A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. Stay in the right lane and exit for Highway 501 North (to Conway). Follow the directions below for Highway 17 the remainder of the way. From I-95: From the South, take Highway 327 exit to SC Hwy. 76/301 Turn left onto Hwy. 76/301. This will become Hwy. 576 and then Hwy. 501. After passing through Conway, turn right at the second stop light (approx. 2 miles) into the entrance of Coastal Carolina University. You are now on College Road. Kimbel Arena (basketball/volleyball), Charles L. Watson Baseball Stadium, and the Football Stadium are visible on the right from College Road. To get to the Softball Field or the Track & Field Complex, turn right onto Chanticleer Drive after passing Kimbel Arena but before getting to the Baseball Stadium. From the North, take the "South of the Border" exit (IMPOSSIBLE to miss). Follow signs to Myrtle Beach and this will lead you to Highway 501. Then follow the directions above. From Highway 17: Follow Highway 17 Bypass to Highway 501 (Conway exit). At this point, you are approx. eight miles from campus. You will pass the stoplight at Conway Hospital and then pass a Food Lion shopping center (on left). PRESS CREDENTIALS Requests for working press space should be made in writing at least one week before the date of the home contest to the Coastal Carolina Athletic Media Relations Office. The request should be made by the sports director of the newspaper, magazine, radio or television outlet wishing to send a reporter(s) to the game. Outlets that have made proper credential requests are entitled to receive copies of the final game statistics, play-by-play and a scoring summary, as well as any press information provided by the competing institutions. Confirmation of the request will be made by CCU Athletic Media Relations personnel. Press credentials WILL NOT be issued to spouses, friends or children. A press pass to the game will allow a space in the parking lots by the Athletic Administration Building. If a press pass is left at the will call window, or if a member of the media does not have a season press pass, parking arrangements are the responsibility of the media member. PHOTOGRAPHERS Photographers are issued similar credentials to press box media. Photographers are allowed to shoot from outside the 25-yard line on each side of the field and outside the dotted line surrounding the field. MEDIA INFORMATION The Coastal Carolina Athletic Media Relations staff will provide game programs, flip cards, game notes and cumulative statistics for both teams to credentialed media prior to all games. Statistical summaries and play-by-play sheets will be distributed throughout the game and will be available at the conclusion of the contest. Two telephones are available to the media on a first-come, first-served basis. INTERVIEW POLICY (GAME DAY) The postgame interview will be conducted in the Media Room in the Visitors’ Lockerroom at the sound end of the home side at Chanticleer Stadium. Both head coaches will be available to the media after a 10-minute cooling-off period. Individual players may be available for interviews at the conclusion of the game. Should more lines be needed, please contact John Martin for arrangements. 2003 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL M EDIA GUIDE 5 Anticipation. Excitement. Anxiousness. Questions. All words that refer to the first-ever season of collegiate football at Coastal Carolina University. As the date for Coastal Carolina's first college football game on September 6 approaches, Head Coach David Bennett is excited about what has happened so far and even more anxious about what lies ahead for the first football team at CCU. “It’s drawing very close,” Bennett said. “It’s very exciting to see things like the stadium, the lights, and the goal posts going up, and our team will be as young and exciting as that stadium. We are going to make some mistakes early, because we are so young, but our hope is that our kids will play their hearts out every game. And if we have a chance to win each game, we will be way ahead as a program. “We, as coaches, are like everybody else,” he continued. “We can’t wait to go out there and see how our guys respond to playing someone else other than ourselves. We just hope everyone will be patient, including ourselves as coaches, because it is hard to realize that we are a freshman-laden team with a sprinkle of upperclassmen. We are going to learn together, but the great thing is that these guys are going to learn by playing. They aren’t going to learn just on the practice field, but also on the game field and that can be a great advantage.” There have been numerous challenges to reach this point of putting the team on the field for its first season. Not only did Bennett have to put together a coaching staff and a schedule, he had to build a team from the ground up. The coaching staff put together a pair of recruiting classes, but then spent an entire year practicing without a game, many of those practices occuring off campus while the facilities have been under construction for use this fall. But it has been a learning experience that the staff has used to its benefit. “We have been positive with our kids about everything that has occurred so far,” the eighth-year head coach stated. “We remind them that they are making memories that will last forever, whether it was practicing at Carolina Forest, Myrtle Beach, the Conway Recreation Center, Socastee or a driving range, which was pretty neat. Once the practice field and stadium are done, the kids who were with us this first year will be the only ones with those special memories. The team has gone through a lot of adversity and grown together already to get this far, and it will only make them stronger and appreciate what we have in the future. I think that this team, in the games to come and years to come, will be more successful for it.” However, all the practice that Coastal has had during the 200203 school year can only prepare them so much for competition on the field. The philosophy will change when the first game rolls around, as the coaches will have an opponent to focus on with the squad. “We are probably the youngest football team in America,” Bennett said. “When you look at our depth chart, you are going to see a lot of freshmen. But the great thing about that is that they will be learning on the playing field and we will get to utilize that experience as they will be with us for quite a while in building this program. “All we can ask of our young men is to get better each and every day and every week,” he continued. “We want them to compete hard and play fair on the field and work hard in the classroom and community to make a difference. I think if we do those things, we will get this program where we need to be. My son Jeb asked me how many games we were going to win this year and I told him that I honestly have no clue. We will just have to compete every week and see how we develop as a team throughout the season.” Through his years of coaching, Bennett has developed his own style of coaching and team, both on and off the field. Not only does he look to have a team that is successful on the field, but also a contributor to the surrounding community. That philosophy has been adopted with the program at Coastal and, in his opinion, only enhances the experience for the student-athletes. “In our priorities as a program, football is not at the top of the list,” Bennett stated. “We want our young men to grow as individuals and become better people. Part of that comes through the volunteer activities that we have our student-athletes participate in. I don’t know how many will become All-Americans or how many games we will 6 win, but they will leave our program as better people, knowing how to help others.” The team will have almost a month of preparation before its first game, but the coaches know the biggest growth will come from each week’s games. What the staff is working towards is the entire team working as one unit and developing as a group towards the common goal - winning football games. “We are hoping that all three phases – offense, defense and special teams – will come together at the same pace and make us better each week,” Bennett said. “It was impressive to us, as a coaching staff, that we had no turnovers and no injuries in our spring game. That’s very unusual to have no turnovers in a game, especially with a young squad, but it was definitely encouraging to our entire staff. That could be a key for us to have a chance to win games this fall if we can take care of the football and stay healthy. “I think that will be very exciting in the fall when we combine the returners with the incoming freshmen,” Bennett continued. “While we are going to be playing with only two signing classes, I think it will make these guys grow together and have a special bond. Our coaches believe that they will play hard every down and be something that the fans and supporters of Coastal Carolina can be proud of.” With that in mind, let's look at the three phases of Coastal's inaugural football squad. OFFENSE The offense showed some signs of life in the first annual TealWhite game, scoring 35 points in the shortened game. As encouraging as that was, Bennett and offensive coordinator Jamie Snider know that things will change when the Chants prepare to take on their opponents during the season. “Offensively, we will utilize multiple formations, but we aren’t going to be able to be too wide open in the beginning,” Bennett stated. “That can only happen through experience, and we just don’t have that yet. We have to be careful, as a coaching staff, and pick a few things and do those very well in the early stages and build from there. It is kind of like building a house for us. You have to build a strong foundation and go up from there and that is what we are doing with this team and this program. We hope everyone, including our coaches, will be patient in this process, as it gives us the best chance, now and in the future, to win.” The most prominent spot on the field is the quarterback position. Tyler Thigpen and Scott Crouch both were prominent in the TealWhite Game and are among the leading candidates at the position heading into the fall. However, newcomer Ren McKinnon will be part of a group battling for that starting role. “I think we will have great competition in the fall for the starting quarterback job, and that is a better source of motivation for players than coaching,” Bennett said. “There are several that were with us last year, along with an incoming freshman, that will be challenging for that role, so we expect it to be a fierce battle.” Aundres Perkins was one of the most talked about players at the spring game, posting over 100 yards of combined offense in the shortened game. But he isn't the only player that the coaches believe can get the job done for the Chants this fall. “Aundres Perkins is a special young man that has been blessed with a lot of talent to go with the prototypical physical stature he has,” Bennett commented. “He has continued to work hard, as he has learned that the step from high school to college takes a lot of effort. We know he will continue to do that and become faster and stronger and could eventually be a great one. However, he has competition as well, as Patrick Hall, while not as tall and as big, has shown he can get it done, as he was the top running back at times in the spring. Eshoun Talley showed good ability in the spring as well, so we could have some good depth at the running back position.” In utilizing multiple formations, the coaches rely on the fullback to do many things for the offense. Not only do the coaches look for someone who can run and pass block, but also run with and catch the ball out of the backfield. Bennett believes he has people who can fill that role next season and for several years to come. 2003 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL M EDIA GUIDE “Ben Hampton grew as a player and as a person in the past year, as he has quite a bit of talent,” Bennett stated. “He also has people who will continue to push him, like Josh Nicholson and Breon Lee, as he brings good things to the table. Add incoming freshmen Brandon Fisher and Demetrius Morant to the mix, and there are a lot of possibilities in the backfield for us in the fall.” The receivers also are a group that showed some skill in the Teal-White game this past spring. The group caught 21 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns in the abbreviated contest, including three of more than 40 yards. With that speed in house, the coaches have added some height in the 2003 recruiting class to make this a dangerous corps that can impact the game at a moment’s notice. “Our wide receivers are a varied bunch, in terms of size, but they know what it takes to get it done,” Bennett said. “We have a lot of guys who have grown and developed and we hope will continue that path in the fall. Darnell Williams has the heart of a 6-10 guy playing wideout, and Perry Parks and Chris McDonald are also cut from the same mold, playing with a lot of heart and character every time they are on the field. Travis Dannelly, Brad Cline and Braden Cannon all showed they can do the job and give us more depth. We also are excited about the freshmen we signed, as they bring another dimension to the squad with their size.” The offensive line is the backbone of the offense and Bennett looks to this group to do the job. There are several players, including projected starters Nick Johnson and Antwon Trice, who have played college football in this group, making them more experienced than most on the team. This experience is going to be important, as the group grows together over the course of a season. “These guys are some of my favorites and the key for any team, as they are the unsung heroes of any football team,” Bennett commented. “The greater the offensive line is, the greater your team can be, as they are the catalyst for any offense. Normally when an offensive lineman joins the program, you have linemen already there that have been in the trenches and played. While young, we have some players that do have some college experience on the line. The rest it will be brand new to them when they take on an outside opponent. But this group will be a key, as the better that our offensive line can adapt to the defense’s stunts and blitzes, the more we will be able to add to our offensive arsenal. However, we were very pleased with them in the spring and look forward to adding some more talented freshmen to the mix.” DEFENSE Bennett and his coaching staff have a history of defensive success. Utilizing an aggressive 3-4 base, the staff, including defensive coordinator Curtis Walker, will look to attack offenses and create chaos. The group’s final season at Catawba produced a defense that posted four shutouts in games where their defense gave up less than 100 total yards. Again, youth will be a key, as the 2003 Chants lack that experience and will match up against many battle-tested teams and players. “Defensively, we will base out of a 3-4, but I think we will also utilize different variations out of that,” Bennett said. “However, we will have to see how well our young players can stand up against 21- and 22-year-old linemen who have been in the weight room for four years to determine what we can do on the defensive side. We have to be very creative on defense with some of the things that we do.” The defensive line will be the first line of defense for the Chants. All coaches believe that the line of scrimmage is the key in any game, and Coastal’s staff is no different. The coaches look for this group to make an impact immediately and provide opportunities for all on defense to make plays. “The guys on the defensive line have been working hard, but we also went out and added some in our recruiting class to give us some additional depth and talent on the defensive line,” Bennett continued. “We recruited just one junior college player this year, as we want to build this program the right way, but he will definitely 2003 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL M EDIA GUIDE add to that position with his experience. The four recruits have to be ready to come in and play immediately, as the jobs across the front are still wide open entering the fall.” The linebackers are looked on to be involved on every play in a 3-4 defensive scheme. The coaches have worked hard the last year to develop the current players, including Jasper Brooks, Luther Shuler, Shaun Gaines, Ryan Lowery and Jamar Leath, who all showed ability in the spring game. However, their growth is going to have to continue at a rapid pace for the defense to be successful. “Linebackers are very important in the 3-4 defense and ours is no exception,” Bennett said. “We have to continue to get stronger in that position and learn to react, including the different stunts and blitzes. In our defense, if the linebackers aren’t good, then we will struggle. We will probably roll through eight linebackers per game, so a lot people will have the opportunity to step up and make an impact.” In the defensive backfield, Bennett looks to a group that have yet to play a down of college football to hold their own. With many teams sporting a “West-Coast” or pro-style offense, the passing game has become more prevalent. He knows that the group will get challenged early and often and hopes that they rise to the challenge. “At corner back, Williamson and McFadden showed good skills in our workouts the past year, but they are young,” Bennett said. “We also signed three this past spring that all have very good speed – Buchanan, Geiger and Joshen - and will add immediate depth. There is nothing that will take the place of game experience, so we hope these guys can get it under their belt and quick, because this position is always going to be tested. Myers and Cain have done a great job in the spring at the safeties, backed up by Carr and Moore. The addition of Quinton Teal in the fall is exciting with the athleticism and enthusiasm he brings to that spot.” SPECIAL TEAMS The special teams are often the difference in a football game, and Bennett knows the importance of them. However as with many other positions on the field, things will be determined during the preseason practices and scrimmages as coaches look for several people to step up and be a part of the action. “The kicking game is wide open heading into the fall,” Bennett stated. “A lot will depend on how hard the kickers and long snappers work over the summer. We are also working on developing holders for the kicking, but all of our special teams will be determined in the fall once we see how people have progressed in the summer. But we also know the importance of this part of our team, as the special teams can have a major impact on winning or losing a football game.” SCHEDULE September 6, 2003 is a red-letter date for Coastal Carolina football, as the program opens its inaugural season against Newberry. The Chanticleers also take on several prominent I-AA programs, including Morehead State, Jacksonville and Davidson. “This is going to be a very challenging schedule for a first-year program,” Bennett concluded. “Newberry will be a tough opening game as they have brought in a very high level of talent and could be one of the most talented teams we will face all season. Playing non-conference teams like Morehead State, Jacksonville and Davidson will be a great test, as those schools have built solid traditions in football.” Five home games dot the Chants' first schedule, including a pair of Big South Conference contests. Coastal's first-ever Big South game is against defending champion Gardner-Webb, Oct. 4. CCU will wrap up the first home season against first-year Big South member VMI, Nov. 1, celebrating the first-ever football homecoming in the school's history. “In the Big South, the addition of VMI has improved the level of play in the conference,” Bennett stated. “Gardner-Webb is a great football team, and I thought they deserved a chance to be in the playoffs after having just one loss and that to Georgia Southern. Liberty and Charleston Southern will also be a battle for our young team. FOOTBALL hits the scene and the Chanticleer Sports Network will be there to describe every play! Coastal Carolina University has joined forces with Cumulus Broadcasting and “The Team” 93.9 FM, 93.7 FM, and 1050 AM, the Grand Strand’s only sports radio stations to deliver unprecedented coverage of the Chanticleers. The football broadcast package also includes an hour-long Call-in Show, Thursday nights, featuring Coastal Carolina Head Coach David Bennett. Adding to the Chanticleers’ local coverage are network affiliates scheduled to clear all football broadcasts. With those affiliates, fans can hear TOUCHDOWN COASTAL CAROLINA!! across South Carolina’s Coastal Plains from Columbia to Conway. Describing the action will be Matt Hogue who enters his seventh year as “Voice of the Chanticleers.” His colorful, exciting calls have become synonomous with Chanticleer Athletics. A 14-year broadcast veteran, Hogue has built a diverse play-by-play resume that includes stints with USC’s Gamecock Radio Network, Minor League Baseball, and freelance appearances on regional TV including Fox Sports Net and ESPN Regional. He also serves as the broadcast voice of the official Big South Conference basketball TV package. Joining Hogue as the analyst on football broadcasts will be local broadcast veteran Layne Harris whose work has been heard and seen on area high school football and the prestigious Beach Ball Classic basketball tournament. A producer for Lucky Dog Television Productions in Conway, Harris also worked with the original Charlotte Hornets Sports Network as a studio host and producer and cites numerous freelance TV credits to resume. Rounding out the broadcast talent is Joe Cashion who will serve as the gameday host and sideline reporter. Cashion is Sports Director of WPUB-FM and WCAM-AM Radio in Camden, S.C. where he handles play-by-play duties in several sports, including local high school football. Cashion has called the action for several state playoff and chmpionship games. An active National Guardsman, Cashion served in numerous public affairs/ radio capacities during his past military service. Air Force Head Coach Fischer Deberry brought Coach Bennett to my attention when he sent me a letter stressing that David was the person we needed to hire.” In seven years as the Head Coach at Catawba, Bennett posted an overall record of 63-17, leading the Indians to three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs, including a run into the national semifinal round in 2001. “David Bennett has had proven success at Catawba College and we are pleased to have him as the inaugural football coach at Coastal Carolina University,” said Warren Koegel, CCU’s Director of Athletics. “Coach Bennett genuinely cares about the well-being of the student-athletes as well as their involvement in the community. He is an excellent teacher of the game and will be able to put together a plan that will enable Coastal Carolina to be competitive in I-AA football. As a native of Cheraw, he has a great rapport with high school coaches throughout South Carolina.” Bennett, 41, joined the Catawba staff in 1990 as an assistant coach and was promoted to head coach on November 14, 1994. In his first season, he led the Indians to a 7-3 record, earning both South Atlantic Conference and American Football Coach’s Association Coach of the Year honors. The 1996 Indians’ squad posted a 9-2 record and captured the SAC Championship. The 1997 and 1998 teams posted record of 8-3 and 6-4, respectively, before Coach Bennett’s program made its assault on the NCAA Division II national football scene. The 1999 season saw Catawba post an 11-2 record and earn the first of three NCAA Division II playoff berths. An 11-1 record and another SAC Championship came in 2000, but the best was yet to come. In 2001, Catawba went 11-2 to give Bennett 32 a 33-5 record over the past three seasons. The Indians won the SAC Championship and the South Region Championship before falling to Grand Valley State in the national semifinals. In addition to the incredible seven-year record as a head coach, Bennett earned four SAC Coach of the Year honors and three AFCA South Region Coach of the Year honors during his career. “It is tough to leave such a great family at Catawba, but it is great to be joining a great family at Coastal Carolina University,” said Bennett. “Everyone I met while visiting the University — from Dr. Ingle, to Dr. Sally Horner, to Coach Koegel, to the faculty, staff and other head coaches — they all have a genuine interest and passion to start a football program in a first-class way. To take a program that does not even have a ball yet and build it from the ground up.” Raised in Cheraw, South Carolina, Bennett earned 10 varsity letters at Cheraw High School, where he was named All-Conference in football, basketball, tennis and track. A threeyear-starter in football, including the final two at quarterback, he led the Braves to a 20-4 record his final two seasons, including the 1979 AAA State Championship. A 1984 graduate of Presbyterian College, Coach Bennett lettered in football and golf while earning a Bachelor of Art’s degree in History and Social Studies with a minor in coaching. He earned the Unsung Hero Award from his teammates for his play during the 1983 season. He also began his coaching career at Presbyterian, working with the wide receivers as a student assistant. Coach Bennett earned his Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Clemson University in 1986, where he worked with the running backs on the Tigers’ 1986 ACC Championship squad. While at Clemson, he coached in the Independence and Gator Bowls. In 1987, he ser ved as the offensive coordinator at Goose Creek High School, a AAAA program in Charleston, South Carolina. The Gators boasted the top rushing offense in the state that season. Coach Bennett then coached at Newberry College before accepting the position at Catawba. He and his wife Melanie have a daughter, Hayes (10) and a son, Jeb (7). Jamie Snider is finishing his first year on the coaching staff at Coastal Carolina University, where he works with the offensive line and serves as the offensive coordinator. The 34-year-old Snider (79-69) has direct ties with CCU Head Coach David Bennett, serving on the football staff at Catawba College for 14 seasons prior to joining the staff at Coastal Carolina. Snider started his tenure at Catawba as a student assistant from 1988-91, after playing one season for the Indians. After leaving the program for a year, he returned as an assistant offensive line coach for one year and then was the offensive line coach for three seasons, before adding the offensive coordinator role in 1995. In his final six seasons at Catawba as the coordinator, he helped guide the program to three NCAA Division II playoff appearances and a berth in the national semifinal in 2001. His offense ranked 25th in the nation in scoring in 2000 and 27th nationally in 2001, while helping the program to three South Atlantic Conference titles in 1996, 2000 and 2001. He also served as recruiting coordinator for four years, bringing in classes that improved the program from 2-9 in 1994 to a combined 30-11 for the 1995-98 seasons. A 1991 graduate of Catawba, Snider earned his bachelors degree in history with a secondary education certification. As a student, he was a member of the Dean’s List and also Kappa Delta Pi, the education honor society. A native of Yadkinville, North Carolina, Snider was a three-sport standout at Forbush High School, earning letters in football, wrestling and track, earning All-Conference accolades in football and wrestling. As a senior, he was named the Most Valuable Player on the football and wrestling teams and earned the school’s Male Athlete of the Year honor in 1987. Snider and his wife Rebecca live in Conway with their daughter McKenna (7-18-01). Curtis Walker is in his first year as the defensive coordinator for Coastal Carolina University’s football program. Walker has served on David Bennett’s coaching staff for the past nine years, spending seven years on the staff at Catawba College. He was the linebackers coach from 1995-2000 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2001, where he served for his final season. As defensive coordinator, the Indians ranked first in the nation in scoring defense, 11th in rushing defense and 22nd in total defense. During his tenure at Catawba, the program made the NCAA Division II playoffs three straight seasons, including a semifinal berth in 2001. Prior to his time at Catawba, Walker got his coaching start at Salisbury High School as the linebackers coach. 33 The 33-year-old (4-12-70) native of Burlington, N.C. was a four-year starter and letterwinner at Catawba College. Walker earned All-American honors his final three seasons, including first-team accolades as a senior in 1992 and was honored as a First Team AllSouth Atlantic Conference selection three times. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1991 and served as team captain his senior season. He earned his bachelors degree in December 1992, majoring in sociology. Walker was a two-time All-Conference selection at Graham High School, earning Mid-State Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1987. A 1988 graduate of the school, he held the school’s record for career tackles for 14 years. Walker and his wife, Sheka (Foxx) reside in Conway. Antoine Rivens is in his first season as assistant head coach and will also handle the defensive line. The 33-year-old Rivens (4-7-70) arrived at Coastal from North Carolina Central University, where he was the assistant head coach offensive line coach for the past four seasons. Prior to that, he was the offensive line and special teams coach at Livingstone College, helping the Blue Bears to the 1997 and 1998 CIAA Conference titles. During his five seasons at Livingstone, he had at least one all-conference lineman each season. A three-year starter and letterwinner at South Carolina on the offensive line, he was selected Freshman Player of the Year in 1989 and as a team captain for his senior season. Rivens graduated in 1992 with a degree in criminal justice. Following his collegiate career, Rivens played professionally with the former Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League (1994) and the Shreveport Pirates in the Canadian Football League (1995). Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Rivens attended West Charlotte High School, earning letters in football, basketball and track. He graduated in 1988 and was honored as the school’s Athlete of the Year as a senior. Rivens lives in Conway with his wife Tuletia and daughter Ariana (7-5-96). Drew Watson is completing his first year on the football staff at Coastal Carolina University, coaching the safeties. He also serves as the football program’s recruiting coordinator. The 36-year-old Watson (8-29-66) previously was on the coaching staff at Wofford College for 12 seasons. For six seasons, he served as the running backs coach and was the offensive line coach for six seasons. During his tenure at Wofford, the team led the nation in rushing offense and made the NCAA Division-II Playoffs two separate occasions. Prior to that, he served as the secondary coach at Newberry College for the 1989 and 1990 seasons. 34 A 1989 graduate of Newberry College with a bachelor’s in marketing, Watson was a four-year letterwinner and three year starter at cornerback for the Indians. He earned Second Team NAIA All-American honors and First Team All-South Atlantic Conference honors as a senior, as well as the team’s Most Valuable Player award. As a junior, he was also named Honorable Mention All-American. He attended T.L. Hanna High School, where he played football and ran track prior to graduating in 1984. A native of Anderson, South Carolina, Watson resides in Conway with his wife Melanie (Dillingham) and his son Cole (4-29-94) and daughter Cate (12-1000). Kevin Brown is in his first season on the coaching staff at Coastal Carolina University, working as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. The 28-year-old Brown (3-3-75) is well known to CCU Head Coach David Bennett, as he was both a player and a coach for Bennett at Catawba from 19932001. As an assistant coach at Catawba for four seasons, he helped lead the program from a 6-4 record his first season to three NCAA Division II Playoff appearances, including a 12-2 record in 2001 and a berth in the NCAA semifinals. As a player, Brown was the 1996 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year after leading Catawba to a 9-2 record and the No. 4 ranking in NCAA Division II. A four-year starter at quarterback, Brown is the program’s leader in touchdown passes for a single season with 18 and a career with 53. He also ranks third all-time with 4,807 passing yards and earned his bachelors in physical education in 1998. As a three-sport letterwinner at Berkeley High School, Brown was named All-Conference and the team’s Most Valuable Player in football. He also earned All-Conference honors in baseball and lettered in basketball. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Brown is single and lives in Conway. A local coach come home, Hunter Spivey is in his first season on the coaching staff at Coastal Carolina, coaching the wide receivers. Spivey arrived at Coastal Carolina after spending the last four years coaching at Newberry College. He remained at the school on the coaching staff after starting for three years for the Indians. The 29-year-old Spivey (7-21-74) earned four letters at Newberry, earning the team’s Most Valuable Player honors as a senior, as well as being rated one 35 of the top 20 quarterbacks in Division II. He left the Indians ranked third all-time in passing yardage, while earning his bachelors in physical education in 1997. Spivey was a standout at Conway High School in three sports, earning letters in football baseball and basketball. He was named “Toast of the Coast”, as well as an All-Area and All-Region First Team quarterback. He was the team’s Most Valuable Player as a senior and holds numerous quarterback records at Conway. Spivey is single and resides in Conway. Keith James is in his first season on the football staff at Coastal Carolina University, serving as the running backs coach. James arrived at CCU from Winston-Salem State University, where he coached for the last six years. During his time at WinstonSalem State, the program won two consecutive CIAA Championships in 1999 and 2000 and were victorious in the 2000 Pioneer Bowl. During his time at WSSU, he also was the softball coach, leading the Lady Rams to a 49-18 record in two seasons. His softball team was also awarded the school’s Director’s Cup for the team with the highest grade point average for the third consecutive year. Prior to his time at WSSU, he spent two years at Mount Tabor High School, where his team improved five games during his tenure. The 37-year-old James (5-22-66) graduated from Winston-Salem State in 1989 with a bachelors in mass communication. As a quarterback, James led his team to the 1988 CIAA Championship game, where he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. He then attended North Carolina A&T, earning a masters in adult education in 1998. A three-sport letterwinner at Dudley Senior High School, James was the Most Valuable Player and Outstanding Offensive Player on the football squad. James also played basketball and ran track, graduating in 1984. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, James lives in Conway with his wife, Phyllis (James). Mike Castellano is starting his first year on the football coaching staff at Coastal Carolina University, working with the secondary. The 28-year-old Castellano (1-2-75) spent the last four years as a high school defensive coordinator, the last two seasons at Millbrook High School and the 1999-01 seasons at North Wilkes. During his two seasons at Millbrook, he also worked with the special teams, as he helped lead the team to a pair of state playoff appearances. Castellano spent one year with Delta State University as a graduate assistant, working with the tight ends and offensive line in the fall of 1998, helping 36 the squad to their first-ever conference championship and the national playoffs. In the spring, he shifted to working with the wide receivers and quarterbacks. Castellano is very familiar with CCU head coach David Bennett, working for three seasons as a student assistant coach at Catawba. A 1997 graduate of the school, he received his bachelor’s in history in December 1997. He also earned his master’s of education in 2000 from Delta State. Born in Somerset, New Jersey, Castellano was a three-sport standout at Delaware Valley High School, playing football, baseball and basketball during his career. Castellano is single and resides in Conway. Brian Hinson is in his first year as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University and will work with the tight ends. The 26-year-old Hinson (2-28-77) began his coaching career at North Rowan High School. In his two years as an assistant, he coached one All-State and five All-Conference performers, while helping the Cavaliers advance to the third round of the North Carolina state playoffs each year. A 2000 graduate of Catawba, Hinson was a twotime All-American and All-Region selection for the Indians. He was also a three-time All-Conference honoree, serving as team captain and earning the squad’s Most Valuable Player honor his senior season. During that 1999 season, he also earned the Kirkland Award for the top male athlete at Catawba, as well as the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the top offensive lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. Following his senior season, Hinson was selected to play in the Division II Football All-Star game. Having a bachelors in physical education, Hinson is currently working towards a masters degree in elementary education at Coastal. He is single and resides in Conway. Todd McComb starts his first year as the defensive graduate assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University. The 22-year-old McComb (2-9-81) is a 2003 graduate of Catawba, where he played football for current CCU head coach David Bennett for three years. A two-time All-American at inside linebacker, he ranks second all-time in career tackles for the Indians with 401. As a senior, he was named Catawba’s Kirkland Award winner for the top senior male athlete after earning All-Region and All-Conference honors to go with his All-American awards for the second straight year. He was selected to play in the East Coast Bowl and the Cactus Bowl All-Star games following his senior year. He was also named to the SAC Honor Roll and Academic All-District all four years, as well as making the Dean’s List twice. 37 Born in Frankfurt, Germany, McComb was a threesport standout at Thomasville (NC) Senior High School, earning letters in football, basketball and baseball and graduating in 1999. A two-time All-Conference selection in football, he was the Player of the Year in his conference as a senior. He was selected to the AllNorthwest team and was part of a state title during his career. He also was a part of a state title in basketball and a two-time All-Conference honoree in baseball. McComb earned his bachelor ’s of ar ts in mathematics with a minor in secondary education from Catawba in May 2003. He is working on his master’s in secondary education mathematics at Coastal this year. He is single and resides in Conway. Viktor Boyd is finishing his first season as the football strength and conditioning coach at Coastal Carolina University. The 24-year-old Boyd (3-3-78) previously served as the assistant strength coordinator at Catawba College in 2000, helping develop a team that went 14-1 and advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. Following that, he served as a graduate assistant at Clemson for the 2001-02 school year, working primarily with the women’s soccer and men’s tennis team and assisting with several other teams, including the football and track teams. A 2000 graduate of Catawba College with a degree in recreation, Boyd lettered in football for current CCU Head Coach David Bennett. Prior to that, Boyd attended Southern Wayne Senior High School, lettering in football, swimming and track. Graduating in 1996, he was named Lineman of the Year as a senior and held the school record in the shot put and discus. Born in Okinawa, Japan, Boyd is single and resides in Conway. Wilson Beaver is finishing his first season as the football equipment and video coordinator at Coastal Carolina University. The 23-year-old (11-22-79) has ten years of experience as an equipment manager. Prior to Coastal Carolina, he worked for four years at Catawba College, serving as a student equipment manager for David Bennett’s football team. During his time, the Indians won two conference titles and made three appearances in the NCAA Divison II Playoffs. He was also honored with South Atlantic Conference Student Service Awards for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. He graduated from Catawba in 2002 with a bachelors in physical education. A native of Albemarle, North Carolina, Beaver also spent four years as a student equipment manager and athletic trainer at Albemarle High School. A 1998 graduate, he was given the Athletic Service Award for his work, as well as having an award named for him. A member of the Athletic Equipment Manager’s Association, Beaver is single and currently resides in Myrtle Beach. Van Holder is in his first season as a student assistant football coach at Coastal Carolina University. Holder graduated from York Comprehensive High School in York, S.C. in 2001, where he was captain of the football team. 38 Jill Cress is in her second year as the football administrative assistant. The 24-year-old Cress (12-20-78) was a four-year letterwinner at Campbell in basketball from 1997-2001, leading the Camels to the 2000 TAAC title and the NCAA Tournament. A graduate of South Rowan High School, she was a three-sport standout in basketball, softball and tennis. Founded in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured in its brief history into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence, both on the field and in the classroom. The Conference’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic league is evident by a bold basketball television package, a state-of-the art web site and nine schools committed to excellence, which will carry the Conference through the 21st century. The Big South Conference, in its 20th year of existence, consists of nine member institutions in the Southeast. Members include: Birmingham-Southern College, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, High Point University, Liberty University, UNC Asheville, Radford University, Virginia Military Institute and Winthrop University. Big South Football began play in the Fall of 2002, bringing the number of Division I championship programs the Big South is sponsoring to 18. There are nine championship sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, indoor/outdoor track and tennis, and nine for women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor/outdoor track and volleyball. This season, Big South champions in the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, 74 men’s and women’s golf, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track and field will receive automatic bids to NCAA Championships. The Big South signed landmark television agreements in 2002 and 2003, making the Conference’s one of the leaders among all Division I Leagues in television exposure for its student athletes. Agreements with The Football Network and College Sports Television will give coverage to Big South football, as well as sports which traditionally don’t get maximum exposure. This is in addition to a very aggressive men’s and women’s basketball package which is carried on several networks, including ESPN, Fox Sports Net, Comcast Sports Southeast and the Big South Television Network. Beginning in the Spring of 2003, the Big South kicked off its 20th Anniversary Celebration by forming a Hall of Fame. Inducted into the first class were 11 former student-athletes and administrators who were key in the early development and vitality of the Big South. In addition to the Big South’s athletic accomplishments, the League also honors academic achievement. Each year the Presidential Honor Roll and the George A. Christenberry Awards honor outstanding work in the classroom by the League’s student-athletes. For the ninth year, the Conference’s Sports Information Directors will select a Scholar-Athlete in each Conference sport and a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Additionally, the Big South Select- Scholars, honored by the Conference’s Faculty Athletics Representatives, will be presented for its fourth consecutive year. The League’s outreach program includes a community day at which select studentathletes help a local charity, such as Habitat for Humanity complete a project. In May of 1998, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Charleston Southern President, succeeded Winthrop President Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio as Conference President. Hunter, who served as the League’s Vice President under DiGiorgio, has now entered his second term as Conference President. Under his leadership, the Big South continues to push several initiatives focusing on strategic planning, fiscal integrity, community involvement and enhancement of athletic competition. Dr. DiGiorgio’s leadership served the Conference well during his tenure. He represented the Big South nationally as a member of the prestigious President’s Commission and Board of Directors of the NCAA. He spent two terms as league President (six years), succeeding former Radford University President Dr. Donald Dedmon. Dedmon also spent two terms (six years) at the helm of the League and played an instrumental role in establishing the Big South as a competitive NCAA Division I Conference. The Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell, and Augusta President George Christenberry initially began recruiting members into the Big South. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. By 1984, the League’s charter members included: Armstrong State, Augusta, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Radford and Winthrop. Not only has the league seen changes in membership, but in administration as well. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner. Under his leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. So integral was Sasser to the growth of the League, that in 2000 the Conference renamed the Commissioner’s Cup, the award given to the institution with the most successful athletic year, to the George F. Sasser Cup. In 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser, who would continue to serve the League as Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina University until his retirement in 1999. Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference, including the development of the Big South Marketing Group, which has resulted in increased revenues and exposure for the Conference and its members. He also brought television coverage to Big South George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for the fifth time in 2001. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in each of the 18 championships. The Chanticleers’ five Sasser Cup awards tie for the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2001 award by capturing Big South titles in baseball, softball, and women’s tennis. Coastal also posted one second place finish and seven third place finishes. In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships. women’s basketball, a first in Conference history. Under Kallander’s leadership the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, reaffirming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. As college athletics has rolled into the 21st century, a vibrant Big South Conference is emerging, providing quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social and athletic development of each student- athlete. The induction took place at The Westin Resort – Hilton Head Island during the League’s annual awards dinner. The Hall of Fame was formed as part of the League’s 20th Anniversary celebration. Headlining the first class are League co-founders George A. Christenberry and Howard Bagwell, and it’s first two Commissioners, Edward “Dick” Singleton and George A. “Buddy” Sasser. Also honored by the League were Campbell Athletic Director Wendell Carr, Coastal Carolina men’s basketball player, Tony Dunkin, Coastal Carolina softball player Michelle Hall, Radford men’s soccer standout, Dante Washington, Radford women’s basketball player, Stephanie Howard, Ilona Fekete Thimmer, a volleyball player from UNC Asheville and Winthrop softball player Lisa Kemme. “It was wonderful to bring together and honor those administrators and student-athletes who helped bring the Big South Conference from its infancy to where we are today,” said Kyle B. Kallander, Big South Commissioner. “We believe that their contributions were paramount in the growth of this League and we would not be where we are today without them.” Former Big South Commissioner and Coastal Carolina A.D. Coastal Carolina’s Inductees In the Inaugural Class of the Big South Hall of Fame Tony Dunkin, Coastal Carolina Men’s Basketball Player (1989-1993) Dunkin remains the only player in NCAA Division I history to be named a Conference’s Player of the Year four consecutive years, as he was the Big South Player of the Year from 1990-1993. CCU and the Big South’s all-time leading scorer with 2,151 points. He led the Chanticleers to the 1991 and 1993 NCAA Tournaments. He was a four-time Big South All-Conference honoree and three-time All-Tournament selection. He was named the 1990 Big South Rookie of the Year. Dunkin averaged 20.7 points per game during his career. He ranks third all-time at Coastal Carolina with 725 rebounds. Coastal Carolina had an 81-43 record during Dunkin’s career. He played professionally in Europe for five years. Michelle Hall, Coastal Carolina Softball Player (1990-1993) Hall had 104 wins as a pitcher for the Lady Chanticleers, one of just eight players in the NCAA Division I history to win more than 100 games. She was a four-time Big South All-Conference team member and a three-time member of the Big South All-Tournament team. She was named to the NCAA All-Southeast Region team three times and was the first Big South player ever to be named to that team. She ranks fifth in NCAA history with 172 games pitched and 140 complete games. She also ranks seventh in NCAA history with 140 games started, and she ranks eighth in NCAA history with 11 career saves. George F. “Buddy” Sasser, Big South Conference Commissioner (1989-1996); Coastal Carolina Director of Athletics (1986-1989 and 1996-1999) Sasser served as the Big South Commissioner from 1989-1996 and had two stints as Coastal Director of Athletics (1986-1989 and 1996-1999). While Big South Commissioner, Sasser was responsible for increasing membership, gaining automatic bids to the NCAA Basketball Tournament and adding basketball television exposure for the League. The Commissioner’s Cup award, which goes to the institution with the best overall athletic performance for that year, was renamed Sasser Cup in his honor. Sasser served as head The Inaugural Big South Conference Hall of Fame Class football coach at ETSU (1982-86) and Wofford (1977-82). He also served as Director of Athletics at ETSU (1982-1986). Dr. Edward M. “Dick” Singleton, Big South Conference Commissioner (19831989); Coastal Carolina Chancellor (1963-1983) Singleton served as the Big South’s first Commissioner, holding the post from 1983 through 1988. He was also Coastal Carolina’s Chancellor from 1963-1983. One of the founding fathers of the League, he currently serves as a senior advisor to CCU President Dr. Ronald Ingle. He is a member of the Coastal Education Foundation and the CINO (Coastal Is Number One) Board. Singleton will also serve as the chair for Coastal Carolina’s 50th anniversary in 2004.
