You will be receiving log in information in class and we will be signing on for the first time together in class.
GRADING POLICY:
Your grade will be based on the following:
10% : homework, group work, participation
90% : tests, quizzes, graded individual assignments, projects
•
•
•
•
Homework will be assigned daily and late homework will only up to the day of the test for that unit
In-class assignments will be done in groups, which I will assign, or individually depending on the assignment.
Tests/quizzes (one or the other) will be given about once a week.
I RARELY GIVE EXTRA CREDIT SO DON’T ASK!!!!
Math Department Re-‐Testing Policy (Updated April 2012) •
Students will be permitted to re-‐take two formative assessments per quarter in all level two classes. The criteria for a re-‐take will be that the student attempted all of the assignments for the content that is being assessed. It will be at the discretion of the teacher as to when re-‐takes will be allowed such as after school, during teacher study halls, or in class, but all re-‐takes must be completed in a single sitting and not spread over several periods. Students will not be allowed to complete the quizzes during a class period in which the teacher is responsible for instructing another class. Re-‐takes will need to be completed prior to the administration of the summative test for the unit. There will not be re-‐takes on summative tests or exams in any math class. •
Final grades will be replaced with the designation “credit/no credit" on report cards and transcripts on credit-bearing courses. Because
GPA is calculated from semester grades, it has no effect on students.
•
For each full-year course, credit will be awarded when the student has earned BOTH a passing GPA for the course (on the scale
above) and two passing grades in the second semester. Full-year course GPA calculation: Q1 (20%) + Q2 (20%) + Exam1 (10%)
+ Q3 (20%) + Q4 (20%) + Exam2 (10%)

2 Classroom Management Plan I believe that classroom management is an essential component in any educational setting. I believe that if students are in a safe environment, then learning will take place. No classroom is free from problems. By anticipating behaviors, setting a certain atmosphere and creating an engaging curriculum, a classroom can be an effective place to meet the needs of students. My Commitment to you! : I am committed to making this classroom a safe and challenging environment where I can get to know my students and through patience and communication meet their needs. I will do my best to listen to you, be fair, supportive and teach to the best of my ability. (1)

Every Student has the Rights to: Every student has the Responsibilities to: A safe learning environment Make choices Your own thoughts and ideas Be treated fairly Learn (1) Maintain our safe learning environment (2) Face the consequences of your choices (3) Respect others thoughts and ideas (4) For your own actions (5) Not interfere in anyone else’s learning I believe that the most important priority is to have a classroom where learning can take place. On the first day of the school year, my classes will create a classroom code of conduct as you see below. They will have the choices in creating the code with my guidance and as our class proceeds into the school year, students will have the choice to follow their code of conduct or face the consequences of choosing to break their code. Classroom Code of Conduct Choosing to break this code: Consequences Come on time and prepared to learn Change seats Respect all property (School, personal, and others’) Detention Respect all rules and ideas (no criticizing others) Removal to hall/Call home Do your best Office Referral ** Other appropriate actions may be used based on the severity and repetition of your choice of action.** Once established, it is my responsibility to use our code of conduct to create an environment with positive and numerous student-‐teacher relationships. In such a diverse classroom I do not want anyone to feel that they are being treated unfairly, therefore no one will be labeled by academic ability or by the way they act or look. All students will be held responsible for following the code and all students will be held to the same consequences for breaking the rules through all of our classroom activities and procedures. I will implement class meetings throughout the year to discuss what is working and what is not working and as a class we will work together to create a classroom where every student can be successful. Parent communication will be used for positive and negative notifications. I seek to keep an open, encouraging communication with parents at all times as a way of supporting the success of these students. Thank you! Course information is available through progressbook and my teacher site on the BHS webpage for absent students to make-‐up work. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU MISSED AND COMPLETE THE WORK!!! ATTENDANCE/Make-up policy:
(1) check the assignment board in class and My staff page on the BHS website for the video tutorial
(2) ask your study buddy what you missed
(3) work must be made up before the upcoming assessment (quiz/test) or you won’t receive credit
If an assignment was due the day you were absent it is your responsibility to turn it into me the day you return to class. You
have as many days as you were absent to make up missed work (i.e. miss 3 days, you have 3 days to make up that work). If
you miss a quiz or test, talk to me before class or at the end of class to schedule time to make it up. It is YOUR responsibility to
turn in/make up missing assignments.
3 Being absent from class or classes, or any assignment without permission is an unexcused absence. Regardless of the intent,
the student will receive a “zero” for daily work. Major tests and quizzes can be scheduled for make-up before or after school. A
10% reduction in the score will be assessed to the final grade of the test or quiz. Projects will be due the following day and a
10% reduction in credit will be assessed to the final score of the project. Failure to turn in projects will result in a “zero” for the
assignment.
AIR ASSESSMENTS
All students will be required to earn a passing score on the New Ohio Learning Standards (ONLS) AIR Assessment as part of
your graduation requirement. The skills you learn in this course lay the foundations for Geometry and you will use algebra to
solve most Geometric problems. Be sure to stay focused this year to gain a strong foundation for your common core
assessments next year.
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT (straight from the student handbook):
Academic misconduct shall be defined as cheating, plagiarism, and any other false representation of academic work as one’s
own. Involvement in such activity will result in the student receiving “zero” credit for the assignment. Furthermore, the student
will receive behavioral consequences ranging from Saturday Detention to Out of School Suspension as determined by school
administration. (This includes students who let others cheat as well).
MOBILE DEVICES (including cell phones, ipods, ipads) may not be used as calculators. You must have your own
calculators!!! Devices other than your school issued Chromebook must be kept in your bookbag/purse at all times. If
caught with a device out during class, it will be confiscated temporarily and you can have it back at the end of the class
period or written an office referral for misuse of technology during instruction time. Chrome books may be open only
when permitted.
Please keep the room neat. NO FOOD OR DRINKS ARE PERMITTED!!
It is your responsibility to bring supplies to class. If you do not have a pencil, ask a classmate. Chances are, I will not have
extras to lend you.
The phone and computer are off limits to students!!
Chromebook help:
You will be receiving your personal Chromebook in October. Here is a link that walks you through all of
the functions of your chromebook: https://www.thinglink.com/scene/548296191075418113
Extra Help:
Study sessions will be provided after school from 2:15-‐2:45ish the day before each test. Students can receive help before or after school anytime with 1 day notice. Most homework has one or more of the following purposes:
•
•
•
•
Practice reinforces the learning of material already presented in class and helps you master specific skills.
Preparation provides supporting information—history, skills, definitions—for what’s forthcoming; it will help when new
material is covered in class.
Extension or elaboration involves the transfer of previously learned skills to new situations.
Integration asks you to apply skills and concepts to produce a single product. 4 Thank you for taking the time to read our Geometry Syllabus for this school year.
Please sign and have your parent/guardian sign below and return to Mrs. Rodriguez by Friday,
August 21st.
By signing you are acknowledging that you read and understand the following responsibilities &
expectations:
• Mrs. R. will do her best to listen, be patient, teach to the best of her ability and always try to improve. • I am expected to come to class prepared with my own calculator, pencils, dry erase marker, paper & a binder for only math materials. • I am expected to be respectful to others and their property. • I am responsible for finding out what I missed and making up the work when I’m absent. • I have the right to learn in a safe distraction-‐free environment. It is also my responsibility not to take that right from someone else, so I will do my best not to distract myself or others from learning Geometry. • By choosing to break the rules, I am excepting any consequence for that action. • If I need help I can: o Ask a friend o Ask Mrs. Rodriguez before, during, or after class o Set up help time with Mrs. Rodriguez before or after school o Google the topic and find a khan academy or you tube video tutorial or a math-‐based website to help o Go to the learning lab • I may retake 2 quizzes per quarter, if all of my homework and classwork is completed. Retakes have to be scheduled outside of class so that I don’t miss any lessons and I must complete the retake before the test for that unit.
