Songs
Ms Whitney
The Gummy Bear Song (Each child got a turn exchanging the large penny for a gummy bear)
(Tune: "Six Little Ducks That I Once Knew")
Down at the candy store, what did I see?
Five little gummy bears smiling at me.
Along came child's name with a penny one day.
They bought a ____(red, green, yellow, orange) one and they took it away.
The Shape Song
(to the tune of: "The Farmer in the Dell")
A circle's like a ball, a circle's like a ball, round and round, it never stops, a circle's like a ball!
A square is like a box, a square is like a box, it has four sides, they are the same, a square is like a box!
A triangle has 3 sides, a triangle has 3 sides, up the mountain, down, and back, a triangle has 3 sides!
A rectangle has 4 sides, a rectangle has 4 sides, two are long, and two are short. A rectangle has 4 sides!
A closer look at some of our classroom activities
Everyday Math: Sorting by Shape and Size- Each child received a baggie with an assortment of
pattern blocks. Next, children sort out the blocks by shape (all square blocks are in one group, all
hexagons are in a another, etc.). After sorting blocks by shape, I model how to use pattern blocks to fill
in a pattern block template “like a puzzle.”
Bigger and Smaller Sort: Two trays are placed in the middle of our circle…one tray is for small items,
while the other is for large items. Next, each child is given 2 items. Children then place their two items
on the correct bigger and smaller trays. (Example: giant paper clip and small paper clip is
given to a student, he/she places the 2 paper clips on their corresponding tray “smaller” or “bigger”)
Art: Shape Pizza- Children create a shape pizza using a variety of paper pizza shapes. First we start
with a brown circle crust. Next we add rectangular shredded cheese, square green peppers, triangle
mushrooms, and circular pepperonis! Children use their creativity to build their pizza.
Theme: We read “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” as a whole group. Next, each child is given one colored
animal from the story. We read the story again, this time children come up and hold their animal when it
is mentioned in the story and we sequence the story together. Children are then given a brown bear
animal graph (with the different colored animals on the x-axis of the graph). Children are given a handful
of fruit loops (All colors of fruit loops represent a colored animal from “Brown Bear, Brown Bear”).
Children place fruit loops into graph as they match up the fruit loop color and brown bear character
color. Which color did they have the most of? Least? Enjoy your small fruit loop snack!
Zoo Phonics: This week we were introduced to Letter C and Catina Cat! We review A-B, and
introduce the letter Cc, catina cat, and catina cat‛s /c/ sound. We talk about words that begin with
C…one of them: Cookies! Children are presented with pretend oreo cookies (shape connector oreo cookies
for math activities) with letters written on them and 2 cookie jars…one saying “C” and the other saying
“A and B.” Children get one turn flipping over the cookie, stating which letter is written on their cookie,
then placing it into the C cookie jar or A/B cookie jar. Children practice tracing the letter C on the
Smart Board, then tracing the letter C on their tracing sheet.
