Others have won more championships in other classes, but he’s only the second to achieve 7 Unlimited Championships, and this is his first win in eleven years. Before this year’s win, he announced that he would be retiring from racing. Great way to retire! Condolences to the Sanders family who brought two Sea Furies to the Races and saw both blow up their engines. Ouch. The Races were marred by the death of one pilot, Erica Simpson, from Phillipsburg, NJ, in a practice flight Tuesday, during qualifying flights, before the Races began on Wednesday. The Heritage Flight, including a WWII P-38 Lightning (lower left), a WWII P-51 Mustang, and a cutting edge F-22 Raptor with stealth technology (upper right). Continued on page 2 Problems during Air Races? As reported by KTVN channel 4 – Residents near the Stead Airport are mixed when it comes to spectators watching the Air Races from their neighborhood. Silver Lake residents say spectators have been disrespectful to them and their property. SLPOA’s next Board Meeting: 3rd Wed of the month When: October 15 Time: 7:00 PM Where: Community Room at the Fire House, 11525 Red Rock Road In years past many neighbors we talked to say Air Race spectators have been double parking, camping illegally, setting up makeshift showers, and even leaving human feces behind. Residents recently met [with the] Washoe County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the Health Department, regarding code violations in their neighborhood. Kate Tangren was interviewed by KTVN. Regarding the problems in recent years, Kate stated, “I feel we have the right to keep our neighborhood safe from disease, from pollution, from being able to get out if we have an emergency, to being able to go to the store, to take our children to school. We have that right.” Camping out on the airport fence line to catch all the action. Championship Reno Air Races Cont’d. from page 1 My favorites, the T-6’s, made lots of noise as usual. With their dawn patrol flights each morning, they assured that no one in Silver Knolls would be sleeping in. The demonstration flights by the high-tech F-22 Raptors were most impressive. (These also made a lot of noise!) The Air Force Thunderbirds put on their usual awesome shows in the skies above the Stead airfield. Heritage Flights are becoming very popular at air shows and the Reno Air Races had one every day. It consisted of a P-38 Lightning, a P-51 Mustang and a F-22 Raptor. (See picture on page 1.) This is a chance for spectators to see WWII vintage aircraft flying in formation with modern day jet fighter aircraft. There’s been a lot of progress made in the last 60 years! The P-38 which flew daily at the Air Races has been named The Glacier Girl. It was recently restored to flying conditions after being buried in ice in Greenland for 50 years. It has the lowest flying hours of any P-38 in existence. Attendance at the event appeared to get off to a slow start on Thursday and Friday, but the grandstands were packed Saturday and Sunday. We’re all looking forward to next year’s event, September 16 - 20, 2009. See you there! T-6’s mid-race, coming around pylon number five, 400+ mph, about 100 feet off the ground. Fly Low - Go Fast - Turn Left! An Open Letter from the SLPOA Board Thanks to One and All for Another Successful Air Races Week! Thanks to everyone for their part in contributing to a stress-free week of Air Races. We started off a little rocky, but the community had a lot of good ideas and let us know what they wanted. As Board members, we are here for you, and it was helpful that so many residents came to the meeting in August to let us know their opinions and concerns. We appreciate your input and hope the increased attendance at meetings will continue. We also would like to thank all the Neighborhood Watch folks for their work. These people do this because they love their community and want to make a difference. Their work, and the signs, are paying off, and they contributed to the lack of problems in our community during the Air Races. www.silverknolls.org Last, and certainly not least, we would like to thank the Sheriff’s Department and all the deputies for their many years of assistance out here. This year, some residents asked that ‘No Parking’ signs be placed on parts of Osage. The signs were brought out on Friday as the residents had requested. The low key presence of the officers in the neighborhood was noted and appreciated – everyone deserves credit for a job well done. Please understand that this is a relatively new site and they still need to work out a few kinks, so please be patient. The website allows you access to different types of crimes that are happening by typing in a zip code. You are then able to narrow it down to certain types of crimes and access some information pertaining to the case. This may be limited information due to the fact that a case might be ongoing, but it will help keep you up to date on trends in your area. www.crimereports.com The Fusion/Tiburon System just went online in January here in the Reno area. This computerized crime stats system provides better intelligence, shared all around between different law enforcement agencies. Silver Knolls Recipes We are pleased to offer our fourth Silver Knolls Recipe, Sara Barden’s Broccoli Bacon Raisin Salad. This is savory stuff! I begged her for the recipe at a recent pot luck. 3/4 c.mayonnaise 1/4 c.sugar 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar 2 bunches broccoli cut into small pieces 1 lb bacon, fried & crumbled 1/4-1/2 c. minced onion 1 c. chopped celery 1/2 c hulled, unsalted sunflower seeds 1/2 c. raisins Mix first 3 ingredients. Mix next 6 ingredients. Pour dressing over salad and mix. Sara says, best to make it the night before and let it sit in the fridge while the flavors mingle. Serves 8 to 10. ______________ If you have a great recipe that you would like to share with your neighbors and friends, send it to the Newsletter Editor email to [email protected]. Behind the scenes our Silver Lake Volunteers were in quiet service to protect people and airplanes. We responded to the tragic crash of an aerial fire tanker. The crew of three died. We assisted by extinguishing the brush fire the burning aircraft caused. Another new firefighting vehicle is about to join our department fleet. A ‘water tender,’ carrying three thousand gallons of water, will soon be parked in the firehouse. It will carry water to fires where there are no hydrants. A third vehicle, a powerful new fire engine has arrived in town and is being prepared for service in Silver Knolls. The engine will join the two other brand new vehicles in service in the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Water Tender Currently the department is part of a drive to collect materials for composting from our yards. The dumping is free. One firesafe compost pile is at the Volunteer firehouse, the other is at Red Rock Rd. and Stampede Rd. Tree limbs, natural garden trash and wood products are OK, but no nails. Also, no garbage. The wood will be “chipped” and used as compost. Your neighbors/volunteers responded to 38 emergency calls during July, August and September. This list shows the variety of our calls: Vehicle accidents 5, Brush fires 3, Vehicle fire 1, Smoke check 1, Man the station 1, Public assist 1, Plane crash/ brush fire 1, Medical 25 (7 were criminal batteries) Guest speaker Rick Anderson of M&M Fire Company gave us a briefing on a wonderful tool called a Belt Weather Kit. It helps us predict weather through the use of instruments measuring humidity, temperature, dew point and wind speed. With the Kit, firefighters can forecast weather in different areas of a wildfire. Silver Lake Volunteers Dustin Roth and Nancy Madison were staffing our newest truck, Patrol 221, which is equipped to go out on all medical calls. Recently they gave aid to a man suffering from a diabetic attack and he recovered. 221 is a ‘first out unit’ and will also be used for brush fires. Neighborhood Watch This is the third in a series of columns by Deputy Sheriff Teresa Aquila, our Neighborhood Watch liaison with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The good news is that crime in our Silver Knolls area has dropped and has remained low, compared to a year ago. Staying active in your Neighborhood Watch program is not only important to Law Enforcement, but to your community as well. It has proven over the last several months that the Neighborhood Watch groups have helped Law Enforcement apprehend several subjects. The following are just tips to help keep you safe. • Know your surroundings. www.silverknolls.org Our members are constantly working to increase their abilities in service to the department. Chief Pete Rucinski and Firefighter Dustin Roth are working on training for certification as instructors, while Dale Hildebrandt and Dave Walizer are working for certification in Entry Level Firefighting and Emergency Medical Technician. • The holidays are coming up, make sure your purchases are out of sight in your car. • Park in well lit areas. • When unloading at home, do not leave your trunk open with your purse or other items in it. We have had a few incidents where items were taken when the individual went into the house to unload, with the trunk open, unattended. • When placing the cartons from your newly purchased items for trash pickup, make sure you break them down so as not to advertise what you just got for Christmas. Thieves will be making a shopping list. The area Neighborhood Watch patrollers have been doing an outstanding job to help keep your area safe. Our next meeting will be held October 21, at 6:30 p.m. Granite Hills Baptist Church. Hope to see you there. page 6 Red Rock North Chapter of the Nevada Fire Safe Council us your Christmas tree after the holidays. (Please, no household trash.) Feel free to bring Horse Sense Now is a good time to pull out your horses’ blankets, clean them and repair any damage, or order something new and warm for the coming winter. While you’re at it, check the horses’ water tub and warmer that keeps the water from freezing. To save money, be sure to insulate the bottom of the tub so that you aren’t warming the ground, too. Something as simple as a piece of styrofoam under the tub will help with this. Heating a smaller volume of water will also keep costs down. Having heated water available to horses in the winter will keep them drinking normal amounts and will minimize potential colic problems due to inadequate hydration. Also, be sure to provide adequate daily hay roughage, and a psyllium based product, such as ‘Sand Clear,’ for a week each month, to prevent sand colic.
