The clocks have gone back, dusk comes early, and the season of mist and mellow fruitfulness fades as the last of the leaves fall to the ground. The days close in and with them the memories. November could be called a maudlin month, given over to St Nostalgia, with All Saints, All Souls and Remembrance Day encouraging us to relive our former days. I always approach autumn with mixed emotions. The early weeks of autumn are one of my favourite times of the year, but there is also a note of sadness. The warmth of summer is but a memory; the fields once vibrant with crops are now stripped bare and the trees stark grey skeletons against rain-laden sky. A few weeks ago we met up with friends on the shore of Lake Windermere - the day was mild, the sky was deep blue, and the hotel where we had lunch had large orange pumpkins piled high on both sides of the entrance doors; this was autumn in all its glory and if only it could stay like this for ever. I didn’t want things to change, but realistically we know that things will change. Everything has a beginning and an end. Flowers die, leaves turn brown and fall, and beauty fades. As much as we would sometimes like for things to remain as they are, we know they cannot. Children grow up and leave home. Parents grow old and pass away. The physical beauty or handsomeness we knew as young adults fades - just a little. A job is phased out or it comes time to retire from that profession that was so loved. A good friend moves away. Change is all around us and most of us find that difficult. The lesson of autumn is change - which is central to the cycle of life. The sooner we come to understand that lesson the better and more helpful it will be for us. This cycle of seasons is imprinted on the year, the very earth and all creation. It’s a cycle of dying and rising again, of losing and finding. The opportunity that autumn holds for us is to enjoy the beauty of each day. For no two days are exactly alike; the sky will be different tomorrow. The wildlife we see will be different. Even the leaves on the trees will all be different as colours change overnight. Each day is a fresh invitation to cherish the moment as a gift from God. Every day holds its own peculiar blessing and aspects of wonder to be entered into - appreciated with a spirit of gratitude. Though we often think of natural beauty in the season, there are other beauties of life that we can take note of and be grateful for throughout the year—the smile and laughter of our children or grandchildren; a meaningful conversation with a good friend; a thoughtful gesture by someone we meet during the course of our day. Take time to stop, reflect, and learn the spiritual lessons and wisdom which each season of life holds. Watch the leaves turn, the sun set and the geese flying overhead. And thank God for the gift and opportunities of each day as well as the natural splendour with which we are surrounded. And know that when winter finally does come, spring can’t be far behind. “Lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flower appears on the earth; the time of the singing of the bird is come, and the voice of the turtle dove is heard in our land.” Song of Solomon 2: 11-12 Every blessing, Revd Linda SUPPORT OUR LOCAL ADVERTISERS - TO BOOK SPACE CALL KEN 015395 63286 or JOHN 015395 62648 OLIVE TREE EATERY MOSSDALE SERVICE STATION Off Licence now open - Wines & Beers Petrol, Car Wash, Vegs., Grocery, Snacks Hot & Cold Drinks, Papers, National Lottery MILNTHORPE 015395 63233 Open daily 8am - 5.30pm Breakfast delivery service Extensive gluten free menu KINGFISHER RESTAURANT 01524 - 781381 BED AND BREAKFAST L. Arriving late morning gave some free time in Carlisle to attend the Cathedral Eucharist or spend some time in the museums or shops, before meeting for lunch at Tullie House Museum Restaurant A short service and fun activities for young families (2-6 year olds) and the young at heart! Refreshments ~ juice & snacks The Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols will be held on What’s coming up November Work Parties Thank you to Beetham Parish Council for their generous donation of £500 for bulbs for the churchyard, and to Dallam Estate and Beetham Nurseries for helping the church to source the appropriate varieties of bulbs There will be two work parties to plant these bulbs, from 10am on 5th and 7th November. Please join us on either day to help make a spectacular Spring display Pop in for coffee & cake! Next coffee morning Wednesday 5th November 10.15am to 12.00 Join us in church for Beetham Village Coffee Morning on the first Wednesday of each month (except January) What’s been happening Sunday 21st December at 6.30pm In the afternoon, a full guided tour of the Cathedral had been arranged and it was a fascinating insight into it’s development. Begun in the same century as Beetham Church, Carlisle was one of only four Augustinian churches to become a cathedral in England. The barrelled chancel ceiling is beautifully painted and the magnificent East window was pointed out as the largest ‘flowing decorated Gothic’ window in England CHIMES ~ ‘A Grand Day Out’ Towards the end of the tour, some members were also given a special opportunity to climb 117 spiral steps and walk along the clerestory level above the chancel to reach the ringing chamber, then more steps up to the bell chamber housing 13 ringable bells and 5 older bells for chiming Following the tour further free time enabled people to either look round Tullie House Museum at the chequered history of Carlisle as a Border town, or enjoy some shopping and relax over a cup of tea The day ended with Choral Evensong, sung by the Carlisle Cathedral Youth Choir. Then a coach trip back in the rain completed our Parish Grand Day Out... Bygone Beetham St Michael & All Angels, c.1895 The headstone on the far left is no longer there and the ‘table’ gravestone has been lowered to ground level. Within 10 years the pergola had been built and roses were cascading along this pathway A new website for St Michael & All Angels is currently under development, giving details of the church, what’s on, The Gateway online, and much more! Look out for further details next month In the meantime for latest details of forthcoming events and services go to www.achurchnearyou.com/beetham/ Or use your mobile to go direct to the A Church Near You Beetham webpages A Harvest Much Ado About Nothing The year is 1584 at The Globe Theatre, Stratford upon Bela, owned by the infamous Shylock. Bill Wobblesword - later to be known as William Shakespeare - is a young playwright at the time and sees the Globe as a means to promote his plays. But Bill has sent his apologies for the evening… The scene was set for the Harvest Supper on 3rd October in the Heron Corn Mill Barn. In tribute to Sandy Lofthouse, who was keen to direct his own interpretation of Hamlet (Thelma), a Shakespearean theme was chosen for the evening. In the absence of Bill, Shylock was forced to run the ’Bard’s Bingo’ himself but this was continuously interrupted by strolling players wanting to try out new acts. But the presence of 8 witches in MacVitie (later renamed Macbeth), 4 Gentlemen on the Phone -er, and an abridged Hamlet proved to be too much, culminating in a pound of flesh (or sausages) being awarded to the winner of the Bingo PAGE 4 Beetham Church has a strong choral tradition, with a robed choir at both Morning Service and Evensong If you are interested in joining please contact Margaret Cutress on 015395 62858 If you live in the parish and would like to arrange a baptism or wedding at St Michael & All Angels please contact Revd Linda On Sunday 19th October we were delighted to welcome Revd Philip Barber back to Beetham to lead our Friends Sunday Parish Eucharist, followed by the Friends of Beetham Church AGM and Lunch Phil and Anne joined many of the Friends at the Heron Corn Mill Barn for an excellent traditional roast beef Sunday lunch, a catch-up on what has been happening in Beetham Parish, and a look ahead at the challenges— and fun—in fundraising plans for the next year. Proceeds from the raffle were donated to Beetham Church Heritage Trust Do you enjoy singing? Rehearsals will shortly begin for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, under the musical direction of Charles Edmondson, and we would welcome additional male and female voices in the choir Max James Shaw son of Mark & Katie Shaw was baptised on Sunday 12th October Friends Sunday There is no charge and all are welcome Beetham Church Website Baptism A grumpy Shylock & Ye Mistress of Music Margaret watch Hamlet, The Merry Wife of Windsor, A Comedy of Errors, and the Witches of MacVitie making octuple toil and trouble Thanks go to John & Dianne Lomax and Harry & Ann Parrott for organising the event and scripts, Margaret Cutress for the musical direction, Alison Thompson for the catering, and to the numerous people involved as thespians, wenches, scene shifters, and unsuspecting audience PAGE 5 School Corner As I write this edition of School Corner we are all looking forward to our half term holiday after a very busy but exciting start to the school year. Our Harvest Service was led by Rev Linda and attended by many parents and friends from the village. We collected a huge amount of gifts for Manna House, the homeless shelter in Kendal, which are being used to help with the ‘Winter Shelter’ that they provide. The children made their own bread models and these were displayed in church and are now in our school entrance. Some of our families also attended the Harvest Family Service in church where the children shared information about their favourite breads and how they like to eat them. We are very lucky in school that we have a group of parents who are willing to come in and cook with our children on a Friday morning. They make a wide range of foods and in this picture the KS2 group have made spring rolls. These are then shared with everyone in school so that the children have the opportunity to try different foods and learn about the ingredients. One of the highlights of the half term was a day’s canoeing on Windermere for our KS2 children. We caught the ferry at Ferry Nab and then walked around the lake path where we met our instructors. The children had some basic paddling training and then we set off in our rafted canoes to paddle out to one of the islands. Here we explored, set up camp and made pizzas which we had with our packed lunch. We then set off back down the lake where we played some fun games which ended with all the children swimming and playing in the water. This was such a fantastic experience for everyone and made us realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place where activities like this are so readily available. Best wishes, Wendy Nicholas How many Breads can you find? During the week events are held all over the country by Prison Fellowship, a volunteer-driven organisation who seek to help, support and develop a Christian ministry to prisoners and their families. Prisons are supported by their local churches by way of a prayer group, or by volunteers who go into the prison to help with a crèche, visitor’s tearoom rota, Restorative Justice courses, writing letters to individuals or simply visiting an offender who is far from home or has been disowned by their family One such Prison Fellowship initiative is Angel Tree. For many years coffee mornings in Beetham have annually raised over £700 to buy Christmas presents for children whose parents are in prison. Prisoners with access to their children can apply for a gift via Angel Tree. Children delight in receiving a gift from Mum/Dad and Angel Tree is a wonderful way of maintaining a link between parent and child separated by prison As we live out our lives in this beautiful area, give a thought to those less fortunate than ourselves. This winter, Angel Tree events are being held in Clapham.
