Letter from the Presidents
Dear Club Members;
I have great news to relay to you at this writing: the fulltime equivalent
membership has reached 383 after the excellent results of this year’s
membership drive; an increase from 364 members from this time last year
and an increase from 337 at the low point in early 2010. Now please
do not relax and say that the worst is over since we need to be in excess
of 400 before we can begin the next phase in the club’s growth vis a vis
capital spending and refurbishment. But, we have made progress. We
are encouraged by the new members who are enjoying the club and look forward to their continued contribution
as we approach the fall and winter. Please welcome all that you encounter on the club campus and, as you know,
you are the Club to them and the reason that they are with us.
It has been reported that we are experiencing some usage by non-members of the club as well as usage by adult
dependents of current members. We remind all of the by- laws of the Club that limit or prohibit the use of the Club
facilities for non- members. Please follow the rules which stipulate that eligible dependents are only spouses and
children under 21living at home (25 for full time college students).
Bench Installation and Dedication: I hope that you have seen the handsome teak benches that have been placed
around the course. Due to the excellent efforts of Jef Glenn and her house posse, the golf course grounds have
now been graced with 11 benches on beautifully landscaped sites in honor of several long time members. The
benches have been funded by their family members and were dedicated appropriately on Father’s Day at a ceremony on the grounds followed by an excellent lunch prepared by Chef Gil in the club house.
Pool Season and Swim Team Competition: The pool is now open and the season is off to an excellent start and
seems to have a new life with all of the new younger set enjoying the scene. Holt Humphries and the GCC team
are off to a good start, and the visiting teams seem to enjoy the food service, new sound system, and enhanced
furniture.
Social Activities: The club house has been busier of late with several large events and weddings. As a first for the
club, we hosted a wedding on the grounds between holes 1 and 9 that was a very successful event. For the July
and August periods, the club will offer exciting and varying menus at the 19th hole. Your Social Committee has
been very active in planning events that you have suggested and are eager to meet your requests for functions
that you support.
I also remind you of the revised Dress Code Policy that is now more explicit in determining acceptable dress in all
rooms and areas of all of the Club property. Please be mindful of the code as you attend events at the club. The
appropriate code will be tagged on each event as well as in the web site so that all can be prepared with appropriate dress for any event at the Club.
Golf: The course is in excellent condition again this year due to the excellent efforts of Chris Parham and staff. Both
the Member Member and Member Guest tournaments were huge successes. We also sponsored the David Garrard and Beau’s Buddies charity golf tournament that attracted a number of NFL and PGA pros, including Greenville’s Will Mackenzie as well as a larger gallery of visitors to our course.
Lastly, this is a joint letter from both Ben Parrott, who will be your President beginning next month, and me. Please
extend your welcome and thanks to Ben as he leads the club for the next years. I will continue as Past President and
offer support as required in the coming years. I have to say that my years as your President have been most rewarding, as well as challenging, as we explored the possible expansion opportunities for GCC. My special thanks to the
Boards and Past Presidents that I have served with and specifically to Will Davis and the excellent staff at GCC, from
Connie and Amy in the office to Brady, Chris Parham and to Chef Gil.
I wish all well for an enjoyable summer season and as always, if you have comments, questions, or suggestions,
please contact either Ben, Will Davis, or me.
B. J. Myers/ Ben Parrott
