How do I grow carrots? - Eco

If you are growing your carrots in a
pot, then choose a nice deep one, so
your carrots have room to stretch as
they grow.
4) Keep your seeds well watered
until they start to shoot, then
just water them when the soil
looks a bit dry.
Make sure your pot has some holes
in the bottom so that water can drain
out as well.
5) Let the plants grow until they
are as tall as your little finger
is long. Keep them watered

6) If your plants come up really
thickly then gently pull some
up so that there is a space as
wide as a ruler between those
left in the soil. Then give them
a really good watering.
Then what do I do?
Carrots are really fun to grow and
taste great straight from the earth.
Can you grow a really long one?
Where to plant?
In a sunny spot in well dug soil, or
why not try them in a pot.
What to do:
Take all the weeds out of the soil
and rake it flat. Then make some
grooves in the soil using a trowel.
1) Take a pinch of seeds from
the packet and sprinkle them
in to the grooves.
2) Cover your seeds with a little
bit of soil, not too much or
they might not grow.
3) Then give your seeds a really
good watering in, really soak
the soil.
7) Keep looking at your carrots,
when you think they are
ready, try pulling one up – if
it’s long enough then try some
more. If they are too small,
then leave them for a few
more weeks.
8) Enjoy eating them.

all the carrots grown were orange.
difficulty flying more than 45 cm
above the ground.
You can then stop them from
reaching your carrots using
horticultural fleece all the way round
your plants or try to grow them in a
raised bed or tall container that is at
least 50cm above the ground.
Once you have carrot fly in your
carrots, it can be difficult to get rid of
them. So if they are a problem you
could try growing some of the more
resistant varieties of carrots such as
’flyaway’.
Did you know…?
You can also grow really short and
round carrots, ideal for growing in
shallow containers.
What’s wrong with my carrots?
If your carrots are full of little holes
when you pull them up you’re your
carrots are suffering from Carrot fly
attack made by carrot flies.
So what to do about it?
Carrot flies are about half the size of
a normal house fly but they have
