PA NURSING HOMES FACE HARD TIMES
Nursing homes in Pennsylvania are “under attack.” These are the words from Ron Barth, President/CEO of LeadingAge PA,
our state association for non-profit nursing homes. Mr. Barth, a 40-year veteran in our industry, has “… never seen such an
out of control, purely punitive war on nursing facilities than what is now being conducted by the PA Department of Health
(DOH). ”
So what’s going on?
In 2015, the State Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Golden Living Centers for not fulfilling residents’ care needs. As a
result, the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) mandated that action be taken to
address concerns in all nursing homes. According to LeadingAge PA, the State Department of Health has taken this to a
point of being “out of control,” issuing severe penalties to nursing homes that have historically been in good standing. Many
nursing homes, including those in our region, have received “Immediate Jeopardy” citations, which are the most serious
violations possible. Immediate Jeopardy (IJ) means that a situation has occurred in which the nursing home’s
noncompliance has caused, or is likely to cause, serious injury, harm, impairment or death to a resident. IJ deficiencies are
accompanied by heavy fines and can be demoralizing, especially in communities like ours, where all departments are
committed to achieving the best care possible. Our HCC leaders are very confident in the care and services that our team is
providing, but are very concerned about the risks that we currently face due to these recent developments.
So what is our state association, LeadingAge PA, doing about this?
LeadingAge PA has joined forces with the PA Health Care Association (representing for-profit facilities) and the PA Coalition
of Affiliated Healthcare and Living Communities (representing County facilities) and engaged legal counsel to take a stand
against the actions taken by CMS and DOH. Legislators are also being lobbied to win support.
What does this mean for CKV?
Our Health Care Center has made tremendous progress under our new leaders, and our 2016 inspection results reflected
this progress. We recognize that our team is comprised of hard-working, dedicated, caring individuals. Nonetheless, we also
recognize that we are not immune to the current climate of harsh interpretations of regulations and resulting penalties. The
fact that our nursing home is very large increases the risk of DOH identifying areas of concern. Hopefully we will not face
what some of our colleagues are currently experiencing. However, we have previously been through difficult times in regards
to past inspections, and we have worked together to overcome these outcomes. If necessary, we will do so again.
What can YOU do?
If you work in Health Care, continue to do your best and support each other. We are blessed with devoted, skilled, and
compassionate team members that provide high quality care and services. We have a lot for which to be thankful and proud.
For all of us at CKV, support our leaders in Health Care. We are grateful for such exceptional people who are up to the task.
Your ongoing support and encouragement for them is most appreciated. Thank you all for your commitment and support as
we strive together to fulfill our mission.

Celebrating Years of Service at CKV
It is important to us to recognize team members who achieve years of service milestones. In
the past we recognized team members during an annual recognition dinner. Moving forward,
we are transitioning away from the annual recognition dinner to recognizing team members in
the month that they are celebrating their service anniversary milestones (i.e. 5, 10, 15
years, etc.)
The last annual dinner in May 2016 recognized those team members with anniversary
milestones from May 2015 to April 2016. Over the next two weeks, we will be catching up
with each team member who reached their years of service milestone from May 2016 to
February 2017. Then, starting in March 2017, we will begin the process of recognizing team
members who achieve 5, 10, 15 or more years of service during their anniversary month, providing a years of service
pin, monetary gift depending on years of service and a recognition letter presented by Human Resources and the Team
Member’s Manager.

Land Sale Complete
One of our corporate goals for 2017 included the acquisition of 15 acres of
farmland in front of the Harmony Ridge apartment building. I am pleased to
report that Cross Keys Village now owns this land. We will be integrating this
area into campus planning in the months ahead.

Dozens of Donated Roses
Kudos to Jason Stokes, owner of S & J Automotive in New Oxford, who
came to our Health Care Center last week with thirteen dozens of roses to
distribute to all lady-residents. This is a tradition that Jason started a few
years ago in other nursing centers, and his surprise visit was a huge hit in
our Health Care Center. You may read the whole story on our website.

Team Members Get ‘Heart Smart’ for
Valentine’s Day
The CKV Activities Committee celebrated Valentine’s
Day by coordinating an event in the Terrace Café
Lounge for Team Members. The festivities included
heart-healthy snacks, recipe cards, and educational
materials on heart health. Together they learned about
the importance of healthy habits and what they can do
(and share with their loved ones) to improve overall
cardiovascular health. What a unique way to celebrate
the holiday!

A retirement reception will be held for Gail Mummert, Personal Care

Value-Added Award Winner
Robin Pittinger, Village Housekeeper, was nominated by Jennifer Knight, Director of Village
Services for assisting another team member across the parking lot to ensure that she would
not fall on an icy morning. Robin’s concern for her colleague’s safety is just one example of
how our team truly lives the Core Values of Cross Keys Village.
We see those around us going “above and beyond the call of duty” regularly, and this is
your chance to recognize someone for doing so. Anyone can make a nomination. Forms
are found near the suggestion boxes or in the “Public” computer drive. Nominations may be
submitted via the suggestion boxes or directly to the Human Resources office. Nominations
should include specific examples of team members “living the values.”

Medical Benefit New Feature - Teladoc
If you enrolled in any of the CKV-TBHC medical insurance plans for 2017, you likely received a recent mailing
regarding a new feature, Teladoc. Teladoc provides you 24/7 access to a doctor via phone or online video for a $45
fee per visit.
Teladoc is not designed to replace your primary doctor but does offer new conveniences. For example, if it’s 3:00 a.m.
and your child has been up sick, now you can speak to a doctor through Teladoc versus having to wait until morning or
going to the emergency room. Would it be more convenient to speak to a doctor over your lunch break and perhaps
have a prescription waiting for you to pick up after work? You now have that convenience through Teladoc.
The Teladoc service is currently available to all medical benefit enrolled team members.
If you have further questions regarding benefits, please contact Human Resources.

Pastoral Care Intern
Did you know that our Pastoral Care team recently brought on the assistance of an intern? Andrew (Andy) Seidel
joined the Pastoral Care team at Cross Keys Village in October of 2016. Born in Washington State, Andy moved to
Southern Rhodesia (now the country is called Zimbabwe), Africa, with his family, where his father was a missionary for
four years. After living in Africa, Andy and his family returned to the US where his father served as a pastor and later as
a university professor. By the age of 15, Andy was self-supporting, living with his
older sister in Takoma Park, MD and attending his senior year in high school. After
high school, he attended the Washington Adventist Hospital School of Radiology
Technology. He used this career to earn his way through college majoring in
Business Management and Religion. Once his college education was completed, he
accepted a job as Employment Manager and was later promoted to Director of
Human Resources at a large hospital in Maryland. He later went on to graduate with
a MBA from the University of Baltimore and continued his 35 year career in Human
Resources, working at a large Jewish retirement center/campus in Rockville, Maryland and more recently at the St.
Luke’s Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. When Andy had the opportunity to retire early, he
decided to do just that and entered the Wellspan Health Network, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program so that he
could become a chaplain for those in the healthcare environment (something he had long wanted to do). Andy has said
that he feels very blessed to know and minister with residents and team members at Cross Keys Village. He is
completing most of his required clinical hours, for his CPE program, in the Health Care Center (Mission Point) and
thoroughly enjoys being part of the Pastoral Care Department.
A Letter of Appreciation and Thanks
The following is a letter of appreciation from a family with a long history at Cross Keys Village:
To Mr. Jeffrey Evans and Board –
A brief Krug history – Donald D. Krug’s parents, Paul W. Krug and Leah Krug, both resided at
Cross Keys Village before each passed away at the age of 100. Donald’s sisters, Gloria Krug
and Mary Kernekin, both own cottages on campus. Ted and Barbara Krug (whom also reside at Cross Keys Village) are
close friends of the family.
The experience starts with Tammy Kehr in the Admissions department where everything (and I mean everything) goes
smoothly. She is a valuable asset to the organization.
The transition to the Sun Valley neighborhood was as expected: smooth, pleasant, orderly, and compassionate because
of Catherine Merkey’s leadership and personal touch – another valuable employee at Cross Keys Village. From Trenton
Greenawalt in Community Life to all the caring and devoted employees: Thank you. In closing I would like to say – Don’t
Change a Thing!
Many thanks,
The Krug Family
(Bill Krug)
