General Sherman General Grant General Sherman was born in 1820 in Lanchester, Ohio. He went to West Point College and became general of Union troops. He fought in the Mexican War, served as colonel in the first battle of Bull Run and won. He was the leading general of Union troops along with Grant. When he heard that the enemy was in Kentucky, he said that if he had 60,000 men, he would drive the enemy out of Kentucky, and if he had 200,000 men, he would win the war right there in General Grant was born in 1822. When the Civil War broke out, he was working in his father`s leather store in Galena, Illinois. Grant went to West Point College, and fought in the Mexican War as 2nd lieutenant. When he became a general for the Union, he captured Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donelson in 1862. In the Battle of Shiloh, he fought with General Sherman and they won. Along with General Sherman, they both fought to capture Vicksburg Mississippi, and they broke the Confederacy in two. All of the Southerners called Grant “The Butcher”. Grant drank when he was bored or lonely, and he was drunk a lot. His famous phrase was, “When in doubt, fight”. He met the girl of his life, Julia Dent, and they got married on August 22, 1848. They had three sons and one daughter. In March of 1864, he assumed command of all Federal Kentucky. From NovemberDecember he led his famous “March to Sea”. This was when he led his troops through Georgia covering 60 miles of destruction by burning cities to the ground. He practically burned Atlanta, Georgia to the ground. He fought for Grant in the battle of Shiloh, and helped Grant capture Vicksburg, Mississippi. He attacked Bragg`s Army in the battle of Chattanooga. After the war, everyone wanted Sherman to run for president, but he said,”I will not serve if elected, and I will not accept if chosen.” General William Tecumseh Sherman died of pneumonia and a stroke in 1883. Armies. He defeated Lee`s Army in the Battle of Cold Harbor in Virginia. After the war, Grant became president. General McLellan General McLellan was born on December 3, 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to West Point College as did Sherman and Grant also. He also fought in the Mexican War too. McLellan ran against Lincoln in the presidential race, but obviously he lost with 12 votes and Lincoln got 212 votes. When Lincoln became president, he put McLellan in charge of the Army called the Potamac, or the “Little Mac”. With his troops in 1862, he led them to Richmond, Virginia, but failed to do so. Even though McLellan had more men than Lee, he did not succeed to win many battles because he wasn`t quick enough. He stopped Lee`s Army in the Battle of Antietam. Lincoln replaced McLellan in 18 because he did not follow the retreating troops from the battle. He died on October 29,1885.
