Questionnaire survey was based on the scope and relevance of the training, training methodology, training material, way forward and self-assessment of the knowledge and skills related to expected results of this training. The majority of results indicate that most of participants were happy for the training and they gained significantly from the training by improving their knowledge and skills and expressed their wish to participate at other next trainings organized at continental, regional and national levels and to extend the length of the training for next time up to two weeks. Based on the analysis done on self-assessment of knowledge and skills of participants, the results show that many of them improved after the training. 4 out of 9 participants improved on the Statement on Africa’s Climate, 7 improved on the climate indices for Climate Change Assessment, 3 improved on the generation and interpretation of products, 6 improved on the generation of Drought Monitoring products, and 6 improved on drafting briefs and statements for Decision and Policy Making. In conclusion, this means that future trainings shall put more efforts on Statement on Africa’s Climate and generation and interpretation of product sessions. The analysis shows that the training was needed to improve the climate services provided by Meteorological Services at regional and national levels. The best practice example was provided by Mr Coulibaly, who immediately after the Second Continental Training (CONTR-02) drafted the State of Climate in Ivory Coast/Cote d’Ivoire 2016. Page 1 INTRODUCTION The main purpose of the survey questionnaire was to get the self-evaluation from 11 participants who responded to questions for assessing the benefits or the knowledge they got during training that aimed to improve Climate Services in Disaster Risks Reductions in Africa. The training was organized by ACMADMESA from 13th to 17th February 2017 and held in Niamey at ACMAD Headquarters. The survey done via completed forms and each participant filled the form in a secret way. The participation rate was 98%. Summary of Questionnaire content Category of questions 1.Scope and Relevance of Training Number of questions 5 2.Training Methodology 3 3.Training Materials 5 4.Way Forward 5 5.Self-Assessment of the Knowledge and Skills Related to 2 (Each have 5 sub-questions) Table 1 : Summary of questionnaire conte Page 2 SURVEY METHODOLOGY Sample: The survey was conducted on 11 participants of the Second Continental Training (CONTR-02) among 12 participants who participated in the training. Survey procedure: 12 participants were given an evaluation form to fill manually; questions were 20 in general and everyone had right to respond or not. Here, one of the participants did not respond. Each question and its response have been evaluated by inserting the number of participants that responded to each question in Ms Excel and graphics were made to demonstrate the result. Response rates: 96% of participants responded well to the questions, 3% did not respond well some of the questions, 1% did not completely respond to all questions. Summary of Findings 1. Scope and Relevance of Training 56% of the participants strongly agreed on the scope and relevance of the training, 34% agreed, 2% disagreed and 8% strongly disagreed. 2. Training Methodology 28% of the participants strongly agreed on the training methodology, 53% agreed, 13% disagreed and 6% strongly disagreed. 3. Training material 29% of participants strongly agreed on the training material, 57% agreed, 6% disagreed, 8% strongly disagreed. Page 3 4. Way Forward 98% of participants accepted that they benefited from the training, they wish to participate in future related training sessions, they will recommend the training to other colleagues in their national institutions, and they wish to receive communication on MESA training related updates and news. 2% did not benefit from the training as the participant improved only in Climate indices for Climate Change Assessment (CCA). Self-Assessment of the Knowledge and Skills Related to For nine (9) participants responded to this question 100% improved their knowledge and skills after the training. Three participants improved in most courses which are State of Africa's Climate, Climate indices for Climate Change Assessment (CCA), generation and interpretation of products, generation of Drought Monitoring Products and, Bulletin and Statement for Decision and Policy Makers. Four (4) improved only in Climate indices for Climate Change Assessment and generation of Drought Monitoring Products, one of participant improved only in Climate indices for Climate Change Assessment (CCA) and one also improved only in generation of Drought Monitoring Product DETAILED FINDINGS: VIEWS ON THE TRAINING Scope and Relevance of Training The Training objectives were made clear Strongly agree Agree Disagree Strongly Disagree 0% 9% 36% 55% Figure 1 : Training objectives 55% of participants strongly agreed on the training objectives that were made clear, 36% agreed, 9% disagreed and no one strongly agreed. Page 18 SUGGESTIONS FROM PARTICIPANTS Participants of the Second Continental Training (CONTR-02) passed some technical and social suggestions to ACMAD-MESA for improving the organization of the next training. Suggestions given by participants are: ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ Extending the training for two weeks. Having trainers with good English skills. None exercise should have been included. Exploring the possibility of including CLIMSOFT software for data analysis. Improving the internet connection. Providing full course materials on the arrival to allow participants to preview for better understanding. Course/program to be sent to the participant before their arrival. Having a regional Focal Point for better recognition of new found skills. All training material to be on USBs and provide them to participants for avoiding the transmission of virus. Making tutorials in Power Point format would be very useful for revision. More practical work would make it better. Power point showing all steps instead of using technical manuals. These manuals should be provided at the end of the lecture for detailed understanding. It may be good if participants are asked to apply knowledge acquired to their own country and prepare to present a core story at the end of the training. As a Continental Institution, ACMAD may need to collaborate with RCCs (like ICPAC) to share advances in Climate Forecast with national participants. Develop manuals with expected outputs from procedures/routines. ACMAD should provide good and nice lunch during the training.
