PAGE 2 AGILITY NEWSLETTER 'HVLJQLQJD´FRUHµFXUULFXOXPIRUWKH+$1'/(5 by Karen Kay, CSCS, CES, CPS, CPT This month I would like to give you some new rules regarding training your CORE! The 3 Categories of CORE Exercises Stabilization NEW RULE #1 Exercises that develop static stability; you put your body into a position in which you must stabilize your spine an pelvis, and hold it there for a designated amount of time. These require your deepest core muscles to generate low levels of force for increasing amounts of WLPH<RX·UHIRFXVLQJRQPRVWO\RQ slow-twitch muscle fibers, developing endurance for function and performance. The most important role of the abdominal muscles is to protect your spine. NEW RULE #2 <RXFDQ·WSURWHFW\RXUVSLQHE\GRLQJ exercises that damage it. (for example, enough sit-ups will cause damage in most people) NEW RULE #3 The size of your abdominal muscles GRHVQ·WPDWWHU(muscle strength cannot predict who will have future back troubles; what matters is the stability those muscles provide) NEW RULE #4 The appearance of your midsection GRHVQ·WPDWWHUHLWKHU(function is more important than appearance) NEW RUL:E #5 Basic examples include various plank and side plank positions. 1. Plank 2. Plank with Single Arm or Single Leg Support 3. Stabilization On An Unstable Surface Standing Roll-Out These are exercises that appear to target the prime movers³-your pecs on a chest press, your upper back muscles on a row, your legs on a squat or lunge variation. (the pair of fan-shaped muscles on the sides of your back used to pull your arms downward³these muscles originate from your thoracic spine and extend to the top of your pelvis) You want your core muscles to learn to hold your spine in its neutral position under conditions that PRVWFORVHO\UHVHPEOHZKDW\RX·OO encounter in sports and everyday lift. NEW RULE #7 Your spine is already flexed, and flexing it more just makes it worse. Kneeling Roll-Out Integrated Stabilization NEW RULE #6 NEW RULE #8 ,W·VDJLYHQGXULQJWKHVHH[HUFLVHV that your deepest core muscles are working hard to safeguard your spine within its neutral zone. The extra moving parts force other muscles to contribute. This would be an example of a plank progression: The CORE includes all the muscles that attach to your hips, pelvis, and lower back. (includes the four layers of the abdominals; hip flexors; hip extensors; spine extensors; hip adductors; hip abductors; and multifidus. The crunch is not a CORE exercise. ,W·VDQ´DEµH[HUFLVHLQWKDWLWZRUNV the rectus abdominis and obliques through a range of motion, but you are not developing core stability to protect your back.) The rollout-type exercises are probably the best examples. Typically, your feet are on the ground, with your hands resting on someWKLQJWKDW·VPRYLQJIRUZDUGOLNHD swiss ball. The goal is to keep your spine in its neutral position while your center of gravity moves farther away from the middle of your body. Dynamic Stabilization You are moving one or more limbs while keeping your spine in its neuWUDOSRVLWLRQ1RZ\RX·UHEULQJLQJ more fast-twitch muscle fibers into the mix. Some of your core muscles will generate high levels of force relative to their size and functions. 1 Arm Presses While Other Arm Stabilizes www.accessacceleration.com VOLUME 1, ISSUE 8 PAGE 3 /(7·67$/.´)25:$5'µ027,21 Forward Cues: Direction cues that direct the dog to carry on straight ahead with extension. Because the motion cue is forward, the balance of cues must indicate the turn: shoulder rotation toward the dog, a combination of inside and outside arm signals, eye contact, and a verbal cue. Forward Send: Directs the dog to complete a turning obstacle and then turn. Deceleration or no-motion turning cues, presented from an approach-side location before commitment, are balanced with forward cues (verbal obstacle name, inside arm extended forward, shoulders facing forward, and indirect eye contact) to support the performance of the obstacle.
