They always nest in colonies, known as rookeries. Rooks are the guys with the ‘shaggy trousers’ you see feeding in groups along the fairways. The O’Flaherty Cup (High Low handicap). This will be starting up in April Many thanks to our generous sponsors. GOLF TIP Wider if not always better Many times you will see golfers on the first tee who use a very wide stance with the driver. While a wide stance might feel powerful as you set up, it can rob you of power most of the time. If you stand too wide, it will be difficult to get a proper weight shift and cause balance problems. Take a stance in which your feet are no wider than your shoulders. This will allow you to shift your weight back to your front foot, make a good turn that is supported by your legs and remain in balance as you swing through the ball. (Bill Koran’s Golf Tip-a-Day) Our water hens and ducks are also getting ready for nesting but there is danger in the water, the American Mink. This animal has been seen in the waters around the ninth tee. The wild animal is descended from animals that escaped from fur farms in the 1950s. Rules Night There will be a night on the rules in April or early May. Keep your eye on noticeboard. Bird of the Month It is nearly time to say goodbye to the Brent Geese. They will head to Iceland and then on to Greenland to nest. Our own Rooks are busy building and repairing their nest in the tall trees all along the thirteenth. They are collecting twigs on the The mink’s dark brown coat can look black when wet. They have a white patch on the neck under the chin. It will eat any suitable prey including crayfish, rabbits, rats, frogs and water birds. Unfortunately they are doing a lot of damage to ground nesting birds and probably are keeping our swans from producing young. There is a trapping campaign to try control their number, especially in our National Parks. Let’s hope some of our water birds survive and produce some young.
