L2P — Learner Driver Mentor Program
The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program
assists learners under 21 years of age, who
do not have access to a supervising driver
or vehicle, to gain the driving experience
required to apply for a probationary licence.
Young people are matched with fully
licensed volunteer mentors and have
access to a sponsored vehicle, which
they can use to get supervised driving
experience. L2P is free for eligible young
people.
L2P is funded by the TAC and managed by
VicRoads.
Why L2P?
A key element of the new Graduated
Licensing System requires that all learner
drivers aged under 21 years achieve a
minimum of 120 hours supervised driving
experience. This experience must be
certified and recorded by both the learner
and the supervising driver.
For most young learner drivers, 120 hours
of supervised driving practice will be
accumulated through practice with parents,
extended family, close friends or lessons
with professional driving instructors.
There are a number of young people
who have difficulty gaining access to this
experience, due to non-availability of a
vehicle or a supervising driver (or both) on
an on-going basis.
Learner Driver selection criteria:
• Limited or no access to a suitable,
roadworthy vehicle
• Limited or no access to a fully licensed
supervising driver
• 16—21 years of age
• A current Learner’s Permit
• Willing to work as part of a learner /
mentor team to gain 120 hours on-road
driving experience
How do I become an L2P mentor?
All potential mentors are required to
undergo a Police Check, Working with
Children Check and a VicRoads License
Check. Any costs associated with these
checks are covered by Frankston City
Council.
Mentors are also required to provide a
minimum of two references, attend an
interview and undertake L2P mentor
training.
A minimum of one hour a week with their
learner driver is expected for 12 months.
Mentors will also have to attend nine hours
of training at the beginning of the program,
as preparation for their role as a supervising
driver.
