Which Is Bigger?

Lesson 1 - God Gives Me Courage When I Am Afraid!
Which Is Bigger?
Small Group Activity
Purpose: This activity will help the children understand that God is bigger
and more powerful than anything that they may fear, and they can have
courage because God is with them.
Description: The children will choose between a series of two pictures to see which is bigger.
The size of the objects in the pictures will grow as the game continues.
Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this help sheet and the “Which Is Bigger
Pictures Lesson 1” from the Lesson Materials CD-ROM.
To introduce the activity say:
1. Recruits, I have a simple game for you to test your visual skills.
2. I am going to show you two cards. Each card will have a picture of an object. You must tell
me which of the objects is bigger.
3. We will continue until we discover the biggest object that we can find.
For detailed instructions on how to do the activities, see the DVD.
To lead the activity say:
1. When I show you the pictures I will hold one of them in each hand.
2. If you think the one in my right hand is bigger, you will go to that side.
3. If you think the one in my left hand is bigger, you will go to that side.
4. Recruits, ready? Which is bigger?
Note: Go through as many pictures as you have time for. When you are ready to close the
activity, skip to the “universe” picture.
5. That is correct. The universe is the biggest object we know of. Everything we have seen so
far is inside the universe.
After the activity say:
1. There is one thing that is bigger than the whole universe. What do you think that is? (God.)
2. We can have courage when we are afraid because God is bigger than anything we might be
afraid of and the Bible tells us in Psalm 16:8 “I know the Lord is always with me. I will not
be shaken, for he is right beside me.”
Closing statement: Sometimes the things we are afraid of seem very big and troublesome. And that may be true. But
we need to remember that no matter how big anything we are afraid of seems, it is small compared to God. Remember, if God
is bigger than anything we are afraid of, and He is right beside us, then we should trust Him to care for us when we are afraid.
