No.1 Oct. 2010
A Letter from President of NCYU
National Chiay University (NCYU) was merged by National Chiayi Institute of
Technology(NCIT) and National Chiayi Teachers College(NCTC). NCYU is the first
university being merged successfully in Taiwan and is one of the few comprehensive
universities in the southwestern part of Taiwan, covering a wide range of domains,
including Life Science, Agriculture, Management, Science and Engineering,
Humanities and Arts, and Education. The successful merger has been the result of the
efforts of the government, local people in Chiayi, our alumni, faculty and students.
With the excellent leadership of previous president, the university, its colleges and its
departments have become more and more prosperous as a result of an effective
merger. Moreover, the faculty and students endeavor to make NCYU as locally,
nationally and internationally recognized.
The ultimate goal of the university is to attain truth, goodness, and beauty through
excellence in research, professional training, cultural and social service. We strongly
believe in the value of sincereness, action, innovation and service. We also attempt to
instill these values in the research, education and management processes to upgrade
the university to become the pride of Chiayi and nationally renowned as well as
internationally recognized institution.
International Student Newsletter is the publication which connect to our international
students, our alumni, potential students and so on.
There are information not only
about our international students’ campus life in University, but also abroad cultures or
knowledge provided by our international students.
A Letter from Dean of Student Affairs
First of all, I would like to warmly welcome you to NCYU for your academic career. My
name is Han Chien Lin, Dean of Student Affairs and Professor of Department of Forest
Products Science and Furniture Engineering. It is a great pleasure to introduce to the
organization of Student Affairs Office in NCYU to you. The Office is divided into five
divisions and two centers, including the Life Guidance Division, the Extracurricular
Activities Division, the Sanitation and Health Service Division, the Student Affairs
Division of Minhsiung Campus, the International Student Affairs Division, as well as the
Student Counseling and Guidance Center, and the Career Development Center. The
Office serves as a primary bridge between students, faculty, and the administration of
the University. The missions of the Office are to support the mental, social, and
physical development and demand of NCYU students in a healthy, safe, and
intellectually-challenging environment.
One of the best and most important friends to you on campus will be the International
Student Affairs Division. It provides a variety of services to assist international students
with legal status, campus life, insurance, housing, recreational activities, and attending
Taiwanese cultural festivals, etc. In addition, the Office is dedicated to cooperating with
you to solve problems and assist in individual and group crisis management. All of you
are encouraged to visit the staffs in the Office to discuss personal issues or general
concerns regarding your academic and daily life.
From this academic year 2010, the Student Affairs Office is launching a service
campaign, “Where there is a badge, there are the staffs of Student Affairs Office.” The
badge (see below icon) symbolizes the goal of the campaign as bellows:
¾
Smile: keep the unbearable lightness in life
¾
Activity: create interaction and harmony
¾
Service: do our best and stand in your shoes
¾
Joy: promote full-fledged health and development
In other words, the badge signifies that all staffs of Student affairs Office are here,
ready to give you a hand. It is our sincere hope that you enjoy your academic as well as
your personal life in NCYU! (Han Chien Lin)

Chinese Calligraphy Learning
Chinese calligraphy is a traditional art from the earliest day of history and widely
practiced throughout China to this day. To help all international students better
appreciate this Chinese culture, the Office hosted the Chinese calligraphy workshop in
the evening of May 14.
All of the students were thrilled in learning the beauty and the
skills and writing the Chinese character.

Calligraphy exists in Vietnam as well, previously using
Chinese characters. But It has lost its popularity and
Vietnamese calligraphy nowadays uses Vietnamese
characters instead.
In Lunar New Year, people would go to the Calligraphist
to “ask for" a calligraphy hanging.
“We like calligraphy because it is familiar to our culture :)).
Phamoh Siriya (Graduate School of Agriculture)
Words from Thailand student
I like Chinese Calligraphy because I can practice
writing Chinese with the paintbrush. It's fun, so I
suggest we have the workshop again soon!
Bunga Primasari(Department of Food Science)
Words from Indonesia student
Chinese Calligraphy is very unique and it's such a rare
opportunity to learn about it from the master himself.
That's why I found that it's been a great chance to
learn, even just a glance, about Chinese Calligraphy.

Thang Long – Ha Noi (1010 – 2010)
The Thousand-Year-Old Historical Capital of Vietnam
By Vu Van Hai (Department of Horticulture)
Ha Noi is the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the center of culture, politics,
economy and trade center of the entire country, a thousand-year-old Capital Thang
Long – Ha Noi (1010 – 2010).
Hanoi is a sacred land of Vietnam. In the autumn of Canh Tuat lunar years (1010 AD),
King Ly Cong Uan, the founder of the Ly Dynasty, decided to transfer the capital from
Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh Province) to Dai La (Dai La or La Thanh, the name of Hanoi from
111 BC to 1010 AD). The legend has it that when King Ly came to Dai La, he saw a
Golden dragon flying, so he rebaptized it Thang Long (Soaring Dragon - 昇龍). The
year 1010 since became a historical date for Hanoi and for the whole country in
general. For about a thousand years, the capital was called Thang Long, then changed
to Dong Do, Dong Kinh, and finally to Hanoi in 1831 during the Nguyen Dynasty. The
name Hanoi literally suggests that “the land is surrounded by a river.” That is Red
River.
Many great historical events of Vietnam took place in this sacred land. Under the Ly
dynasty (1010 – 1225), A talented general, Ly Thuong Kiet, led soldiers to defeat the
Tong invaders (China). During the Tran dynasty (1225 – 1400), under the leadership of
Tran Hung Dao, the country defeated Mong Co (Mongolia) invaders three times and
ever since he was recognized as one of the ten greatest generals in the world. In the
Ky Dau lunar year (1789), in a terrific speedy attack in the five days during new year
time, King Quang Trung defeated the 290 thousand soldiers of Thanh invaders (China),
and Thang Long Capital was released. In period 1930 – 1945, under the leadership of
Vietnam communist party and President Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnamese terminated the
French colonialism. On September 2, 1945 at Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh
read the Declaration of independence that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of
Vietnam, announcing to the whole world the independence of Vietnam. Unfortunately
the French invaded Vietnam again afterwards, resulting in the continuous struggle of
Vietnamese. On July 20, 1954 , the monumental Geneva agreement was signed to
officially announce that the French acknowledged the independence of Vietnam, Laos
and Cambodia. On October 10, 1954, Hanoi Capital was finally completely free.
On October 10, 2010 the people of Capital as well as whole country are ceremonially
celebrating the great anniversary of a thousand-year Thang Long - Ha Noi (1010 –
2010).

I remember the first time I came here when I felt very lonely as I’m the only Vietnamese
student in NCYU. But gradually with the assistance of my friends and teachers, I adapt well to
this new environment. Joining the activities in ISA-NCYU, hanging out with my lab mates,
and talking heart-to-heart with my teachers are some of the things I’ve been doing to help me
blend in the life here. Therefore I want to thank them for all of their loving care. I’m feeling
very grateful for that.
