulates. Hence have arisen some new items among us…’” (ushistory.org). Electricity is essential today! Our cities consume huge amounts of energy and we would be in great distress if we were to live without it for any extended period of time. Every electrical device contains everything it needs to operate—everything except the power. We have to plug it in to an electrical current in order for it to be useful . How similar is electricity to the power of God? How desperately do people need to plug in to His mighty power in order to function moment after moment? And like an electrical current, our Savior could not be destroyed. The power of our resurrected Savior is power over death and freely flows from Jesus into you and me. “And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power” (1 Corinthians 6:14). Benjamin Franklin, inventor of many things and genius behind the study of early electricity, wasn’t noted to be a follower of Christ, but he still acknowledged the power of the resurrection. He wrote his own epitaph, which read, “The body of B. Franklin: Printer; like the cover of an old book, its contents torn out and stript of its lettering and gilding, lies here, food for worms. But the work shall not be wholly lost: for it will, as he believ’d, appear once more in a new and more perfect edition, corrected and amended by the Author.” (ushistory.org). The resurrected Savior that we worship today has the willing ability to make us brand new today, where we are and also in heaven. All we need to do is plug into His power.
