The Power of Goals
Dr. Dave Kohl
By Dr. David M. Kohl
Goals are one of the basic components of
a business plan. This is a transitional time
of the year, often spent reflecting on the
past and planning for the coming year and
beyond. Establishing goals is a multi-faceted
task involving the business, family and one’s
personal life.
In the future, goal-setting will not be an
option, but a requirement for producers. At a
recent meeting, this comment was followed
logically by discussion surrounding business
environment and many interrelated factors
common to all farm businesses, regardless
of size. For example, factors such as market
volatility, price, costs and weather each
impact business finances and operations. In
one producer’s case, his business is a large,
multi-enterprise operation with numerous
family members including brothers, sisters
and cousins. There are two owners; one is a
family member and one is not. Additionally,
the non-family member owner also serves as
the farm manager. The annual goal setting
process for this group is focused and pointed
making sure everyone is on the same page and
headed in the same direction.
Establishing goals is also a critical tool in
communicating with spouses, family, lenders,
suppliers, landlords and even the community in
general. Whether it is dealing with a financial
planner or detailing transition management
with partners, goals establish the parameters
of the discussion. Specifically, goals allow you
to map out a plan to get where you want to be.
In today’s world of instantaneous communication and information overload, emotions
often supersede logic in decision making. In
marketing, for example, the tendency towards
the sensational makes a good marketing and
risk management plan absolutely essential.
The plan provides objectivity and logic to
seemingly illogical or even urgent situations.
Maintaining balance between business,
family and personal priorities is critical, but
can be tricky. This is yet another area where
goals can help dictate a positive outcome.
Long-term sustainability relies upon a strong
equilibrium which means everyone involved
must know and agree on the priorities. For
instance, if a business is investigating a new
enterprise expansion, a transition or maybe
even an exit, a simple set of goals forces one to
slow down first and think through possibilities
on paper, before any commitments are made.
Again, this interjects logic, includes all the
players and helps to avoid major missteps.
Tips for the Process
Whether personal or with all business
partners, goals should be written before they
are verbalized. Occasionally, there may be a
dominant personality, especially in family
businesses, who attempts to control the
goal-making process, or perhaps, even the
actual goals. This creates a counterproductive,
emotional environment where vital information is likely to be omitted. A scenario
like this one is detrimental for the business,
relations, as well as motivation.
Remember to list out both short (one
to two years) and longer-term (three to five
years) goals. In addition to business, family
and personal goals, consider adding mental
and physical goals as well.
Does the process work?
The answer is resoundingly yes! I know an
upper Midwest producer who decided to
improve his health by losing weight. He laid
out incremental goals of diet and exercise and
lost 170 pounds. So far, he has maintained this
goal for five years!
Another business established weekly
team meetings as well as an annual strategic
planning day. The outcome has been improved
communications and development of a written
business plan to better guide their decisionmaking. The business is enjoying smoother
operations as well as more consistent profits.
One producer set a goal to improve
his business marketing and consequently,
decided to turn those responsibilities over
to his daughter and son, both members of
the Millennial generation. Together, they
established goals within a marketing and risk
management plan. As a result, they increased
net farm income by 20 percent! Even with
the increase, the producer felt they may have
left money on the table, but appreciated that
the logic kept them all out of emotional and
stressful decisions.
Are you ready for the challenge? Over
the holidays and into the first of the year,
take the leap and write down your goals. You
may just be surprised what emerges as most
important. This is a great way to jumpstart
your year, energize your business and maybe
even see a dream come true! ❚

South Georgia Pecan Co.
Going for Gold
Golden pecans ready for packaging and consumption
Article and Photos by Rhonda Shannon
It could be said that the Worn family has something in common with
the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Georgia. The Atlanta committee for
the Olympic Games selected pecan wood donated by Georgia farmers
to make the handles of the torches. These pecan wood-made torches
were carried in the 15,000 mile relay from Athens, Greece, all across the
United States before finally coming to rest in Atlanta for the lighting
of the Olympic flame. As the torch that was carried was supported
by pecan wood, the Worn family has carried the torch of promoting
and providing pecan products from the South Georgia area since 1971.
South Georgia Pecan was started as a small shelling plant in 1913
by the Pearlman family. In the late 1960’s, the company was purchased
by Beatrice Foods and Jim Worn began his career with the company
some time later. In 1983, Worn and a business partner purchased the
company, and Worn has been expanding it conservatively ever since.
With a commitment to quality and service, South Georgia Pecan has
been formed into an industry leader, becoming one of the top two
largest pecan shelling plants in the United States.
Housed since 2006 in a former Levi Strauss manufacturing building
in Lowndes County, this 350,000 square foot area stores, sorts, roasts
and packages pecans that are shipped to retailers such as Publix, WinnDixie, Panera Bread, Wal-Mart and others. They also notably provide
practically all the pecans for DeMet’s brand candies. Conveniently
located near Interstate 75 and near the heart of Georgia’s pecan region,
the company has the logistical capability to meet the demands of the
industry’s largest customers.
Pecans are a healthy food, increasing in popularity in the last decade,
and contain the most antioxidants of any nut. Pecans are a good source
The South Georgia Pecan gift shop
Jeff Worn inside the gift shop, surrounded by numerous pecan products
of potassium, thiamine, zinc, copper, magnesium, phosphorous, niacin,
folic acid, iron and vitamin B6, and are also a good source of fiber. They
are rich in oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated fat believed to help prevent
heart disease. On an annual basis, Georgia’s pecan harvests average
around 88 million pounds – enough to make about 176 million pecan
pies – and equates to approximately one-third of all pecans produced
in the United States. Pecans are the only tree nut that is truly native to
the United States. The nuts often offer good prices for Georgia pecan
producers and rank at number 10 in the 2014 Farm Gate Report for
commodity value among the state’s crops.
Although the Worns produce much of the pecans for their business,
they also purchase an equal amount of pecans that are produced
across the state. They utilize contracts with growers, which they
see as an equal benefit to the company and to the growers, that gives
the company a more stable, consistent supply. “It’s important to us to
keep customer sustainability because we want to form relationships
and partners,” said Jeff Worn, Jim’s son and Vice President of Sales.
“It’s also important to keep yourself open and able to fluctuate,” adds
Jeff. That philosophy must be paying off since the company was able
to ship 30 million pounds of shelled nuts in 2015, a huge opportunity
and undertaking since they had not increased capacity over previous
years to attain such an accomplishment.
Jeff joined the family-owned company shortly after graduation
from Valdosta State University in 2008. Through his role, Jeff oversees
the sales, marketing and development of their product. Until recently,
the retail aspect of their business was very limited. “Although the retail
shop had been open for a long time, it was not a focus of the business,”
admitted Jeff. That has begun to change, and the company has lived
up to Jeff’s statement to “allow yourself to be open and think outside
the box.” The proof of that statement is that the retail portion now
offers GMO-free and gluten-free products and the company develops
creations of their own. Their newest product is pecan butter, which
AGGEORGIA.8.WINTER 2017
Stored pecans in the shell waiting for processing
Cases of packaged pecan products
was going live on their website on the day of our visit. It is the first
pecan butter on the market, and contains no preservatives and is all
natural. “We’d rather see the product as value added and take the
commodity aspect out of it,” said Jeff.
The main operation for the company is the shelling plant that
cracks and shells the nuts to extract the meat. The company uses a
state-of-the-art quality control and microbiology laboratory which
checks each day using certified methods for a series of pathogenic and
spoilage microorganisms. Quality and product safety is their utmost
priority. Large, stainless steel containers can hold up to 80,000 pounds
and utilize post process pasteurization. This ensures that the finished
pecan products meet the tightest specifications in the pecan industry.
This practice is paired with electronic sorting machines, linear and
stacked sizing equipment, cutting and slicing equipment, visual
inspection tables, quality control inspection stations, and automated
packaging lines that produce bulk and retail packaged pecan products.
Even the forklifts are electric for food safety; electric motors mean no
oil or fumes to contaminate the products.
Although a good portion of the preparation process is automated,
the most important method to ensure a quality product is labor intensive.
Approximately 280 employees are on the payroll for the company,
monitoring and scrutinizing nearly every individual raw in-shell nut,
from cleaning and grading to the finished product that winds up on the
store shelves. Although nearly half of the employees’ focus is on sorting
the pecans, there are other variables to consider that contribute to the
challenging process, including moisture content, size and variety, just
to name a few. Once sorted, the pecans are stored in a 100,000 square
foot freezer to maximize shelf life and freshness until the shelling
process begins. The facility and work force are capable of grading nearly
400,000 pounds a day of the ready to shell product. “We’ve leaned on
AgGeorgia for operating capital for the total process,” said Jeff.
With upgrades and improvements to the facility and growth
of the business, South Georgia Pecan has realized many advantages.
Gaining market share, sustaining annual growth and analyzing
costs to increase owners’ equity have been goals and key factors in
the company’s success. Looking for opportunities to expand their
operation and quality product line keeps the company as a forerunner
in the industry and respected representative of South Georgia. And
just as the Olympic torch relay and lighting of the flame symbolizes
the passing of Olympic traditions from one generation to the next,
South Georgia Pecan embodies the same with their family practice
of exceeding customer expectations with innovated techniques and
high-quality products. ❚
