Oh, this just looks sweet enough to eat!
That’s a very good thing, because fruit is an
excellent alternative to traditional desserts,
like cake and pie, which are loaded with
excess sugar and fat!

Sweet Treat Alternatives
Enjoy sweet tastes without
the processed sugars!
Too much sugar can be
bad for you! Most sweet
treats, like cookies and soda,
have a lot of sugar, but not
very many nutrients. However,
there are lots of ways you can
enjoy sweet tastes that are
much healthier!
One great alternative to a
traditional dessert is fresh fruit.
Haley’s
Notes
It’s very sweet, so it mimics the
sweetness of regular desserts.
Or try fruit bars made with
100% fruit juice! Non-fat
frozen yogurt is a delicious
option with less sugar and fat
than traditional ice cream.
Another sweet thing we
tend to have a lot of is soda.
Instead, drink lots of water
and low-fat milk! One way to
make your water more fun is
to add orange or lemon slices,
which adds a delicious citrus
punch!

Haley M. Powers here. Fruits are a great alternative to regular
dessert! I love pairing my fresh fruit (raspberries are one of my
favorites) with a little bit of dark chocolate (which is full of
antioxidants).

Jokes of the Month
Q: What do you call two
banana peels?
A: A pair of slippers!
Q: What did the Ranch
say to the fridge?
A: Close the door, I’m
dressing!
Recipe: Fun Fruit Kabobs
Ingredients
•1 apple
•1 banana
•1/3 cup green grapes
•1/3 cup red grapes
•2/3 cup pineapple
•1 cup nonfat yogurt
•1/4 cup dried coconut
Directions
•Wash the fruit, peel the banana, and cut the apple, banana,
and pineapple into chunks.
•Slide fruits onto a skewer (you’ll probably need at least 2)!
•Now, roll the fruit in yogurt, and then the coconut, for an
interesting touch of flavor!
•Enjoy! This makes a great dessert!
Exercise: Frozen Fruit Tag
•Get ready for a game of tag! Determine who is “it”!
•Now the person who is “it” must start chasing after the other
players.
•If you are tagged, you must freeze.
•In order to become unfrozen, someone else must tag you and
call out a type of fruit.
•For the rest of the game, this fruit can no longer be used! The
game ends when all players are frozen, or no one can think of
any more fruits!
Shrink Your Sugar (Intake!)
There are many ways to reduce the amount of sweet treats
you eat without losing all of the fun of it!
One way to limit sweets is to eat smaller portions. Using a
small bowl for ice cream, or splitting a candy bar, prevents you
from eating 500 calories of nearly pure sugar!
Also, try to avoid sweet drinks like sodas, sports drinks, and
fruit juices that are not 100% juice. These are loaded with extra
sugar, and water and low-fat milk are great alternatives!
Come up with new snacks instead of the ones you see in
stores. Mix together ingredients like whole-grain cereals, dried
fruit, nuts, and other things for a healthy and delicious snack!

My Favorite Drinks!
Hey there everybody!
Do you know what one of
my favorite drinks is? I
love Sprite! However, it
has a lot of sugar, and
little nutrients.
But I have an
alternative! I love water
with lemon and lime slices
in it! It tastes similar to
Sprite, without the crazy
amount of sugar! The
only thing I don’t like is
that my water can taste a
little sour. So, to solve this
problem, I will sometimes
sprinkle a little bit of
sugar in my glass of
water, and BOOM! It
tastes similar to Sprite!
Hayden
One thing to watch out for is sugar in breakfast cereals. A lot
of cereals have sugar as their first or second ingredient! So next
time you are in the cereal aisle, look for a tasty-looking cereal
with less sugar!
Don’t think this means you can never have cookies or candy
or other sweet treats! However, you do need to limit how often
you eat them! Make them a food for special occasions, and then
they become even more special!

Ways to be Healthy At
School:
As kids, we have to take
control of our health. We have
to do healthy things. Teachers
can encourage us to be
healthy by encouraging us to
bring healthy snacks to recess. Some kids bring chip and
cookies. A better choice would
be fruit. We can also be
active at recess. Some kids sit
down at recess. They should
be encouraged to get up and
move. We can also be
healthy by having healthy
food at school parties. We
could even have a dance
party instead of an eating
party. I want to be healthy
and I hope our students at my
school do too!!
Great job Destiny!
