Themes, Fonts, and Colors

Themes, Fonts, and Colors
Your site was originally set up beginning with a template called “Wintermint,” which was then
customized a bit. You can further customize the fonts and colors on the different elements of
your site using the instructions below.
In editing mode on your site, to access any of the items in the list below, go to the “Open More
Actions menu (m)” (looks like a wheel) and select “Manage site.” Then in the left-hand
navigation bar, select “Themes, Colors, and Fonts.” After changing any of the items below, click
the red “SAVE” button at the top, then click on your chapter’s site name at the top of the lefthand sidebar to view your changes. You also have a preview bar beneath these elements to see
how the changes look on your home page as you are going along before you save them.
One final note: Don’t be afraid to experiment – but make sure you know what your current
settings are and/or don’t click the red “SAVE” button if you are unsure. If you do make a
change you don’t like and aren’t sure what the setting was, just click “Cancel” at the top to go
back to the way your site was before you starting making changes.
Base Theme
 Near the top of the screen, you can see (if you haven’t changed it yourself at some point)
that “Wintermint” is the theme of your site. By using the up/down arrows beside the
theme name, you can make sweeping changes to your site’s appearance. Use this
feature cautiously, as you may end up drastically altering the way your site looks.
Make sure you want to do that before using this feature. There are also more themes
you can access using the “Browse more themes” button at the top.
Making individual changes
 An easier way to make small changes is to use the six links below your base theme area:
Entire page, Site header, Content area, Content area gadgets, Sidebar gadgets, and
Horizontal navigation.
 In each of these six areas, you can change many different elements – too many to list and
describe here – but by clicking on the name of an element, which highlights it in red, you
can see the options you have for that area. A brief description of what each element is
follows, along with a few of the basic features you can change in it.
Entire page
 As the name suggests, this is the area to use when you want to make a change that
happens to the whole page of every page of your site (not just to an individual element,
such as a navigation bar, the header, or the main content area).


Use this element to add, change, or delete things like the background color that shows
through on all your pages, as well as background images and text fonts, colors, sizes, and
link colors.
Please note, this is NOT where you would change the banner on your site.
Site header
 This is where you change the content in your site’s header area, which is where your
banner is located. This is the place where you can upload a new banner (as well as
change header background and title features). See “Uploading a New Banner to Your
Web Site” under the “Enhancing Your Site” section at www.iwla.org/webtips if you wish
to change your banner.
 Note that since banners for League chapter sites are 1010 x 200 pixels, if you are using
one and your site header width is set for 1010 and its height for 200, your banner will
cover up any background or title changes you make in this area. The exception to this is
if you are using a horizontal navigation bar, in which case if you change the site header
background, you are also changing the background behind the bar going across the page.
Content area
 Options here affect the appearance of content on the main part of your page – the part
where you type in most of the text of each individual page.
 A special feature of this section is the ability to set up header styles for use on your
pages.
Content area gadgets
 This area controls the features of special items you add to your pages, such as documents,
slideshows, videos, maps, list page headers, etc.
Sidebar gadgets
 This area is where you would make background, title, and text changes to your left-hand
sidebar’s appearance.
Horizontal navigation
 Similarly, this is where you would make change to your horizontal navigation bar – if
you have one.
 Different features from the left-hand sidebar include the ability to make changes to the
hover color and the dropdown menu’s feature (for subpages), as well as the spacing of
your items in the horizontal bar.
