Our two listed companies, Minoan and Finnlines, both fall into this latter category. Minoan Lines is performing well in a Greek market where other operators are swamped by debt and worsening losses. It is by far the Greek company with the best performance this year. After an optimisation in the employment of vessels and sustained cost-cutting efforts, the company is expected to break even in September. This has been possible despite the fact that Minoan operates in a market where absurd things sometimes happen. More than one Greek company is engaged in unfair competition with Minoan, and this is a deep concern not only for the company itself, but for all stakeholders. One specific competitor is in business despite its negative equity – by the end of March this year, its equity was down to minus €10 million. This competitor has racked up losses totalling €120 million in the last three years, and has over-valued the assets on its books by €100 million. As if this were not bad enough, the line operates a significant number of vessels aged between 30 and 40 years - definitely not a good visiting card for Greece’s tourist industry. What guarantee is there that this company will be able operate properly, while fulfilling all its obligations? How can the interests of employees, suppliers and customers (both passengers and trucking companies) be safeguarded? Are employees confident their wages will be paid? Are passengers aware there is a risk such a company might not be able to trade? That they might never be refunded for delays or cancelled trips? And how is it possible that the competent Greek authorities allow such a company, listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, to continue operating? In other countries, companies that have burnt through 50% of their equity are obliged by law to replenish it immediately. This is just common sense. We all know that the future of this type of “technically bankrupt” company lies in the hands of the Greek banks that have been financing them for years. However, because these shipowners continuously register huge losses, the risk of bankruptcy has been transferred to the banks themselves. This should be a reason of great concern for account holders and the economy in general. Elsewhere, in northern Europe, the news from Helsinki-listed Finnlines is very encouraging. Our subsidiary enters the second half of 2014 after reporting its best financial results in eight years, and one of the best sets of results in the company’s history. Between January and June the bottom line result improved by €25 million thanks again to cost cutting. In the second quarter alone Finnlines registered a bottom line result of € 14.7 million - again, the best quarter in eight years. It is no exaggeration to say that the company’s results so far this year have been truly exceptional. To judge by the positive trend of Finnlines’ share price on the Helsinki Stock Exchange – which has seen a noticeable surge in recent months – this achievement is increasingly recognised by the investment community at large. Finnlines’ management is predicting improved full-year results on a pre-tax basis for 2014. As the majority shareholder, the Grimaldi Group has full confidence in the management team. Finnlines will, as of next year, be facing new challenges in the form of low-sulphur fuel rules imposed by EU law. These rules will have a particularly heavy impact on carriers that derive a large portion of earnings from trading within the sulphur emissions control area – the Baltic, North Sea and English Channel. Finnlines is well placed to thrive in this new environment due to an extensive capital investment programme now underway. After lengthy talks with scrubber manufacturers, contracts have been struck which will by early next year result in installations on two thirds of Finnlines’ fleet, while six vessels will go through a re-blading process in order to reduce fuel consumption. As a result, these ships can continue to burn high-sulphur fuel while remaining compliant with the new rules. When combined with the expected fuel efficiencies from the propeller re-blading programme, Finnlines looks set to remain competitive amid tougher trading conditions. Elsewhere, the Group’s Euro-Med services have also seen a noticeable uptick since the beginning of this year, moving from the “good” category to the “very good”. The motorways of the sea network in the Mediterranean put in a particularly strong performance. The Group’s deepsea services, meanwhile, performed well over the same period. Management would probably have been able to match the impressive performance of 2013 were it not for a series of restrictive laws on imports to certain African countries, which have put a break on growth. Fleet Development Launching of m/v Grande Tema O n the 14th of June the m/vessel “Grande Tema”, the second unit of a series of six ro/ro-multipurpose vessels ordered by the Grimaldi Group to South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyards, was launched. With a deadweight of 31,600 tonnes and a length of 236 metres the “Grande Tema” is designed to offer the maximum flexibility in terms of intake capacity and type of cargo loaded. With a service speed of 20 knots, the newbuilding can carry 5,700 linear metres of rolling cargo (cars, vans, trucks, earth moving equipment, etc) and 1,800 TEU. Its loading capacity has been increased by 47% compared to the previous generation of vessels built by the Group at the same yards. Moreover, with her two cranes set on the weather deck, the “Grande Tema” can lift containers and general cargo weighing up to 40 tonnes each. The “Grande Tema” is due to be delivered in October 2014 and will be deployed on one of the deep sea services operated by the Group. GNE WS 3 Terminals Valencia Terminal expanded Additional 37,500 square metres of storage space granted to VTE I n line with the ongoing growth in both automotive and short sea trades, the Grimaldi Group has recently further expanded its dedicated ro-ro terminal in the port of Valencia with an additional space of 37,500 square metres, located in the new terminal “Dique del Este”. This area, situated just behind the short sea platforms area, will be dedicated to the storage of new cars. Currently Valencia Terminal Europa (VTE), a subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group, operates the new terminal “Dique del Este” with an area of about 220,000 square metres. The terminal has a capacity of 8,000 cars/vans and 800 between trailers and containers, it has a berthing line of 1,350 metres, and is specialized in handling all types of vehicles and containers. Furthermore, the terminal has three train lanes with a length of 700 metres, thanks to which it is able to handle two train operations at the same time. Simulation exercises offer a safe way for cadets to learn how to become proficient in bridge and communication control situations. The cadets were also offered the opportunity to undertake their sea time training on board vessels sailing under the flag of Malta Motorways of the Sea and other companies of the Grimaldi Group. aChievements Ford Q1 2002 once again awarded to Grimaldi F ord Motor Company granted the Q1 2002 certification, the highest award granted by the automotive firm to its suppliers, to the Grimaldi Group for the 15th year in a row. The Group was the first company to receive this important recognition of excellence and quality first time back in 1999. Today it has been awarded for the operating years 2012-2013, answering to the many high quality standards required from Ford, most of which are determined by the companies QOS (Quality Operating System). This tool includes many parameters and systems involving the entire team. Ford then divides the activities of its suppliers into quality, delivery, engineering and commercial, auditing them all to verify if their set working procedures are in accordance with the levels of its demand. “The Group is honoured and proud to have maintained once again this status for the 15th time in a row”, stated Capt. Fusco, Quality and Damage Prevention Manager of the Grimaldi Group. “It is a proof of our policy that aims at maintaining and offering excellence and top quality services to our customers”, he concluded. Today the Grimaldi Group is a supplier of transport and logistics services to Ford Motor Company in Europe, North Africa, the Near East, West Africa, North and South America. Charity operation to Benin I n the context of the project “A backpack for everyone” promoted by the Consulate of Benin in Naples with the Association “A Dream for Benin”, the Grimaldi Group offered free transport for 20 packages containing school equipment, amounting to a worth approximately of 30,000 euros, destined for young students of the Republic of Benin. The purpose of this initiative of the Consul of Benin Mr. Giuseppe Gambardella is to provide didactic material to improve the education of students from Benin which are deprived of the right to study because of the lack of equipment needed to begin and end the school year. With the coordination of Michele Autuori s.r.l, the Group’s agency in Salerno, the material was delivered on the 5th of June at SAT (Salerno Auto Terminal) at the presence of many local authorities. It was then loaded on the 8th of June on the m/vessel ”Grande Costa d’Avorio”, deployed on the Mex service linking Salerno with West African ports. The cargo was then discharged on the 26th of June in Cotonou, Benin, where the local Grimaldi Benin agency offered maximum assistance to the final delivery.
