I was amazed to realize that this has been my 7th Bible Camp, and I have
the T-shirts to prove it! This year’s theme was WAIT!---an Advent journey and
Christmas celebration. Our theme verse was from Isaiah 40.31 “Those who
wait for the LORD shall mount up with wings like eagles.” We created a camp
flag, made Advent candles, and in our Bible studies and worship and campfires
looked at the history of Christmas and Advent, the way God kept his promise
to come among us, that we may trust the promise of his coming again. We
chose a prayer partner for the week, and at our final worship exchanged gifts
we made for that person we’d been praying for. Every day was “sponsored” by
a letter:
W = welcome and walk
A = attention and always
I = include and invite
T = thanks and tell
There was incredible food, lots of games, lots of beach hikes and water
splashing and kayaking, lots of music, lots of sunshine. In the midst of running
and eating and crafts and singing, there are those breath-taking, unexpected but
hoped-for God moments that connect with kids, and makes camp such a special
and amazing experience. Camp is meant to be a fun and safe place to talk about
faith and God and Bible stories and prayer. When campers do make that connection (and they almost always do), they express it in ways that move and surprise us. Here is a letter left by a cabin group scribe, for the pastors:
“I will acknowledge the fact that what I am about to say is not directly
affected by the theme of camp: wait. However, I would still like to tell
you what everyone should know: Jesus loves you! He loves you so, so,
so much. Enjoy the rest of your day (and life) reveling in that knowledge.
We are happy to be the bearers of that news. God bless you, --Bear 4”
That, my friends, is the glory and the joy of camp. Thank you for your
prayers, your support, your encouragement, and your contributions to this
faithful, incredible, exhausting, and important ministry!
With joy,
Pastor Sue

STEWARDSHIP WORKSHOP
NEEDED!!
Saturday, October 18, 2014
Save the Date!!
Explore Biblical stewardship foundations and
learn specific tools and strategies around giving and generosity for you congregation with
ELCA Stewardship Director, Keith Mundy.
The quilters are putting together school bags to send
overseas. Seventy (70) spiral notebooks are all that
is needed to complete the bags. Please, no other supplies are needed at this time! Due to your previous
generosity there are enough other supplies for the
school bags. Thanks!
Keith will lead a workshop for lay folks
(Clergy welcome too) on Saturday, October
18, 2014 in Juneau, AK. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a leader on the ELCA
church wide staff. Please save the date and
join us for this inspiring and practical session.
GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS
September 25-29
RLC will host a God’s Work, Our Hands Mission trip
to Wrangell from September 25-29. The ELCA celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013 by encouraging
congregations to find ways to make a difference in
their local communities, wearing T-shirts that announce our presence and ministry. It was so successful, we’re doing it again! This year, RLC members
will undertake a first: a mission trip! Young, less
young, tall and small, we’ll join with the Island of
Faith community to work on projects there, sharing
work, meals, worship and fun! The ferry fare is $174.
If you are interested in participating, let Pastor Sue
know. If you are interested in helping to sponsor the
trip, donations are welcome!

A modified version of Amazon's description reads:
In 1973 16 year old Michael Travis accepted an
offer to help an older couple build a lodge at
Melozi Hot Springs--a remote camp north of the
Yukon River. Expecting a capable man, the couple
is shocked when they see a boy step out of the bush
plane. Michael proves his worth and learns quickly
this beautiful land hands out hard lessons. He gradually earns his place among his employers and becomes an Alaskan.

OUT AND ABOUT IN GOD’S WORLD
It was so good to see Nancy McMullen back from her "House Arrest" in Seattle. Though suffering a little
battle-fatigue from those surgeries and long-term chemo, she's here and smiling as ever. Thanks Nancy, you
are an inspiration to us all, showing how "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." May God give
you the continued strength to fight this successfully, along with the best of medical care and advice.
Nancy McMullen’s coworkers have put together a meal train with allows friends to sign up online to deliver meals in the coming weeks. To support Nancy and Mike through this ministry please contact Tisha Gieser by email, [email protected] for scheduling information.
Pastor Sue never ceases to amaze us with her ability to take whatever is in the red box that one of our
"Little-Lutes" brings in, and instantly develop a children's sermon that keeps them all mesmerized. Drew
McAdoo brought in a tiny toy Spiderman. Sure enough, not only a great children's sermon, but teaching
them that Spiderman's 3 fingers uplifted on each hand are the letters I,L,Y - or I love you - in sign language.
Drew couldn't wait until his Dad got home from work that day to flash I,L, Y at him with both hands
"Spiderman style" and then tell him what it really meant. It seems as if all the "Little-Lutes" in church can't
wait until RLC's next Saturday Morning Bible Camp.
Pastor Sue's beloved Chicago Cubs are currently 1.9% improved over the end of last year. If they can only
continue this rate of improvement, they could well be the American League Champions by 2021! Keep
cheering pastor, miracles do happen, and this one (at least statistically) just might happen in your life time.
If the plan is to make some sort of a rock garden at the RLC entry, from Pastor Sue's self-identification as
having a "brown thumb," and assuming this will be done with volunteer labor, let's "un-volunteer" Pastor!
Footloose and Fancy Free—Regular meetings will resume in September at Shepherd of the Valley. On the
second Tuesday of each month will be a 10 am coffee meeting usually with a program. The fourth Tuesdays
will feature noon potluck meals.
Do any of you watch the History Channel? Darrell Wetherall's Kodiak Brown Bear hunt last November with guide Mike Horstman was among the episodes featured recently in an eight week series titled The
Hunt. All of the featured hunts took place on Kodiak Island. Darrell's hunt with Mike took place in Kiliuda
Bay.
Julie and Jim Egolf from Saddlebrooke in Tucson, Arizona have been busy exploring Alaska this summer. They will be in Juneau from August 1-5 and are staying with Jim and Dot Wilson.
All baptisms are enjoyable events in church. The christening of baby Kendall was another such happy event
witnessed by relatives from the other side of the globe. Baby Kendall was robed in the same gown as grandfather Ken Koelsch was christened several score years ago. (That's less than "Four score and seven years
ago," however., and Ken is over a "score" away from that level of antiquity.)
Rumor has it that after a fishing lull of 46 years Ken Koelsch landed a 100 pound halibut on a recent fishing
trip. Congratulations Ken!
