Skills Focus: To describe objects using colors
Objectives:
Introduce new vocabulary: colors
Review vocabulary from Lessons 1 and 2
Materials:
Coloring sheets, provided in this file
Construction paper
Large flashcards, (suggested) photos provided in this file
At least one deck of cards
Whiteboard
Dry-erase markers, one for each color
Preparation:
Most of the preparation for the class will be in making flashcards. Flashcards can be simply drawn to make them
more personal. Either clearly draw on construction paper or print a picture that is associated with each of the
colors from the list. Glue the drawing to (another, if necessary) sheet of construction paper to create a frame.
Review Card Game (5-10 minutes)
The focus of this activity will be on numbers. Students (and volunteers and parents) should around a table. Place
only the numbered cards (1-10) in a well shuffled pile (face down) in the middle of a table. Deal an even amount
of cards to each person. When the first student draws a card, he must say the number 1 (yi) in Chinese and then
place his card facing up into a discard pile. The next student will draw and say Chinese 2 (er), the third student 3
(san) and so on. When the number gets to 10 (shi), the count restarts. If a student draws a card whose number
matches the number of the count, then he collects all of the cards in the discard pile. Play until a student collects
all of cards or until they’ve had sufficient practice.
Number Exercise (5 minutes)
Make simple and silly exercises (for example jumping, turning around or lifting your right arm) that you can
associate with each number and, in the manner of Simon Says, have everyone do the exercise when you say the
number. Start by saying 1 (yi) and then doing the exercise, then 2 (er) and so on until ten. After this
Stoplight Game (5-7 minutes)
Make flashcards that resemble stoplights. Have the students continuously walk in a circle around the room
when the stoplight is green. When it is red, they should stop. When it is yellow they should walk slower and
slower until the light changes again. Make sure to repeat the color each time the stoplight changes.
Coloring Activity (10 minutes)
Use the provided coloring sheets and let students color the animals. If there are more than 10 students have
some students share the sheets with more animals. If there are less than 10 students give multiple sheets to
each student. Try to delegate the number of animals evenly. After the students are coloring ask them to count
each of the animals they colored and then say which color each animal is.
Drawing Activity (10 minutes)
Using dry-erase markers and a whiteboard, draw pictures. The instructor should pick something to draw, for
example an animal or a house. For each part of the picture the instructor should ask the students what color
they should use. Call on students individually and have them choose the color. If you’re feeling confident, let
them pick a color, say it aloud in Chinese and then draw their own piece of the picture.
Story (7-10 minutes)
Select a story that relates to colors and read it aloud to the class, making sure to point at the new vocabulary the
students might not recognize. Also, being very animated is key.
Assessment:
To assess the progress of students (and parents), the best method will be to ask them questions and listen to
their responses. Do not interfere immediately if they seem confused. In addition to this, watch how they play
the games and see if they can use the vocabulary while playing.
