1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background of
the Research 1.1.1. Justification of the research Language
is a system of conventional signals used for communication
by a whole community. To communicate, we need a language. Language can be divided into three groups; they are
first language, second language and foreign language. First
language is mother language. Second language is a language, other ones mother language, that is used for a special purpose, e.g. for education, government, etc. Whereas
foreign language is a language, other than ones mother language, which is learnt in schools, but not used in everyday
communication. (Sri Widiati,1998:7). Without language,
it is hard to imagine how people can cooperate and get
along with one another. (Prof.Dr.Ramelan,M.A.,1985:3).
There are many languages in this world according to each
nation. They are Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Danish, Finish, English and
there are many more languages. One of those languages
above, English as an international language plays as an
important role in our daily lives. Therefore, a lot of information and knowledge that come from many books and
magazines are written in English. Consequently, for
2 everyone who does not quite understand English or
another nation languages will encounter some difficulties
in order to improve knowledge and abilities, especially in
comprehending any news, which are written in English.
Every language has its own grammar. Grammar is the
system of rules governing the structure of phases, clauses,
and sentences consisting of words contained in lexicon. (Sri
Widiati,1998:7). In grammar, many parts of speech contain gerunds. The writers choose gerunds on his research

not easy to understand gerunds. This research can increase
understanding in using gerunds for the readers. Based on
English.......

6 CHAPTER II THEORETICAL REVIEW 2.1.
Theory of Gerund In many grammar books in English
version there are many explanation about theory of
gerund. each of them has a slight different explanation but most of the definitions are the same. 2.1.1.
Definition of Gerund Gerund is a noun from a verb +
ing form (Messe Students Pocket Grammar ). Gerund
is the ing form of a verb when used as a noun (Oxford Learners Pocket Dictionary). Gerund is a noun
formed from a verb (Longman Active Study Dictionary). Gerund is a noun which came from a verb plus ing
(http://catatanbahasainggris.blogspot.com/2009/04/gerunds.html).
Gerunds carry out the verb action. In English, the gerund
is identical in form to the present participle (ending in
-ing) and can behave as a verb within a clause (so that
it may be modified by an adverb or have an object), but
the clause as a whole (sometimes consisting of only one
word, the gerund itself) acts as a noun within the larger
sentence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerund). So the
writer concludes that gerund is a noun which has form
like verb + ing
