MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hiring Top Talent
A successful company isn’t only made through flawless strategic planning,
cutting edge ideas, novel products and services, operational efficiency, great
advertising, or even a healthy balance sheet. Yes, these are elements of most
successful companies, but they are all driven by one critical asset, great people.
River City Bank’s financial results over the past several years have been excellent
and much of that is attributable to having great clients like you. At the same
time, I pride myself on finding the best and the brightest people to provide an
exceptional experience for our clients and to build shareholder value.
Stephen A. Fleming, President & CEO
“
...waiting for the right
person is generally
the very best course of
action as opposed to
“settling” on someone
who can fill the
position immediately.
”
So how do we find and secure top talent? Honestly, it is not an easy task. In
fact, it is a methodical, time consuming, arduous task that tries one’s patience
at times. This fact set is a hard pill to swallow for all of us because as business
owners and/or officers, we are impatient, Type A personalities. However, in this
instance, waiting for the right person is generally the very best course of action
as opposed to “settling” on someone who can fill the position immediately.
Here’s the process that we go through:
1. Get your team onboard – Your team may be just as impatient as you
are. You have to coach them into waiting for the great candidate instead of
settling for someone who can “do the job.” It’s going to be a rough patch for
awhile, but onboarding the great candidate will make everyone’s life easier
in the long run.
2. Evaluate the candidate pool – Sometimes great candidates don’t apply.
Keep your eyes and ears open. If there is someone you want, reach out and
start the courting process.

3. Perform personality evaluations – We use the Predictive Index (PI)
evaluation technique. There are no right or wrong answers. The PI strives
to identify the natural behavior of the individual for comparison against
the personality profile needed to be successful in a specific job. We believe
strongly that you want to get each member of your team in the right role for
them, doing what they do best.

4. Job testing – If the job requires writing skills, then have the candidate
complete a writing sample. If the job requires math skills, test for it. It’s
better to know what you’re getting before making a job offer rather than
finding out later.
5. Let the interviews begin! – Don’t just have one interview, have several.
The candidate should be vetted by not only you, but by others in the
organization at various levels and in various roles. Everyone in your
organization will have a different viewpoint on what will make the candidate
successful and whether or not there will be a cultural fit. In addition, this is
the time for the candidate to interview you and the team.
6. Ask for prior performance reviews – There is no better window into the
candidate’s work performance than to get input from their prior managers.
If they’ve worked for various companies, ask for reviews from each. More
than likely, you will see trends in their performance.
7. Perform reference checks – Evaluate the references they provide, but
also any that you garner on your own.
NorCal Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing held their
Annual Crab Feed Fundraiser on Saturday, February 8th at
the Dante Club in Sacramento. Guests were encouraged
to get dolled up in attire from the 1920’s. Their roaring
20’s themed fundraiser was sold out, and considered the
cat’s meow! They raised $23,651.50. Congratulations! For
more information about NorCal Services for the deaf, visit

8. Finally, be patient – Remember, you are embarking on a long term
relationship. Settling is NOT an option for you, your clients, your team, or
your shareholders.
There you have it, River City Bank’s recipe for hiring great talent to drive great
results. I wish you all the best as you search for top talent to drive your business
to greatness.*
