Kendal futures parking proposals - South Lakeland District Council

Car Parking Task and Finish Group
Purpose: Review the Kendal Futures Board car parking priorities and
develop from them 3 – 4 concrete proposals which can be progressed.

Final proposals/recommendations – December 2014
1. New Road car park development (SLDC)
SLDC to prioritise the redevelopment New Road to provide an attractive, landscaped area for:
• Coach parking with pick up and drop off points
• Cycle storage facilities
• A safe route to link the existing cycle paths.
2. New car park development (SLDC)
SLDC to provide alternative low cost, edge of town parking on part of Beezon Fields as an
alternative to New Road for local workers and employers.
3. Employee/employer parking (SLDC)
SLDC to offer alternative low cost, long stay employee parking spaces on the lower floor of the
Westmorland Shopping Centre using a permit or card system.
4. Park and Walk/Cycle Scheme (SLDC)
• Encourage lower priced parking options at locations on the edge of town including K
Village and the Leisure Centre
• Provide safe and secure cycle storage and facilities at the Leisure Centre and in the town
centre
• Sign, map and promote the safer cycling routes and health benefits.
5. New car park development (Cumbria County Council)
• CCC to run a trial car parking scheme on the land behind County Hall, operating long and
short stay parking at a lower cost then the town centre car parks and including provision
for coaches
• Longer term to encourage the development of a purpose built, decked car park on the
land.
Other short term actions for SLDC
•
Actively promote Kendal Leisure Centre for coach parking (on a paid for basis) if K Village no
longer need to use the site to meet their 106 obligations.
•
Provide motorhome specific parking bays at Sandes Avenue and Kendal Leisure Centre with
power for overnight stops.
•
Remove permit holders from Dowker’s Lane and investigate alternative parking provision for
permits with the Parish Church (Kirkland Hall) or K Village.
•
Widen the bays (convert 3 bays into 2) to on the top floor of the Westmorland Shopping
Centre car park to entice people to choose to park there due to ease of use.
