2. Specific Civils Experience
Due to the increasing demand for services within this industry, we have established a dedicated Civils division. This
division offers a total solution to the diverse and technically challenging area of civils and construction works in South
Africa. This division was established through the realization that our extensive footprint, specialist business divisions
and access to technical skills and years of experience, positioned us perfectly to form strategic alliances with our
clients. Our flexible solution offering addresses the increasing demand for service and support in this industry,
specifically with regards to Fibre Optic installations, allowing our clients to focus on their core business.
The services offered by our Civils division includes the establishment of specialized polling teams for aerial line
construction, UG teams for trenching and laying of ducts (to civil specifications), hauling teams etc. We are also able
to carry out the joining and fibre splicing on behalf of our clients. Our service also extends to the supply of a wide
variety of staff such as Microwave / BTS RF Engineers, Microwave Planners, Transmission Build Engineers /
Transmission Planners, Access Network Planners and the like to our clients. These skills can be offered on an hourly
rate per person or as a total outsourcing solution, where we will act as a sub-contractor to you, being responsible for
a specific task or the entire job.
Our Solutions are highly flexible in that it can be run for short or long-term projects anywhere in the country as well
as in Africa.

Our Project Management capabilities provide a “one-stop” shop and a single, more efficient point of contact for
clients, preventing the need to source more than one contractor to undertake essential services. This approach allows

TRANSMISSION SERVICES
•Site Placement and Acquisition: Assessing sites in terms of location and surroundings.
•Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) Testing: Geological tests needed for Micro Cell Operators (MCO) as well as new
site builds.
•Transmission Site Survey Reports (TSSR): Assessments of transmission sites including sourcing all information needed
for design and implementation of the site, displayed by means of a comprehensive report.
•Line of Site Surveys (LOS): Determining Microwave (MW) placements, heights and obstacles for new installations.
•Radio Frequency (RF) Antenna swaps: For 2G/3G upgrades.
•Radios Frequency 7/8 feeder installations
•Base Transceiver Station (BTS) installations: 8700, 8800 and 8900 system fibre link-ups and commissioning for 900
and 1800 and 2100 Remote Radio Units (RRU).
•Microwave Links: Supply, installation and commissioning of point-to-point as well as point to-multipoint services.
•Polyphase and Waterproofing: To ensure longevity.
•Installations and commissioning of: S200/S400/500 and S340 systems for Zone
Telecommunications Engineer (ZTE) Co-operation.
•Splicing and testing of fibre optic cable
•Manufacture and fabrication of brackets and pole mounts to meet site share requirements.
•Relocation of existing microwave systems
•Power installations: AC and DC reticulation
•Planning of transmission equipment
•MW commissioning and panning
•RF sweep test
•Live cutovers of transmission systems
•Fix all snags lists for sites undertaken by previous contractors

•De-installations of old obsolete equipment and replace with new

CIVIL & CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
•Site set-up and clearance (including Bulk earthworks, site fencing and security): Clearing the site of debris, rocks or
rubble and preparing the site for establishment of the communications infrastructure, including site security such as
fencing and surveillance systems.
•Trenching – buried installations and concrete casting
•Hauling (short or long haul)/ blowing of fibre: Cable is installed across a distance through a method of using
compressed air (blowing) or pulling (hauling).
•Re-instatements: Maintenance and repairs to surfaces and structures, including activities such as asphalting,
vegetation concreting and paving.
•Blasting: Chemical and explosive blasting services
•Planning of access fibre systems
•Preparation of wayleaves
•Management of all service interruptions and reporting breakages in power, water etc.
•Manhole construction of underground optical systems
All our services incorporate the following:
Contract Administration: Our admin team manages all administrative work accompanying the project including
project coordination and procurement.
Site Supervision: McWhit's team includes skilled and experienced site managers and supervisors who oversee the
operations of the project on site.
Hand over/ Sign off: On completion, projects are signed-off and approved by clients before hand over.

health and safety officer available to conduct risk assessments, evaluate sites in terms of the occupational health and
safety requirements as well as ensure compliance with these requirements. This, together with communication and
reporting on a regular basis, attending required meetings, ensuring compliance with the Compensation for
Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) and trained Safety, Health and Equipment (SHE) representatives,
ensures that we are continually focused on this important element in all projects we undertake.
•Long-standing Relationships: Through our dealings with various suppliers over time, we have built long-standing and
rewarding relationships with many. Those on our preferred supplier database provide us with preferential rates for
materials and equipment, which in turn allow us to offer our clients better rates for the services we offer. In addition,
we also have relationships with municipalities in municipal areas that we have rendered our services to.

CONCLUSION
It is not difficult to see that with our in-depth understanding of not only our industry, but of each industry we serve
