CASE STUDY 81% OF AT-RISK STUDENTS AT HOGG MS PASS THE 8TH GRADE TAKS AFTER INTENSIVE SECONDARY THINK THROUGH MATH CLASS HOGG MIDDLE SCHOOL, HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, TX Hogg Middle School identified a group of students at risk of not passing the 8th grade TAKS. After implementing an intensive, secondary math class using Think Through Math, 81% of these at-risk students passed the TAKS on the first administration. Percent of 8th Grade Students Passing TAKS THE PROBLEM During the 2007–2008 school year, 26 students at Hogg Middle School were determined at-risk of not passing the 8th grade Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). THE SOLUTION Engage these at-risk students in an intensive, one month Think Through Math program. During the 2007–2008 school year, Hogg Middle School, part of the Houston Independent School District, identified a group of students who were determined to be at-risk and likely not to pass the 8th grade TAKS. Hogg Middle School’s solution: create an intensive, secondary math class to help these students pass the 8th grade TAKS. The intensive, month-long program utilized Think Through Math for 90 minute sessions two to three times per week. Because of Think Through Math, 81% of these 26 at-risk students passed the TAKS on the first administration!
