WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?
A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives
Coastal Carolina University one of the
most unique nicknames in all of sports.
Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s
Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal
when the University was a member of
the University of South Carolina
system.
A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules
the barnyard with cunning and wit. His
competitiveness never wanes as he
battles to the end, using his brains to
come out on top every time.

2003 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL M EDIA GUIDE
5
Anticipation. Excitement. Anxiousness. Questions. All words
that refer to the first-ever season of collegiate football at Coastal
Carolina University. As the date for Coastal Carolina's first college
football game on September 6 approaches, Head Coach David
Bennett is excited about what has happened so far and even more
anxious about what lies ahead for the first football team at CCU.
“It’s drawing very close,” Bennett said. “It’s very exciting to see
things like the stadium, the lights, and the goal posts going up, and
our team will be as young and exciting as that stadium. We are going
to make some mistakes early, because we are so young, but our
hope is that our kids will play their hearts out every game. And if we
have a chance to win each game, we will be way ahead as a program.
“We, as coaches, are like everybody else,” he continued. “We
can’t wait to go out there and see how our guys respond to playing
someone else other than ourselves. We just hope everyone will be
patient, including ourselves as coaches, because it is hard to realize
that we are a freshman-laden team with a sprinkle of upperclassmen.
We are going to learn together, but the great thing is that these guys
are going to learn by playing. They aren’t going to learn just on the
practice field, but also on the game field and that can be a great
advantage.”
There have been numerous challenges to reach this point of
putting the team on the field for its first season. Not only did Bennett
have to put together a coaching staff and a schedule, he had to build
a team from the ground up. The coaching staff put together a pair of
recruiting classes, but then spent an entire year practicing without a
game, many of those practices occuring off campus while the facilities
have been under construction for use this fall. But it has been a
learning experience that the staff has used to its benefit.
“We have been positive with our kids about everything that has
occurred so far,” the eighth-year head coach stated. “We remind them
that they are making memories that will last forever, whether it was
practicing at Carolina Forest, Myrtle Beach, the Conway Recreation
Center, Socastee or a driving range, which was pretty neat. Once
the practice field and stadium are done, the kids who were with us
this first year will be the only ones with those special memories. The
team has gone through a lot of adversity and grown together already
to get this far, and it will only make them stronger and appreciate
what we have in the future. I think that this team, in the games to
come and years to come, will be more successful for it.”
However, all the practice that Coastal has had during the 200203 school year can only prepare them so much for competition on
the field. The philosophy will change when the first game rolls around,
as the coaches will have an opponent to focus on with the squad.
“We are probably the youngest football team in America,” Bennett
said. “When you look at our depth chart, you are going to see a lot of
freshmen. But the great thing about that is that they will be learning
on the playing field and we will get to utilize that experience as they
will be with us for quite a while in building this program.
“All we can ask of our young men is to get better each and
every day and every week,” he continued. “We want them to compete
hard and play fair on the field and work hard in the classroom and
community to make a difference. I think if we do those things, we will
get this program where we need to be. My son Jeb asked me how
many games we were going to win this year and I told him that I
honestly have no clue. We will just have to compete every week and
see how we develop as a team throughout the season.”
Through his years of coaching, Bennett has developed his own
style of coaching and team, both on and off the field. Not only does
he look to have a team that is successful on the field, but also a
contributor to the surrounding community. That philosophy has been
adopted with the program at Coastal and, in his opinion, only
enhances the experience for the student-athletes.
“In our priorities as a program, football is not at the top of the
list,” Bennett stated. “We want our young men to grow as individuals
and become better people. Part of that comes through the volunteer
activities that we have our student-athletes participate in. I don’t know
how many will become All-Americans or how many games we will
6
win, but they will leave our program as better people, knowing how
to help others.”
The team will have almost a month of preparation before its first
game, but the coaches know the biggest growth will come from each
week’s games. What the staff is working towards is the entire team
working as one unit and developing as a group towards the common
goal - winning football games.
“We are hoping that all three phases – offense, defense and
special teams – will come together at the same pace and make us
better each week,” Bennett said. “It was impressive to us, as a
coaching staff, that we had no turnovers and no injuries in our spring
game. That’s very unusual to have no turnovers in a game, especially
with a young squad, but it was definitely encouraging to our entire
staff. That could be a key for us to have a chance to win games this
fall if we can take care of the football and stay healthy.
“I think that will be very exciting in the fall when we combine the
returners with the incoming freshmen,” Bennett continued. “While
we are going to be playing with only two signing classes, I think it will
make these guys grow together and have a special bond. Our
coaches believe that they will play hard every down and be something
that the fans and supporters of Coastal Carolina can be proud of.”
With that in mind, let's look at the three phases of Coastal's
inaugural football squad.
OFFENSE
The offense showed some signs of life in the first annual TealWhite game, scoring 35 points in the shortened game. As
encouraging as that was, Bennett and offensive coordinator Jamie
Snider know that things will change when the Chants prepare to
take on their opponents during the season.
“Offensively, we will utilize multiple formations, but we aren’t going
to be able to be too wide open in the beginning,” Bennett stated.
“That can only happen through experience, and we just don’t have
that yet. We have to be careful, as a coaching staff, and pick a few
things and do those very well in the early stages and build from
there. It is kind of like building a house for us. You have to build a
strong foundation and go up from there and that is what we are doing
with this team and this program. We hope everyone, including our
coaches, will be patient in this process, as it gives us the best chance,
now and in the future, to win.”
The most prominent spot on the field is the quarterback position.
Tyler Thigpen and Scott Crouch both were prominent in the TealWhite Game and are among the leading candidates at the position
heading into the fall. However, newcomer Ren McKinnon will be part
of a group battling for that starting role.
“I think we will have great competition in the fall for the starting
quarterback job, and that is a better source of motivation for players
than coaching,” Bennett said. “There are several that were with us
last year, along with an incoming freshman, that will be challenging
for that role, so we expect it to be a fierce battle.”
Aundres Perkins was one of the most talked about players at
the spring game, posting over 100 yards of combined offense in the
shortened game. But he isn't the only player that the coaches believe
can get the job done for the Chants this fall.
“Aundres Perkins is a special young man that has been blessed
with a lot of talent to go with the prototypical physical stature he has,”
Bennett commented. “He has continued to work hard, as he has
learned that the step from high school to college takes a lot of effort.
We know he will continue to do that and become faster and stronger
and could eventually be a great one. However, he has competition
as well, as Patrick Hall, while not as tall and as big, has shown he
can get it done, as he was the top running back at times in the spring.
Eshoun Talley showed good ability in the spring as well, so we could
have some good depth at the running back position.”
In utilizing multiple formations, the coaches rely on the fullback
to do many things for the offense. Not only do the coaches look for
someone who can run and pass block, but also run with and catch
the ball out of the backfield. Bennett believes he has people who
can fill that role next season and for several years to come.
2003 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL M EDIA GUIDE
“Ben Hampton grew as a player and as a person in the past
year, as he has quite a bit of talent,” Bennett stated. “He also has
people who will continue to push him, like Josh Nicholson and Breon
Lee, as he brings good things to the table. Add incoming freshmen
Brandon Fisher and Demetrius Morant to the mix, and there are a
lot of possibilities in the backfield for us in the fall.”
The receivers also are a group that showed some skill in the
Teal-White game this past spring. The group caught 21 passes for
352 yards and three touchdowns in the abbreviated contest,
including three of more than 40 yards. With that speed in house,
the coaches have added some height in the 2003 recruiting class
to make this a dangerous corps that can impact the game at a
moment’s notice.
“Our wide receivers are a varied bunch, in terms of size, but
they know what it takes to get it done,” Bennett said. “We have a lot
of guys who have grown and developed and we hope will continue
that path in the fall. Darnell Williams has the heart of a 6-10 guy
playing wideout, and Perry Parks and Chris McDonald are also cut
from the same mold, playing with a lot of heart and character every
time they are on the field. Travis Dannelly, Brad Cline and Braden
Cannon all showed they can do the job and give us more depth.
We also are excited about the freshmen we signed, as they bring
another dimension to the squad with their size.”
The offensive line is the backbone of the offense and Bennett
looks to this group to do the job. There are several players, including
projected starters Nick Johnson and Antwon Trice, who have played
college football in this group, making them more experienced than
most on the team. This experience is going to be important, as the
group grows together over the course of a season.
“These guys are some of my favorites and the key for any team,
as they are the unsung heroes of any football team,” Bennett
commented. “The greater the offensive line is, the greater your team
can be, as they are the catalyst for any offense. Normally when an
offensive lineman joins the program, you have linemen already there
that have been in the trenches and played. While young, we have
some players that do have some college experience on the line.
The rest it will be brand new to them when they take on an outside
opponent. But this group will be a key, as the better that our offensive
line can adapt to the defense’s stunts and blitzes, the more we will
be able to add to our offensive arsenal. However, we were very
pleased with them in the spring and look forward to adding some
more talented freshmen to the mix.”
DEFENSE
Bennett and his coaching staff have a history of defensive
success. Utilizing an aggressive 3-4 base, the staff, including
defensive coordinator Curtis Walker, will look to attack offenses and
create chaos. The group’s final season at Catawba produced a
defense that posted four shutouts in games where their defense
gave up less than 100 total yards. Again, youth will be a key, as the
2003 Chants lack that experience and will match up against many
battle-tested teams and players.
“Defensively, we will base out of a 3-4, but I think we will also
utilize different variations out of that,” Bennett said. “However, we
will have to see how well our young players can stand up against
21- and 22-year-old linemen who have been in the weight room for
four years to determine what we can do on the defensive side. We
have to be very creative on defense with some of the things that we
do.”
The defensive line will be the first line of defense for the Chants.
All coaches believe that the line of scrimmage is the key in any
game, and Coastal’s staff is no different. The coaches look for this
group to make an impact immediately and provide opportunities for
all on defense to make plays.
“The guys on the defensive line have been working hard, but
we also went out and added some in our recruiting class to give us
some additional depth and talent on the defensive line,” Bennett
continued. “We recruited just one junior college player this year, as
we want to build this program the right way, but he will definitely
2003 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL M EDIA GUIDE
add to that position with his experience. The four recruits have to
be ready to come in and play immediately, as the jobs across the
front are still wide open entering the fall.”
The linebackers are looked on to be involved on every play in
a 3-4 defensive scheme. The coaches have worked hard the last
year to develop the current players, including Jasper Brooks, Luther
Shuler, Shaun Gaines, Ryan Lowery and Jamar Leath, who all
showed ability in the spring game. However, their growth is going to
have to continue at a rapid pace for the defense to be successful.
“Linebackers are very important in the 3-4 defense and ours is
no exception,” Bennett said. “We have to continue to get stronger in
that position and learn to react, including the different stunts and
blitzes. In our defense, if the linebackers aren’t good, then we will
struggle. We will probably roll through eight linebackers per game,
so a lot people will have the opportunity to step up and make an
impact.”
In the defensive backfield, Bennett looks to a group that have
yet to play a down of college football to hold their own. With many
teams sporting a “West-Coast” or pro-style offense, the passing game
has become more prevalent. He knows that the group will get
challenged early and often and hopes that they rise to the challenge.
“At corner back, Williamson and McFadden showed good skills
in our workouts the past year, but they are young,” Bennett said.
“We also signed three this past spring that all have very good speed
– Buchanan, Geiger and Joshen - and will add immediate depth.
There is nothing that will take the place of game experience, so we
hope these guys can get it under their belt and quick, because this
position is always going to be tested. Myers and Cain have done a
great job in the spring at the safeties, backed up by Carr and Moore.
The addition of Quinton Teal in the fall is exciting with the athleticism
and enthusiasm he brings to that spot.”
SPECIAL TEAMS
The special teams are often the difference in a football game,
and Bennett knows the importance of them. However as with many
other positions on the field, things will be determined during the
preseason practices and scrimmages as coaches look for several
people to step up and be a part of the action.
“The kicking game is wide open heading into the fall,” Bennett
stated. “A lot will depend on how hard the kickers and long snappers
work over the summer. We are also working on developing holders
for the kicking, but all of our special teams will be determined in the
fall once we see how people have progressed in the summer. But
we also know the importance of this part of our team, as the special
teams can have a major impact on winning or losing a football game.”
SCHEDULE
September 6, 2003 is a red-letter date for Coastal Carolina
football, as the program opens its inaugural season against
Newberry. The Chanticleers also take on several prominent I-AA
programs, including Morehead State, Jacksonville and Davidson.
“This is going to be a very challenging schedule for a first-year
program,” Bennett concluded. “Newberry will be a tough opening
game as they have brought in a very high level of talent and could
be one of the most talented teams we will face all season. Playing
non-conference teams like Morehead State, Jacksonville and
Davidson will be a great test, as those schools have built solid
traditions in football.”
Five home games dot the Chants' first schedule, including a
pair of Big South Conference contests. Coastal's first-ever Big South
game is against defending champion Gardner-Webb, Oct. 4. CCU
will wrap up the first home season against first-year Big South
member VMI, Nov. 1, celebrating the first-ever football homecoming
in the school's history.
“In the Big South, the addition of VMI has improved the level of
play in the conference,” Bennett stated. “Gardner-Webb is a great
football team, and I thought they deserved a chance to be in the
playoffs after having just one loss and that to Georgia Southern.
Liberty and Charleston Southern will also be a battle for our young
team. It will be a great challenge this fall.”

Coastal Carolina University’s Chanticleer Sports Network enters a new
era in 2003. FOOTBALL hits the scene and the Chanticleer Sports Network
will be there to describe every play! Coastal Carolina University has joined
forces with Cumulus Broadcasting and “The Team” 93.9 FM, 93.7 FM, and
1050 AM, the Grand Strand’s only sports radio stations to deliver unprecedented coverage of the Chanticleers.
The football broadcast package also includes an hour-long Call-in Show,
Thursday nights, featuring Coastal Carolina Head Coach David Bennett.
Adding to the Chanticleers’ local coverage are network affiliates scheduled to clear all football broadcasts. With those affiliates, fans can hear TOUCHDOWN COASTAL CAROLINA!! across South Carolina’s Coastal Plains from
Columbia to Conway.
Describing the action will be Matt Hogue who enters his seventh year as
“Voice of the Chanticleers.” His colorful, exciting calls have become synonomous with Chanticleer Athletics. A 14-year
broadcast veteran, Hogue has built a diverse play-by-play resume that includes stints with USC’s Gamecock Radio
Network, Minor League Baseball, and freelance appearances on regional TV including Fox Sports Net and ESPN
Regional. He also serves as the broadcast voice of the official Big South Conference basketball TV package.
Joining Hogue as the analyst on football broadcasts will be local broadcast veteran Layne Harris whose work
has been heard and seen on area high school football and the prestigious Beach Ball Classic basketball tournament.
A producer for Lucky Dog Television Productions in Conway, Harris also worked with the original Charlotte Hornets
Sports Network as a studio host and producer and cites numerous freelance TV credits to resume.
Rounding out the broadcast talent is Joe Cashion who will serve as the gameday host and sideline reporter.
Cashion is Sports Director of WPUB-FM and WCAM-AM Radio in Camden, S.C. where he handles play-by-play duties
in several sports, including local high school football. Cashion has called the action for several state playoff and
chmpionship games. An active National Guardsman, Cashion served in numerous public affairs/ radio capacities
during his past military service.

David Bennett became
the first Head Football Coach at
Coastal Carolina University on
December 21, 2001.
Bennett, born in Greer, South
Carolina, came to Coastal Carolina
after serving seven years as the
Head Coach at Catawba College
in Salisbury, North Carolina.
“We are very pleased to have
David Bennett and his family here
at Coastal Carolina University,” said
Dr. Ronald R. Ingle, President of
the University. “He has a proven record as a coach and came
highly recommended not only from people throughout South
Carolina, but also nationally. Air Force Head Coach Fischer
Deberry brought Coach Bennett to my attention when he sent
me a letter stressing that David was the person we needed
to hire.”
In seven years as the Head Coach at Catawba, Bennett
posted an overall record of 63-17, leading the Indians to three
consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs,
including a run into the national semifinal round in 2001.
“David Bennett has had proven success at Catawba
College and we are pleased to have him as the inaugural
football coach at Coastal Carolina University,” said Warren
Koegel, CCU’s Director of Athletics. “Coach Bennett genuinely
cares about the well-being of the student-athletes as well as
their involvement in the community. He is an excellent teacher
of the game and will be able to put together a plan that will
enable Coastal Carolina to be competitive in I-AA football. As
a native of Cheraw, he has a great rapport with high school
coaches throughout South Carolina.”
Bennett, 41, joined the Catawba staff in 1990 as an
assistant coach and was promoted to
head coach on November 14, 1994. In
his first season, he led the Indians to a
7-3 record, earning both South Atlantic
Conference and American Football
Coach’s Association Coach of the
Year honors. The 1996 Indians’ squad
posted a 9-2 record and captured the
SAC Championship.
The 1997 and 1998 teams posted
record of 8-3 and 6-4, respectively,
before Coach Bennett’s program
made its assault on the NCAA Division
II national football scene. The 1999
season saw Catawba post an 11-2
record and earn the first of three
NCAA Division II playoff berths.
An 11-1 record and another SAC
Championship came in 2000, but
the best was yet to come. In 2001,
Catawba went 11-2 to give Bennett
32 
a 33-5 record over the past three seasons. The Indians won
the SAC Championship and the South Region Championship
before falling to Grand Valley State in the national semifinals.
In addition to the incredible seven-year record as a head coach,
Bennett earned four SAC Coach of the Year honors and three
AFCA South Region Coach of the Year honors during his career.
“It is tough to leave such a great family at Catawba, but it is
great to be joining a great family at Coastal Carolina University,”
said Bennett. “Everyone I met while visiting the University
— from Dr. Ingle, to Dr. Sally Horner, to Coach Koegel, to the
faculty, staff and other head coaches — they all have a genuine
interest and passion to start a football program in a first-class
way. We are honored to be selected to be a part of the dream
that will become a reality. This is the ultimate challenge for
any coach. To take a program that does not even have a ball
yet and build it from the ground up.”
Raised in Cheraw, South Carolina, Bennett earned 10
varsity letters at Cheraw High School, where he was named
All-Conference in football, basketball, tennis and track. A threeyear-starter in football, including the final two at quarterback,
he led the Braves to a 20-4 record his final two seasons,
including the 1979 AAA State Championship.
A 1984 graduate of Presbyterian College, Coach Bennett
lettered in football and golf while earning a Bachelor of Art’s
degree in History and Social Studies with a minor in coaching.
He earned the Unsung Hero Award from his teammates for
his play during the 1983 season. He also began his coaching
career at Presbyterian, working with the wide receivers as a
student assistant.
Coach Bennett earned his Master’s degree in Guidance
and Counseling from Clemson University in 1986, where
he worked with the running backs on the Tigers’ 1986 ACC
Championship squad. While at Clemson, he coached in the
Independence and Gator Bowls.
In 1987, he ser ved as the
offensive coordinator at Goose Creek
High School, a AAAA program in
Charleston, South Carolina. The Gators
boasted the top rushing offense in the
state that season. Coach Bennett then
coached at Newberry College before
accepting the position at Catawba.
He and his wife Melanie have a
daughter, Hayes (10) and a son, Jeb
(7).

The Big South Conference is a
progressive NCAA Division I athletic
conference reflecting the energy and
growth of the New South. Founded in 1983,
the Big South Conference has matured in
its brief history into a competitive leader
in college athletics, actively pursuing
excellence, both on the field and in the
classroom.
The Conference’s growing presence
as an NCAA Division I athletic league is
evident by a bold basketball television
package, a state-of-the art web site and
nine schools committed to excellence,
which will carry the Conference through
the 21st century.
The Big South Conference, in its 20th
year of existence, consists of nine member
institutions in the Southeast. Members
include: Birmingham-Southern College,
Charleston Southern University, Coastal
Carolina University, High Point University,
Liberty University, UNC Asheville, Radford
University, Virginia Military Institute and
Winthrop University.
Big South Football began play in
the Fall of 2002, bringing the number of
Division I championship programs the Big
South is sponsoring to 18. There are nine
championship sports for men: baseball,
basketball, cross country, football, golf,
soccer, indoor/outdoor track and tennis,
and nine for women: basketball, cross
country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis,
indoor/outdoor track and volleyball.
This season, Big South champions in
the sports of men’s and women’s basketball,
men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball,
74 men’s and women’s golf, baseball, softball,
men’s and women’s tennis and men’s
and women’s track and field will receive
automatic bids to NCAA Championships.
The Big South signed landmark
television agreements in 2002 and 2003,
making the Conference’s one of the
leaders among all Division I Leagues in
television exposure for its student athletes.
Agreements with The Football Network
and College Sports Television will give
coverage to Big South football, as well
as sports which traditionally don’t get
maximum exposure. This is in addition
to a very aggressive men’s and women’s
basketball package which is carried on
several networks, including ESPN, Fox
Sports Net, Comcast Sports Southeast and
the Big South Television Network.
Beginning in the Spring of 2003, the
Big South kicked off its 20th Anniversary
Celebration by forming a Hall of Fame.
Inducted into the first class were 11 former
student-athletes and administrators who
were key in the early development and
vitality of the Big South.
In addition to the Big South’s athletic
accomplishments, the League also honors
academic achievement. Each year the
Presidential Honor Roll and the George A.
Christenberry Awards honor outstanding
work in the classroom by the League’s
student-athletes. For the ninth year, the
Conference’s Sports Information Directors
will select a Scholar-Athlete in each
Conference sport and a male and female
Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Additionally, the Big South Select-
Scholars, honored by the Conference’s
Faculty Athletics Representatives, will be
presented for its fourth consecutive year.
The League’s outreach program includes
a community day at which select studentathletes help a local charity, such as Habitat
for Humanity complete a project.
In May of 1998, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter,
Charleston Southern President, succeeded
Winthrop President Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio
as Conference President. Hunter, who
served as the League’s Vice President under
DiGiorgio, has now entered his second
term as Conference President. Under his
leadership, the Big South continues to push
several initiatives focusing on strategic
planning, fiscal integrity, community
involvement and enhancement of athletic
competition.
Dr. DiGiorgio’s leadership served the
Conference well during his tenure. He
represented the Big South nationally as
a member of the prestigious President’s
Commission and Board of Directors of
the NCAA. He spent two terms as league
President (six years), succeeding former
Radford University President Dr. Donald
Dedmon. Dedmon also spent two terms
(six years) at the helm of the League and
played an instrumental role in establishing
the Big South as a competitive NCAA
Division I Conference.
The Conference was formed on August
21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then
Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard
Bagwell, and Augusta President George
Christenberry initially began recruiting
members into the Big South. One month

later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected
as the league’s first Commissioner and
continued to solicit new members. By
1984, the League’s charter members
included: Armstrong State, Augusta,
Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal
Carolina, Radford and Winthrop.
Not only has the league seen changes
in membership, but in administration as
well. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser
replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as
Commissioner. Under his leadership,
the Conference implemented its public
relations and compliance programs, and
introduced its first-ever men’s basketball
television package, featuring the Big
South competing among some of the
finest teams in the nation. So integral
was Sasser to the growth of the League,
that in 2000 the Conference renamed the
Commissioner’s Cup, the award given to
the institution with the most successful
athletic year, to the George F. Sasser Cup.
In 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced
Sasser, who would continue to serve the
League as Director of Athletics at Coastal
Carolina University until his retirement in
1999. Kallander has been instrumental in
aggressively promoting the Conference,
including the development of the Big
South Marketing Group, which has resulted
in increased revenues and exposure for
the Conference and its members. He also
brought television coverage to Big South
George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup
Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George
F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for the fifth time in 2001. The Sasser
Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director
and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic
department in the Big South Conference. The award is based
on a point system, with points being awarded based upon
each school’s finish in each of the 18 championships.
The Chanticleers’ five Sasser Cup awards tie for the most
earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the
2001 award by capturing Big South titles in baseball, softball,
and women’s tennis. Coastal also posted one second place
finish and seven third place finishes. In addition to the Big
South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different
NCAA Championships.
women’s basketball, a first in Conference
history. Under Kallander’s leadership
the Big South developed and initiated
its first long-range strategic plan, reaffirming the league’s vision as a distinctive
athletic Conference committed to the
quality of institutional life through athletic
competition.
As college athletics has rolled into
the 21st century, a vibrant Big South
Conference is emerging, providing quality
athletic competition while intentionally
fostering the academic, personal, social
and athletic development of each student-
athlete.
