expatriate staff and 43 teachers work with an employment contract based on French contracts with the French
government.

6. What makes FIS unique?
Created, owned and run by parents, FIS is the only accredited French school in HK (linked by an agreement
with the Agency for French Teaching Abroad, AEFE).
3 learning options (2 streams + OIB)
IS follows the UK National curriculum until Year 11 leading to the IGCSE (University of Cambridge
International Examinations) and then to the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Year 12-13
FS follows the French National curriculum and offers the OIB option (American section)
The school delivers a multi-cultural educational experience by blending the best of French,
international and local perspectives
Unique and bilingual environment focusing on language learning
Over 90% of students are bilingual/trilingual when they graduate from FIS
French-English bilingual classes starting from Moyenne Section (age 4)

7. Expansion projects
7.1 Number of students
Following the “open door” policy, FIS has managed to welcome all French students in the last 50 years.
Students’ number have increased by 40% in 10 years.
Population is expected to grow from 2,700 this year to 3,225 by 2020.
7.2 Current situation
Expected date of opening of new campus in Tseung Kwan O: September 2018.
Two streams: - French stream: up to 3 classes depending on Year Group from Moyenne section to
3ème
- International stream: up to 2 classes depending on Year Group from Reception to
Year 5
Maximum capacity: 1050 students.
Extension of the BPR campus to offer new classrooms and improve the overall facilities: currently
being reviewed.

9. Governance
FIS is a charitable institution linked by convention with the Agency for French Teaching Abroad
(AEFE), a network of 500 schools under the umbrella of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Board is responsible for leading the strategic direction of the school and providing the best
environment for finance, human resources, legal and development. It meets formally six to eight times
a year and in the interim works in committees.
Each committee is headed by a Committee Chairperson, who can call on outsiders and volunteers to
join the Committee or work on a specific taskforce.
10. History milestones
1963/64: FIS started with only 30 students when technicians and engineers from French companies
came to Hong Kong to build the Shek Pik dam on Lantau Island
1973: FIS was the 1st international school to offer Mandarin classes
1984: FIS started to offer the International Stream and established a new campus in Jardine’s Lookout
1988: FIS was the 1st international school to be authorized as an IB World School
1999: Opening of Blue Pool Road Campus
2011: Opening of Chai Wan Campus
2014: Opening of Hung Hom Campus
2015: HK Government grants Tseung Kwan O site for new campus development – due to open in
September 2018
11. About the French community in HK
11.1
Growth of the community
The French population has more than doubled since 2006. The French Population today is around
20,000 (estimated by the French Consulate General in HK).
The growth of the French community in Hong Kong is in line with the growth of Hong Kong’s economy
and, more generally, booming Asian markets to which Hong Kong, as a trade and financial center,
offers very easy access.
The French communities in HK & Singapore are the largest in Asia.
11.2
Latest trends
French families are staying longer in HK: according to a survey realised in 2014 in which 32% of FIS
families participated, 53% of French families expressed that they plan to stay in HK for more than 5
years.
Increasing number of French nationals working in HK with local contracts.
French families / young talents move to HK mainly for work and business opportunities.
International marriage – more bi-cultural families are formed with one of them being a French national.
