INTERNATIONAL UNION OF PAINTERS AND ALLIED TRADES LOCAL 177 – EDMONTON, ALBERTA QUICK FACTS WAGES & BENEFITS 1. What will my take home pay consist of? You will receive the base Rate for your classification plus 10% holiday pay, less normal employment deductions and union dues 2. How often do I get paid? You will be paid every week 3. How much are union dues? Twenty ($20) dollars per month + 3% of gross earnings. 4. Is there an initiation fee? Yes, the amount depends on your classifications as indicated below: 1st year apprentice - $100 2nd year apprentice- $150 3rd year apprentice - $200 Journeyman - $250 5. Are there any medical benefits? Yes, as a member a comprehensive benefit package is provided which includes life insurance and extended health care benefits such as prescription drugs, eyeglasses, dental care and more 6. Is there a deduction from my cheque for the health and welfare plan? No, your employer contributes on your behalf (please refer to rate sheet) 7. Is there a pension plan? Yes, depending on your classification and job description, your employer contributes either $3.30 or $4.40 per hour to your pension plan. The plan is a Specified Contribution Target Benefit Plan which is professionally managed for which you receive an annual statement of entitlements. 8. What is the hourly rate including the benefits? Please refer to Park Derochie Careers page “Painting Rates”. 9. Are the rates above what I will see on my cheque? You will see your Base Rate and 10% Vacation pay. The Total with Benefits include your employer’s contributions to your health & welfare, pension and job training board funds, which varies from $4.70 to $6.30 per hour, depending on your classification and job description. 10. Do I get overtime pay? Yes, all union employees receive overtime pay @ 1.5X the hourly rate for hours in excess of forty (40) hours per week. Depending on your work schedule and classification, you may also receive double time (2X) pay for work on Saturday, Sunday and Statutory Holidays. 11. Are there any shift premiums available? Yes, in addition to your hourly rate, employees who work an alternate shift schedule receive a three (3) dollar per hour premium. JOB SECURITY 12. Is my job secure if I work for a union company? The construction industry is cyclical however given the current state of the economy in Alberta, the union sector is enjoying excellent job growth and the prospects for continued growth are good. 13. If I get laid off do I still pay union dues? In order to maintain your good standing with the union you are responsible to pay the $20 per month basic dues 14. What happens if I am laid off? The local union hall will make every effort to place you with another union firm, however if they are not able to do so you can secure other work if you chose to do so. OUT OF TOWN WORK 15. Will I be required to work out of town? Possibly, a significant portion of union work is related to the oil industry which may require out of town work. 16. Does my pay rate change if I work out of town?
