CONNECTIVITY Use the USB data cable provided to link your Swift to a USB port on your computer, as shown below. Once the data cable is plugged in, choose what you would like to do with your Swift. Charging It will take a moment to begin charging. You can continue to use your Swift if you have chosen to charge only. 51 Connectivity Connect to a computer to begin transferring data. You cannot use your device while it is connected. Your Swift will appear on your computer as a normal memory storage device. A few moments after connecting you should be prompted to open the Swift folders. If you are not prompted to open the Swift folder, you can instead find it in your computer’s file manager. The Swift folders will appear like this: CONNECTIVITY The items in these folders match exactly what is on your Swift. •To add a new item to your Swift, copy it into the relevant folder. •To move an item for safekeeping, copy and paste it to your computer. •To remove an item from your Swift, delete it from the folder. This cannot be undone! •Once you have finished, use the eject option on your computer to disconnect and update your Swift. Warning – make sure you use the eject option on your computer to disconnect your Swift before removing the data cable! 52 •Phrases Each individual phrase on your Swift is saved in a separate .rtf file in the Phrases folder. The title of each file contains some of the phrase text, to help you find the one you are looking for. Add new phrases by saving the text in an .rtf document and adding it to the Phrases folder, in the same way as notes. Warning – any files deleted from the Phrases folder will also be deleted from your Swift. This cannot be undone! •Notes Create or edit notes on your computer, and transfer them to Notebook on your Swift to speak them. You can also copy notes that you have created on your Swift to your computer for safekeeping. Any notes created on your computer should be saved in Microsoft Word 97-2003 format (.doc) or Rich Text format (.rtf) before being transferred to your Swift, and should only contain basic text. Pictures and font changes will not be displayed on your Swift. Warning – any files deleted from the Notes folder will also be deleted from your Swift. This cannot be undone! 53 CONNECTIVITY If you have created topics on your Swift, these will be shown as extra folders within the Phrases folder, and will contain copies of the phrases stored in that topic. Add new topics by creating a new folder and copying phrase files into it. •Sounds Add more sounds to your device to use in QuickSounds or as a Buzz sound. You can transfer audio files saved in .wav or .mp3 formats. You may want to add short recorded pieces of speech or other sounds which will help with your communication. Top Tip You may be able to store more sounds on your Swift by using the .mp3 format. The name of the sound file will be shown as the name of the sound on your Swift. Make sure that the name describes the sound to make it easy to find. CONNECTIVITY •Backups Create backups on your Swift to save all of your data in one file. These should be transferred to your computer for safekeeping, and can then be used to restore your Swift should anything go wrong. Warning – Backups will not save any sounds which you have added to your Swift. Ensure these sounds are also kept on your computer. 54 •Restore Should anything go wrong with your Swift, you can use your backups to restore all of your previous data. Alternatively, you can use the default backup in the Readme folder to return your Swift to ‘new’. Simply copy the backup you want to use into the Restore folder, and disconnect your Swift. Using Predictions from your Lightwriter SL40 Connect – You can replace the available predictions on your Swift with those from a Lightwriter SL40 Connect. This helps you to keep your communication aids synchronised. Simply take a recent backup from your SL40 Connect and transfer it to the Restore folder for your Swift. Warning – any predictions learnt on your Swift will be removed! •Readme This folder contains a full electronic version of this User Guide, and a default backup. You can use the backup to clear your Swift and restore it to the factory settings. 55 CONNECTIVITY Warning – everything on your Swift will be overwritten. It will also remove any backups you have stored on your Swift, so be sure to copy your backups to a PC before restoring from one. Cleaning and Maintenance Changing the Keyguard Keyguards can raise or lower the area around your keys. They can help to guide your fingers to the correct location and prevent accidental key presses. Your Swift is supplied with three keyguards of different depths. Top Tip The standard keyguard will already be fitted to your Swift. CLEANING & MAINTENANCE Standard Keyguard 56 Flush Keyguard Deep Keyguard You can change your keyguard in a few minutes. You may need someone to help with this if you find precise hand movements difficult. 2 1 Place your Swift on a table or flat surface and turn it off using Sleep on the Home Bar. 2 Undo the screw at the bottom of your keyguard using the screwdriver tool supplied with your Swift. 4 If any of the keys become loose when you remove the keyguard, simply press them back into place on the keyboard mat. Make sure they are level and seated securely; if they are not sitting correctly, try dampening the back of the key caps. 3 CLEANING & MAINTENANCE 3 Lift the bottom edge of the keyguard up, and slide the keyguard away from your Swift. If the keyguard does not lift up easily, use the keyguard release tool to push it up from the leverage point beneath the fixing screw. Be careful to avoid catching the joystick as you remove the keyguard. 5 5 Line up the new keyguard with the Swift keyboard, and slide the top edge in over the joystick. Gently push down the bottom of the keyguard, making sure all of the keys are placed correctly. 6 Replace the screw at the bottom of the new keyguard. 57 Cleaning the Keyboard If the keys or joystick become sticky or unresponsive, it may be that your keyboard needs cleaning. This should only take a few minutes. 1 2 1 Remove the keyguard and all of the keys from the keyboard mat and place them in some warm, soapy water. Warning - do not use cleaning fluids that contain alcohol or other strong solvents, as they may damage your Swift. CLEANING & MAINTENANCE 2 While your keys and keyguard are soaking, gently clean the keyboard mat using a damp cotton bud. Do not rub the mat too hard, as this may cause it to tear. Use as little liquid as possible, to avoid damaging your Swift. 3 Top Tip For details on how to remove the keyguard, see steps 1–3 of Changing the Keyguard. 3 Make sure that any dirt or residue is removed from the keys and keyguard, and that any liquid is removed from the keyboard mat. 4 Replace the keys onto the keyboard mat, and replace the keyguard as described in steps 5–6 of Changing the Keyguard. 58 Attaching a Lanyard To protect your Swift, you can use a lanyard to secure it around your wrist, neck, or shoulder. This can stop accidental drops and other damage. Your Swift is supplied with two lanyards of different lengths, and they can be changed in a few minutes. You may need someone to help with this if you find precise hand movements difficult. 1 Turn your Swift over and place it with the keyboard down on a table or flat surface. 2 Remove the screw in the bottom centre of your Swift using the screwdriver tool supplied. This screw fixes your lanyard in place. 3 Remove any attached lanyards. 5 Feed the doubled loop through the gap on the bottom of your Swift, making sure that there is enough room for the fixing screw. 6 Replace the screw, and pull the lanyard tight to secure your Swift. 2 4 5 6 59 CLEANING & MAINTENANCE 4 Double over the fixing loop at the end of the lanyard to increase its thickness. Strap Sets and Mounting If you find the Swift difficult to hold or use without extra support, there are kits available to secure it. •Strap Sets Top Tip Contact your local Toby Churchill product supplier for information on purchasing strap sets and mounting plates for your Swift. Strap sets let you attach thick elasticated straps to the back of your Swift, so you can fasten it to your hand, wrist, leg, or the arm of a chair. The straps can run on the back of your Swift from the top to bottom, or from left to right. •Mounting A mounting plate can be attached to the back of the Swift, allowing you to fix it to a wheelchair or mounting stand. This leaves your hands free to use the Swift keyboard.
