To strike back against the Federalists, the Jeffersonian Republicans went back to their “power base” – their state legislatures – and
responded with the following statement of “constitutional principles.” It came to be known as the “states rights” doctrine, and would
form the philosophical base for the secessionist movement of the late 1850’s which eventually led to the American Civil War.
