BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
Introduction
Water boils at 100˚C. Not 90 ˚C; not 95 ˚C; not 99 ˚C; and not 99.99 ˚C. It
has to be 100˚C or 212˚F. Like water, we have everything we need. We
are on the fire but just below 100˚C. That is why we are not bubbling
over. We are not steaming. Hot water changes whatever it comes into
contact with. We are hot but not hot enough.
The water under 100˚C describes many believers and generally the
Church today. Things seem set to work-the sound, the building, the
worship team, and the preacher. Just one thing is badly needed i.e. the
Holy Spirit. His power, presence and manifestations are missing in many
lives, homes, and churches. Billy Graham says, “Ninety-five percent of
today’s church activities would continue if the Holy Spirit were removed
from us. In the early Church, ninety-five percent of all her activities
would have stopped if the Holy Spirit were removed.”
Unlike the Church today, the Early Church relied on the Holy Spirit in
the execution of its mandate. Whether in personal lives, home
fellowships, and church gatherings the power of the Holy Spirit was
evident. I yearn for this power. I long for the manifestation of the Holy
Spirit.
The Holy Spirit here is not about those gymnastics do. It is not about
drinking olive oil and smearing your face every morning before work.
He is not soil from Israel and water from River Jordan. He is not a

manipulative tool that preachers use to con, swindle, and steal from
congregants.
Let us take some time and discuss the place of the Holy Spirit in the
daily life of a believer.
Acts 19:1-6
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior
and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them,
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered,
“No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul asked,
“Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied.
Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the
people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On
hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When
Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they
spoke in tongues and prophesied. Why was the Holy Spirit necessary for
the believers to the extent that Paul would ask them about it?

The Work of the Holy Spirit
1. The Holy Spirit plays the role of the Comforter and Guide for the
believer – “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going
away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you . . . But
when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the
truth” (John 16:7, 13 NIV).
2. The Holy Spirit teaches us who Jesus really is - “I still have many
things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when
He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth … He
will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you”
(John 16:12-14).
“The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name,
He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
things that I said to you” (John 14:25-26).
3. Being filled with the Holy Spirit produces a sense of peace and
joy in the believer – “And the disciples were continually filled with
joy and with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 13:52)
For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness
and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17)

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”
(Romans 15:13)
4. The Holy Spirit gives us strength and help in our fight against sin
- “…you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit … But you shall receive
power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:5-8).
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh …
those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”
(Galatians 5: 16-25).
5. The Holy Spirit brings conviction to the sinful world - “convict
the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment”
(John 16:7-11).
6. The Holy Spirit helps us produce the fruit of victorious Christian
living in our lives. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol” (Galatians 5:22-23).
7. The Holy Spirit empowers us in prayer - “And the Holy Spirit helps
us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us
to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groaning that cannot
be expressed in words” (Romans 8:26).
8. The Holy Spirit gives you ability to discern and confront evil
powers – “But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means)
opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. Then
Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked
straight at Elymas and said, “You are a child of the devil and an
enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit
and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the
Lord?” (Acts 13:8-10)

HOW DO I GET FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?
First, Repent, seek and receive forgiveness for all sin by reliance on
the completed work of Jesus Christ on the cross - Acts 2:38 - And
Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the
name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Second, Desire to be fully controlled by the Holy Spirit – Acts 6:3
Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full
of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them
Acts 7:55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and
saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Third, Claim the promise of God that he will reveal himself and fill
your life with His Spirit – Acts 2:39 The promise is for you and your
children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will
call.” Luke 11:13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give
the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Fourth, Receive the Holy Spirit by faith – 1 John 5:14, 15 This is the
confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything
according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—
whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Fifth, Continually be filled with the Holy Spirit - Acts 2:4 All of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as
the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was
shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word
of God boldly.
Ephesians 5:18 – “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.
Instead, be filled with the Spirit” – continually be filled with the Spirit.
It is not a onetime event but repetitive.
Conclusion
Your ability and that of the church to change the world today depends
on how much we shall embrace the Holy Spirit and allow Him to control
our affairs. The Holy Spirit’s power is what we need today. In prayer, in
worship, in reading the Word, in preaching, as spouse and as parents;
we need the Holy Spirit.
He alone brings the supernatural. He alone brings signs and wonders.
He alone changes ordinary people into extraordinary people. He is the
missing ingredient in the life of believers today. We all need Him back in
our lives. We need Him in this country, homes, schools, and
everywhere…yes everywhere. He alone makes the difference between
Christianity and other faiths. If we must see the message of salvation has
to penetrate the religious, wicked, and godless world we are living in,
the power of the Holy Spirit must be seen.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is beyond speaking in tongues. The gift
of speaking in tongues is great gift that gives a prayer language. The aim
however, is not to seek the gift but the Holy Spirit Himself. This is wind
you need for your sails, the spark for your fuel, and the rails for your
train. It is the 1˚C you need to get the 100 ˚C and bubble over.
“What the Church needs to-day is not more machinery or better, not
new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy
[Spirit] can use [people] of prayer, [people] mighty in prayer. The Holy
[Spirit] does not flow through methods, but through [people]. He does

not come on machinery, but on [people]. He does not anoint plans, but
[people], [people] of prayer.” E.M. Bounds
